Fr Reginald Wolford gives the first of five talks at his retreat where he reflects on who was involved when St Dominic was given the Rosary, how Dominic used it, the role of Mary in salvation, and the power of the Holy Spirit in guiding the Church.
Father begins with a prayer of the "Ave Maria" and outlines the structure of the five conferences centered around the theme of Dominic receiving the rosary. He notes that Saint Dominic often used the rosary beads while preaching, pausing for reflection on the mysteries of faith.
Father explains the historical development of the "Hail Mary," where the first two lines are directly from Scripture: “Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with you” (Luke 1:28 - bible.usccb.or..., and “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb” (Luke 1:42 - bible.usccb.or.... The later addition, “Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death”, emphasizes the Church’s belief in the intercession of Mary and the saints (CCC 2679 - www.scborromeo.....
Father reflects on God's act of creation, referencing Genesis 1:27 - bible.usccb.or..., explaining that man was made in God’s image and likeness, with intelligence and will to know and love God. God’s intention, however, was not only for humans to know Him like philosophers such as Aristotle might, but to enter into the intimate life of the Trinity. This is reflected in Jesus’ words, “I no longer call you servants, but friends” (John 15:15 - bible.usccb.or....
He moves on to describe the problem of sin, and how the Incarnation was God's response to the fall of man, echoing “The Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us” (John 1:14 - bible.usccb.or.... Father recalls Saint Athanasius’ teaching on how the Son of God became man to save humanity from destruction (CCC 456 - www.scborromeo...., taking on human nature without sin, as stated in Philippians 2:6-11 - bible.usccb.or....
Father emphasizes the Trinitarian nature of God and highlights the role of the Holy Spirit, the Paraclete, who remains with the Church to guide her in truth and prayer (CCC 687 - www.scborromeo..... The Holy Spirit's protection ensures the Church teaches without error (John 16:13 - bible.usccb.or....
He then moves to discussing Our Lady, Mary, as the First Disciple, whose “yes” to God at the Annunciation marked the beginning of salvation through Christ. Father reminds us that on the cross, Jesus gave Mary to us as our mother (John 19:26-27 - bible.usccb.or..., teaching us to pray and ponder God’s mysteries.
Father also mentions the Archangel Gabriel, who, despite his high nature as a pure spirit, acknowledged Mary’s holiness, saying, “Hail, full of grace” (Luke 1:28 - bible.usccb.or.... The homily closes with an acknowledgment of the significance of Mary’s role in bringing Christ into the world and the power of the rosary in deepening our relationship with God.
