Absolutely gorgeous model, that locomotive is one of my favorite US prototypes of all time, and MTH did a very good job rendering it. The coach livery is questionable, however, I always assumed they were either black, or the same umber red as the cab. I could be wrong, though, they still looking excellent.
Beautiful set, I also love engines from the 1800s, I bet Lionel heard you request for more 1800s models as in 2019 they released the Jupiter and UP 119, those engines are absolutely gorgeous.
I have to admit, after watching this video I fell in love with this engine. So much so that I actually purchased one shortly after finishing watching. It is a stunning piece worth every cent.
Eureka and Palisade #4 and Virginia and Truckee's Inyo would make good candidates for models too, very pretty engines! Another good 'un, really enjoying this series.
Eric I like that the stop was in Rochester, cause that's my home town. Now have you got your vision line Lionel 4-8-4 Niagara yet. I saw it on the net and you were the first person I thought about. That locomotive is sweet, if I had the money even I'd buy one and I'm not even a collector.
I know that Lionel made the Lincoln Funeral engine....but thats likely the only other 1800's era steam locomotive in the "scale" department. Everything else has toy-like proportions or simply doesn't exist.
Unless you modify what available, or built it yourself. Hell, rivarossi made some 19th century locomotive back in the days, both in o scale and ho scale.
@@Ericstrains hahah touche. I hope my comment came more across as concern than criticism - I'm on the East Coast as well and noticed what time it was. Great video as always!
I agree. Id love to see more locomotives like this one! And thats an amazing layout. I really gotta make one. Gotta table with three tracks but thats about it. 17 locomotives and no where to run em. Lol
As who loves and runs 19th century equipment, the market is CERTAINLY lacking. Mostly locomotives and passenger cars. Freight cars are a different story. I prefer 19th Century locomotives over 20th century ones
It's pretty shocking and shameful. I'm getting back into the hobby and building an HO collection, and I can't believe the lack of selection of 19th century 4-4-0 and 2-6-0 locomotives. The European brands do slightly better, but I want some American Civil War era and earlier locomotives, dammit! Maybe we should start writing some of these companies? How else will they know about the demand?
Beautiful set. Makes me want one. Such true pride and craftsmanship went into building these things. (The prototype) Functional art. And the model has captured that completely. Gorgeous!
This is quite a neat engine! So cool that I wouldn't care if I didn't have a full layout to run it on! I'm kinda disappointed it didn't have a swigning bell, since it had two cords!
I totally agree there should be models of those trains from the late 1800's like the Jupiter and especially the General. How about CP #173 or the Disneyland locomotives?
In my opinion, the 999 looks wierd because the headlight is too small, sits directly on top of the smokebox instead of out front of it, and the drivers have been downsized
I liked this train set, so I found it on the web at Mario's trains and got it. How do you sound the quill able whistle using DCS? By the way this is beautilful train set. Thanks for sharing.
It's a very interesting thing to wonder. I could see it being the first American steamer to reach 100 miles an hour, but first steamer in the world? Who knows! Still very interesting. There's so many steamers around the world that aren't here anymore, and still here, it could be any of them.
I wonder what it must have been like to be engineer of the 999 going 100 miles an hour. I have very little experience operating a steam locomotive, but I can tell you from my experience that engineer's arm had to be sore.
I love the train set absolutely love it the only thing I would change is the whistle it doesn't sound like a whistle from that time nor does it sound like an American whistle .the American 4-4-0 whistle was a moaning whistle not a high pitch single tone whistle
When I saw this locomotive IRL, I thought.... It looked almost nothing like it did in the picture, eventually leading to me thinking it was a fake. Nope, it was just converted for the yard duties.
They have more in common than they don't. Both PRR, both steam, both non articulated, both use 2 sets of 4 drive wheels, both were rigid frames, they were built within a few years from each other, both pulled the PRR's flagship trains, and both suffered from wheelslip problems. . .of course they're not identical, but they sound pretty similar to me. If I were looking for a PRR T1 review and could only find an S1 review, I would be happy with it, and vice versa. Yes, they had slightly different wheel arrangements and the S1 had no poppet valves, but I doubt a model of the S1 and T1 would have many differences.
Well, since it was in my family I happen to have the facts and as they stand right now, the Engine did climb to over 110mph based on time traveled and distance which was verified by several officials at the time. I'm sure some are jealous, some are wanting "their" engine to be the 1st but in fact the 999 did break that barrier. It had several runs, not just the one timed run and although there were several under the 100 barrier, the one in question was indeed well over 100, as I said 110+. It's like saying "What do you mean they landed on the moon?". Hard to believe, right?
eric please do longer train runs lol i havnt seen your trains run for more then a minute now not to asume but idk if your busy and thats why you chose but i think 1 minute is getting a bit boring in my opinion
Mike Wolf has advanced this hobby tremendously. He challenged and pushed Lionel in fierce completion.
It’s all good. 🚂

