The bass in this song is so groovy!
I finally got to work on another song by ZUTOMAYO (ずっと真夜中でいいのに。), and what a funky song it is!
This time I arranged 『Hunch Gray』 (『勘ぐれい』), which was released a couple of weeks ago. It seems it's going to be used as the main theme song for 『Project:;COLD』, a mystery SNS "game" where apparently the story and events progress in real-time (don't know to what extent though).
There are also hidden hints for the game throughout the music video, so it might be fun to go watch it again to figure out what's going on! (ex: the QR code at the beginning)
The main task while arranging this song was about maintaining the groove of the bass. This was quite difficult in comparison to other ZUTOMAYO songs, since the sections where only the drum and bass are played make it difficult to cover up the loss in rhythm through chords or melody when played on the piano.
The way I got around this was mimicking the percussion session using low notes and short accented "power-chords" while playing the bassline. This made it less boring to listen to than just playing the bassline alone.
I thought about writing a new piano solo for the bass solo part, but I decided to keep it there so I could try arranging a "left hand solo" that I haven't really tried yet. Instead, I placed a short new melody at the very end while following the original piano melody in the song.
At the final chorus, I placed a different chord progression to make the arrangement more dramatic.
As you will notice in the video, I used parts of the original music video in the background, although I normally prefere using static shots to keep the viewer focused to the notes rather than the video.
However for this occasion I thought the video would enhance parts of my arrangement, so I cut out parts of it and synced them properly to give the original feeling of the song.
Overall, I think the funkiness of the song was expressed better than the last arrangement, but I'll let you guys judge how it was ;)
