  • This week I've mostly been building castles in Conan Exiles. Then tearing them down and building them right. Then tearing them down and hopefully building them REALLY right. It's been therapeutic!

    The story of Fort Jingles seems to be quite similar to this.
    "When I first came here, this was all swamp. Everyone said I was daft to build a castle on a swamp, but I built in all the same, just to show them. It sank into the swamp. So I built a second one. And that one sank into the swamp. So I built a third. That burned down, fell over, and then sank into the swamp. But the fourth one stayed up. And that’s what you’re going to get, Son, the strongest castle in all of England." -King of Swamp Castle, Monty Python and the Holy Grail.

      @Ausfinbar 6 років тому +2

      Sadly, there is no mechanics for Thralls going rogue and coming back for revenge. Besides, Jingles won't turn into a snake, he's read the list, he knows that never helps.
      As for the Base, Jingles, it's pretty good, but the base itself is open to The Scourge because if they cant get in, they spawn inside your base. Where you had the fortified cave, at the downhill section of it, across the river is a pass that is an excellent place to build, plus, there is a camp nearby to raid for Thralls. The Pirate Ship nearby (Black Galleon) also produced Named thralls. However, what is to stop someone simply climbing up your tower? You need to put layers of Crenelations, otherwise someone naked with climbing boots and gloves can climb up.

    Conan Exiles isn't a perfect game, but I LOVE the building mechanics. I just wanted to say a solution I found to the over hanging blocks on plateaus is to build hidden foundations down into the cliff at various points, then attach ceiling pieces to those, then put your foundations on those ceilings. The ceiling pieces because are key because you can then attach inverted roof pieces underneath them to create a supported overhang that looks natural.

    For what it's worth... the inside spaces you're calling courtyards can indeed be called that, although a courtyard is technically a space inside the walls and fronting the keep, where the master lived. A more precise term is ward. An inner ward is a space inside the castle that archers can shoot down into once invaders make it that far. Outer wards are spaces between the inner and outer walls of a castle left for the same purpose. Wooden platforms for archers attached to the outside of a castle wall or tower are called hoardings. The overhanging structure you built at the corner of the second pinnacle was a bartizan. The first two pinnacles you built up as obstacles to reaching the third are barbicans. Some people call the main inside space of a castle the inner bailey, but that's actually part of a motte and bailey castle, which is a different type than you're making.

    I played Conan years ago when it came out on PvP and got to max level (think it was 40 at the time) and we did building back then. As a clan. It really was a huge time sink just to get the resources, let alone build anything from them. The it would be the objective of another clan and HUGE fights would take place. Then more time to repair the thing. I don't remember having NPC to help at the time though.The amount of time and effort you've put into this and delivered a fantastic result on your own is most impressive Jingles. Thanks for sharing it with us.

    A solid rule for fortifications like this: simply have no straight line between doors in an interior space. Always have walls placed such that you have to go back and forth, turning every second's walk into five. Add in a second floor with retractable ropes or ladders and murder holes, you can move across the space quickly while dumping whatever you want on the guys who are forced to walk back and forth through the lower floor.

    Jingles, make sure you leave plenty of room in your base for all of the various crafting stations as well as storage, maybe consider leaving a large space for a vault. I'd also leave plenty of room for multiple shrines since you can lear more than one religion in the game, you can actually learn all of them.

  • @svenknepper8639
    @svenknepper8639 6 років тому

    Hi Jingles, you might want to check your build against a few simple rules of medieval and early modern fortifications:
    1) All access points have to be defended (seems like you have that one covered).
    2) Create easily defensible choke points and narrow courtyards.
    3) Outlying defences have to be the weakest and have to be destructible from within the main fortification line (i.e. wooden structures). The goal being not to destroy the enemy at the first chance but to delay his advance and make him lose resources as he progresses (attrition).
    4) Start low and go higher - every fortified point should be towered over by the fortification which is next in line so that a successful attacker will be exposed to fire from the next works.
    5) Open up fortifications to the rear - whenever the enemy has conquered one fortified point, he should be denied protection from the next fortification works.
    6) Avoid long straight "curtain walls" - they allow an attacking group to stay dispersed and less vulnerable to archers or guns.
    7) Every inch of the wall base should be covered. In order to do so, let platforms slightly protrude from the wall (towers or bastions). Especially nasty were the so-called "Orillons", which were a slightly protruding part of bastion flank covering a gun (or in this case archer) emplacement behind it. They were practically covered from enemy fire but could easily fire at the base of the curtain wall and decimate an enemy once he had come this far.
    8) If a wall is too high, archers are going to be less efficient. In early modern times, they used so-calles "Fausses braies" to remedy to that, i.e. lower and slightly advanced platforms - a bit like balconies - which would enable archers or guns to be closer to an attacking enemy. As a consequence, your castle would look less like a Lego brick and more like a spiky stairway to heaven (or hell).

    yo, jingles there is a piece of building equipped - i dont know the propper name right now - but it basically lets you place a segment of spikes on walls and such - it prevents ppl from climbing the walls, you should consider adding a "band" all around open-top wall segments of ur bases, if u havnt already~
    also jingles. considering redoing the catwalks and stairs going up the various places, with lesser materials, so that if you or other ppl attack them, they will break before the walls etc do and ppl will fall down that way~

    Fun fact: That dance at 12:20 is an old traditional Norwegian folk dance called 'Hallingdans'.

    if you talk about castle which were impenetrable: we got the castle "hochosterwitz" (Austria, Carinthia) which was taken once by the turks but then the build out of it the fortress which is practicle impenetrable. Here a short summarize of it:
    The castle is build on a step hill but the way up was undefended and they build they way with 14 Gates between them and you can shoot at attackers at gate 1 from gate 6. To show you that i try to ilustrate the principal idea:
    CASTLE
    gate 13, gate 14
    gate 12, gate 11, gate 10
    gate 7, gate 8, gate 9
    gate 6, gate 5, gate 4
    gate 1, gate 2, gate 3
    You start the attack of couse by gate 1, and the other side of the hill is ~85° steep
    So yeah even with gunpowder nobody attacked that hochosterwitz
    BTW only the türks capture gate 1 once the other gates were never captured

    This must be Conan O'Brien. The Conan I remember from the novels and movies wasn't interested in building towers. He was more interested in slaying his enemies before him and hearing the lamentation of their women. And I haven't seen one enemy slain or one lamentation from a woman.