Your're right. There are not enough sets from this period. So far this is my favorite of your Bonanza vids.
Beautiful set, I also love engines from the 1800s, I bet Lionel heard you request for more 1800s models as in 2019 they released the Jupiter and UP 119, those engines are absolutely gorgeous.
Yep
When I first saw 999 in Chicago, I thought it was just another nyc steam locomotive, what a fool I was.
You dare to oppose my history mortal
I have to admit, after watching this video I fell in love with this engine. So much so that I actually purchased one shortly after finishing watching. It is a stunning piece worth every cent.
You have a awesome layout to show your trains.....big, realistic details & diverse....
This would make a great civil war era or golden spike train! Awesome video, nice train!
You gave us some beautifully dramatic shots. Excellent video!
I thought day 5 wasn't going to happen lol I'm glad I was wrong! AWESOME engine and video Eric! Thanks bud!

6:00 they actually have done some of those engines in the older catalogs. I’d get one if I have the money.
I love this locomotive wish they would redo it
That Looks Amazing, love the Color.
What a 🤩 handsome high-stepping steamer! 🇺🇸 Makes me tempted to get into O gauge! 😂
In fact, I saw the 999 at the museum in Chicago as well and boy that was just amazing!
Beautiful locomotive. And it's nice to know I'm a short drive's distance from the Muesum of Science and Industry in Chicago.
Nice video Eric!
Edit: Her whistle makes her sound so lonely...

You can do that?
@@giglepiezon0323 yes, you can. Bachmann has done to make their on30 equipment.
Love those epic little LED green lanterns on the front.
I legit thought you weren't going to make it in time
Same. Wonder how late tomorrow’s will be. (No offense)

That's a mighty fine train!
I’m a big fan of your layout
So glad you made a review on this set! I hope to pick one up sometime.
This train is older than the Titanic! It's a good thing they're not "radioing" the tower!
Beautiful set Eric! Thanks for the review!
Awesome video Eric surprising today I got to go to the science and industry museum and the #999 was there.
I saw #999 there back in 2012.

Glad to see another fan of the locomotive that was a major influence to the Galaxy Express 999!

That’s a nice train Eric, if you have time could you make a New Years run with your csx
Cute little engine that’s beautiful!
Loving all the Mth stuff! Woohoo
Beautiful set Eric!!!
I want someone to make a highly detailed O scale Jupiter
I had an N scale Jupiter from Bachmann, from the Prairie Flyer train set, but it was chewed up by an Australian Shepherd. So yeah.
Lionel has you covered
That would be good
Mth makes one
I got to see #999 in Chicago back in 2012.
This is quite a neat engine! So cool that I wouldn't care if I didn't have a full layout to run it on! I'm kinda disappointed it didn't have a swigning bell, since it had two cords!
I wish i could find this model in N scale! it's honestly my favorite version of the 4-4-0.
Omg bugs will love this mth set
Someone needs to use part from a broken one of these like the wheels and such and make another 4-4-0
This engine is beautiful
when is the review for the southern 2716 coming out
I totally agree there should be models of those trains from the late 1800's like the Jupiter and especially the General. How about CP #173 or the Disneyland locomotives?
Thanks Eric !
The whistle on the 999 is different! The original whistle of the model sounded like western pacific 94's whistle in the disney film Pollyanna in 1960
That train is in the Museum of Science and Industry pretty sweet. It is all black now.
Published on my friend's birthday.
Awesome videos! Ever thought about using a small drone for shots?
i Always saw this engine in the museum there, not knowing it's origin, because it's black, and on the video it's silver. but thanks for the fact Eric.
ooo, an oldie, but a goodie
odd question, are the ponie wheels spoked?
In my opinion, the 999 looks wierd because the headlight is too small, sits directly on top of the smokebox instead of out front of it, and the drivers have been downsized
Don't forget to add Pennsy 1223 to that wish list!!

