People are still going to travel there regardless. They’ll just tent it. Wasn’t just about the bus it was about the story.
@Northern Wealth Anarchy Perimeter Exactly.
@Steve S, EXACTLY!

Very Good. Alaskan did the right thing so they're totally based. Hippies and leftist BTFO. XD XD XD
I doubt that very much. It was about these folks getting to spend time in the very spot where McCandless died a very slow and painful death. Morbid curiosity though they'll never publicly admit it. The ultimate "slow your car to a crawl and survey the wreck and death scene" if you will, including lying down in the same spot where their hero died. There isn't much else to the story except a young man got way in over his head and could not escape his predicament, alive.
You mean the story of a moronic lib that was unprepared and died because of it?
Should go into a museum of some kind...
For what? The story is stupid.
@@Rockoblocko mueseum of bad ideas....?
Haha. It'll have to be in DC then.
The museum of unprepared ignorant idiots? Hey that's a good idea for a museum.

I feel bad for the people who go wandering for days looking for it not knowing it had been removed
Yeah you gotta wonder how much damage that’ll do lol
It's a dangerous mission to get out there in the first place so buyer beware. Not sure I feel the same sympathy you do.
The bus has been adopted by University of Alaska so that it can be visited safely. They ask for donations via their website.
Now everybody is going to go to where the bus Use to be
Yeap, guess nothing would change , people visit this place not only for bus
Yeap. Now their next move is moving the trail somewhere else 😁😁😁😁 by choppa
😂
Exacto
Now they can make money off of it and charge admission
Disposal? That's a cash cow for whatever town nearby that wants to preserve it.
I would buy it.
If your family member died in a car, would you want people exhibiting and making cash if it?
The kids family should decide what happens to it.
I think it should be preserved for visitors in a safe, nearby space. Allow people to still come see it, interact with it... and charge a nominal fee, at best. Like it or not, that bus is a bit of a shrine or sacred space to many of those who tried to visit it. It would be best to continue to treat it as such, eventually bringing the bus back to a safer local area, still accessible to those for whom it has come to mean so much symbolically.
Cash cow? Whatever revenue is made from this is easily offset by all the constant rescue calls the town then has to respond to. Use your head a little here...
Troy Bernal It will bring in tourism as it is a part of the local history now. Better in a safer area so no one hikes to it. Proceeds could go to charity or to a scholarship but to junk it seems like erasing the whole incident. It belongs in a museum respectfully.
This was on my bucket list now ill never be able to see this. They shouldve left it alone
💯 😔
Agreed. How people decide to spend and risk there lives is nobodies business.
Me too hun ...I'm super bummed
Yes
Yeah I agree but alot of assholes think they have the right to control or tell other people what to do in there own lives 😡🤬
This is a mistake. Never move the magic bus.
The news especially now, saddens me immensely. I somewhat feel that Chris must be happy knowing this, he wouldn't have wanted for any casualties. However, I wish the bus remained...

Yeah but when the 'adventurers' get lost and injured , who do you think they call smartass?

That bus was a rusted hulk which wasnt even usable as a shelter anymore. In the last 24 years that area has been turned into a garbage dump by endless streams of narcissistic entitled visitors who wanted to have a "special moment," then acted like pigs.
The Alaska authorities had to rescue dozens of people over the years who hiked up there in naive idealism only to get trapped themselves. They were sick and tired of the parade of newbs.
You wanna pay for the rescue? It has nothing to do with McCandless, it's the fault of the stupid and ill prepared people who trek up there and have to be rescued.
No. It is causing drama that is not needed in a remote wilderness. #nodrama
Also; It was originally one of a few buses used by the Yutan Construction Company to provide remote accommodations for the construction crew from Fairbanks that worked on road upgrades in 1960-1961. The bus engine was removed and it was instead towed by Caterpillar D8 bulldozers. It contained beds and a wood-burning stove, which still remains today. When the Stampede Mine ceased operations in the 1970s, all but this one bus were removed from the trail. Bus 142 had a broken rear axle, which caused the crew to leave it. It then served as a backcountry shelter for hunters, trappers, and visitors until it was removed entirely in June of 2020.
The bus gained notoriety in January 1993 when Outside magazine published an article written by Jon Krakauer titled "Death of an Innocent" describing the death of Christopher McCandless, an American hitchhiker who lived in the bus during the summer of 1992 while attempting to survive off the Alaskan wilderness only to die of starvation four months later. Its high time it was made into scrap metal and MELTED DOWN
Are you remotely aware of all the extra deaths that have occurred trying to reach this bus because ignorant explorers like McCandless decided to not prepare themselves for the conditions at all?
How dare they. That’s a historical sight for the trails and they can’t just move it from the end of trail. Why it just down right criminal.
Well "they" (the ones that authorized removal) are the same ones that have to rescue idiots trying to get to it.

I feel like stuff like this is part of the reason Chris even wanted to find his own adventure.
I can only imagine taking a pilgrimage only to see the bus get dragged away by a chopper
The bus had to go. People are the reason.
Here are the gps coordinates of where it was: (63.8683284, -149.7690619). I think people will still make the pilgrimage to the site even though the bus is gone. Seems like a shortsighted solution to a more complex issue - kinda like building a wall...
True. The trail should have been made safer and more hiker friendly with a safe way to cross the teklanika river.
@@TheDUDERX a bridge would help since there were 2 drownings.
Could have made the trail safer. Put cabins along the way and made sure there was service access along the entire path. I find it kinda Bs they had to grind the roof off to move it.
This is in a wilderness/national park. I don’t think they should put shelters and make it have cell service just for people trying to get to the bus. Keep the wilderness wild. Maybe all those people shouldn’t be crossing big rivers and hiking into the wilderness without proper knowledge.