Awesome train
The Flying Scotsman was the first steam locomotive to go 100 miles an hour, or at least officially reach it.
What about the City of Truro? they said it went I think 102 or so mph though I don't think that record is official.
That's interesting. I'd be kinda scared to be in a steamer going 100 miles an hour! Easy way to get scalded to death in a wreck! Lol
It's a very interesting thing to wonder. I could see it being the first American steamer to reach 100 miles an hour, but first steamer in the world? Who knows! Still very interesting. There's so many steamers around the world that aren't here anymore, and still here, it could be any of them.

@@walterstrains5390 yea I wouldn't want to imagine what Mallard's crew felt when she did 126 mph.
the nyc 999 bell is the PM 1225 steam locomotive bell
It's similar that we have a streamlined Empire State Express.
Hey Eric check the mth 2019 catalog they announced 119 and jupiter
I have an original photo of NYC 999 that my great grandfather took when he worked for NYC
Are her wheels that she has on in Chicago different than the original?
I love the train set absolutely love it the only thing I would change is the whistle it doesn't sound like a whistle from that time nor does it sound like an American whistle .the American 4-4-0 whistle was a moaning whistle not a high pitch single tone whistle

Awesome
You should do a race between the 999 and the hudson
Welcome to the Wild West.
It looks kind of odd with the little 4-4-0 pulling the big passenger cars but, I guess that's how it looked.
Imaging this thing switching!!
12:15 - 12:22 was the best part
Eric please make a video on HO sclae two rail models...
It would be great to get the 999 in steam to see what it's whistle actually sounds like.
I just noticed this, but why dose the real thing have smaller wheels?
I love the train at 12:14 & at 14:38
Eric, I'd like to chat with you about the 999 since I have a family connection and would like to get some information. Thank you.
I want one of these trains but they are so expensive. The only legacy engine I can afford was a used Reading T1 for $300.
does Lionel or MTH or any other model train company have an o-gauge PRR T1? And if so, please do a review on one.
MTH has made one a number of times. Lionel did back in 2001 with TMCC. And a semi scale one with legacy.
Eric did do a review of the MTH PRR S1.

The 999 set costs $999 because it's 999 lol
wow only if i had the money
This locomotive has large driving wheels.
Correction, it HAD large driving wheels. The real engineinstead of having its (correct me if im wrong) 88 inch drive wheels to smaller ones.
I thought MTH did a Jupiter and UP 119 before
I know they've done the Jupiter in the RailKing line, but not the Premier Line.
Locomotive, numbered 999,
Price of train $999
Coincidence i think not
I thought this was was the dryphus Hudson Empire State express
Dreyfus Hudson’s were only on the 20th century limited. ESE Hudson’s were designed by someone else.
Jomama05 I know I just saw the name and thought it was the Hudson
To quote Chris Eden green sorry 999 but that's how much your bogus claim is worth £9.99
As everyone knows Scotsman was the first to reach 100MPH
Buchanan led the way!!
999s claim is worth 9.99 cents

for like before with other trains not this one for others to get a chance to run longer
It's nice, though real artifacts say that it was supposed to have a 3 Chime Whistle. Like if u agree