In June 2020 because of these incidents the State of Alaska arranged for the Alaska National Guard to extract the bus (known as 'Bus 142') from the trail. As part of a training mission, an Alaska Army National Guard CH-47 Chinook helicopter airlifted the bus out of the wilderness and a flatbed truck then transported it to an undisclosed location. @ 28 years now!
Oshit I thought the bus was racist or what ever
I thought it had a virus and all the occupants were Asian Hornets, or something.
😂
The bus was actually seen hunting local wildlife and cutting down old trees. They still aren't sure how it survived so long out there with no fuel. It will be moved to an open field where it can continue to live out its life in solitude.
It's an ANTIFA bus.
That’s a funny joke my dude
The bus was a symbol for young lost men. And government takes it away. Only emphasizes the point of Chris's story even more. ...
But we must love and forgive.
It was a symbol for romanticist idiots who dont understand the first thing about the wilderness or survival.
And they cut the roof to move it.. lame
I would say that a very good idea would be to create a park with a small memorial museum, near the head of the Stampede Trail. Name it the Christopher J. McCandless Memorial Park. Put the bus in the museum/visitors center.
Restore the bus' condition just enough to make it safe for visitors to walk into... and definitely still allow visitors direct access to it. With the family's permission, restore the little suitcase to its place on the bus. If not, create a replica, with a log book for visitors to sign into, and to leave a few words.
Leave everything else that had been on the bus, like the little stove, bed, etc, as it was. Replace the pieces of the bus that had to be cut out for the removal. Leave all of the memorial graffiti on or in the bus as it is. Tell the story, from the original placement of the old bus, to McCandless, to the book and the movie, to pilgrimages to it both successful and unsuccessful, to its removal, to the creation of the memorial site. Have some remembrance of any who died in the attempt to get out there.
Though it would be best not to charge anything, if you must, make the fee into the museum nominal, always affordable. I would say that the final move would be to place a small memorial marker where the bus once sat... but then, you'd probably just end up with the same problem you were trying to eliminate. Probably best just to let Mother Nature reclaim the clearing.
Like it or not, that bus has become a shrine of sorts, a sacred space for some. By handling the fate of the bus in this manner, it can continue to be a place of contemplation... in a safer space. It can also help out the economy of the local town just a bit, with visitors.
Memorial for what, a moron? Chris was a fool.
All people would be visiting is a coffin without the body, thats creepy. The bus should have been left.
@@mark703 the problem with leaving the bus where it was is the very reason they pulled it out of there. You'd go right back to people endangering themselves to get out to the bus. As for it being a bodyless coffin, that didn't stop hundreds... maybe thousands... from going out there to that bus. Some people even camped there overnight, sleeping in that same rickety little bed that Chris died on. There are videos on UA-cam to prove that. I think an idea like the one I've mentioned is a good compromise.
Instead of answering everyone that thinks they should move it to a nearby town for a tourist attraction, just go to Healy, which is near the trailhead and there is a perfect replica already there as well as some REALLY good for at the 49th State Brewery.
Been there got the pictures and a t-shirt. Always fun to see who recognizes the bus on the shirt when I wear it out on the town.
That is the bus used in the movie.
Terrible that they removed the bus and stuck it in a museum, there missing the point. All the people will see in the museum is a coffin.
Removing the bus from its original location diminishes its meaning as a shrine somewhat.
Some people will just go there and put something else up.
@@HeilRay I doubt that. The bus was the attraction. If the bus is set up somewhere more accessible, it will not have the same attraction as the old location. It was a shrine to Chris McCandless at the location where his life ended

Good. We don't need more stupid people up here.
@@HeilRay The place where the bus was is the place Chris ended up in, so it's not so much about the bus as it is about the place.

How did it get there in the first place?
Such a sad story x
That bus is getting to experience something no other vehicle gets to experience
gave up his ghost 28 years ago today. RIP.
Never thought to put it in a film museum I gather
I’m confused on why he starved to death. Did he not think about bringing a fishing pole?
This won't stop with the removal of the bus. It was never about the bus itself.
I don’t understand. It’s in a trail. Implies people go hiking on the trail. If it’s so dangerous why not destroy the trail? They should put it at the beginning of the trail then. It’s a very impactful story. It means a lot to people you relate. I vote for keeping the bus. But I’m not his family so his family should have the last day.
I ain't got no home in this world anymore
Some people need The Real Chris McCandless Experience. Never thought his story was one that should be repeated though.
@47thnight 91 thing is he didn't live he died do to his own hubris and arrogance.
Why? Just because he died? We all die. Chris lived his wonderful life doing what he loved. No one should live in fear of dying. That's no way to live. If others were inspired to live the way he did, let them be inspired. Let them learn from and repeat his experience if that's what they want to do with themselves. Maybe it just shouldn't be repeated by YOU?

Lighting Guy I find his story to be unremarkable at the least and dangerously inspiring at the most. The people being airlifted out of there are enough of an example. Anyone who actually takes time to learn how to hunt and survive in the wilderness is much more inspiring than this person. To see such an over-privileged person give up what so many are very fortunate to have, as though running water, food markets and technology are symbols of white privilege as opposed to basic necessities that have helped all society progress, is just arrogant at its worst and naive at its best. This is wrong... 😕 the bus should have been left. It was a reminder of an adventurous young man's journey and his final resting place..
Instead of moving the bus, they should have made concrete shelters at regular intervals. Government just making things easy for themselves to not to have to go on the rescue calls. They should have left it there, those who died trying to get to it where probably happy to do so

You'd think that with a book telling the story of a hiker dying in a bus that was too far to reach on foot, would be enough to convince people to not do that.
