Geordi was one of the first times I saw a black man on TV that wasn’t a stereotype. He wasn’t into hip hop or basketball, he wasn’t a gangster, he wasn’t a Gary Stu cool guy because the writer wanted to show how not racist he was. He was just an ordinary, awkward guy that happened to save the day with his brains instead of his muscles or a gun. That came at the price of him also being a bit of an awkward nerd, but he still tried. His failures made him more endearing as a character, not less.

Geordie was awkward af with women. He was written as an awkward but extremely intelligent engineer nerd, who went about trying to get women in a way that A LOT of men go about it in real life (and fail miserably as well). He tried romantic settings, tried to activate his emotional side, trying to charm women that were out of his league, wasn't self aware enough to know he was being cringy, had no game... He also had an obvious physical disability. A modern man of our own era in Geordie's position would have the same amount of luck as Geordie did. He just isn't smooth! Yes the writers could have written him differently. BUT to be fair - Worf, played by a black man, was a strong confident warrior who was afraid of nothing. He landed Troi AND courted and the won the magnificent Jadzia Dax (in ST DS9). Geordie just drew the writers short straw.

That’s true, but it’s also true that Geordi plots involving him creeping on women got really repetitive fast. If you wanna go the route of him being a cringy nerd, then I think you either have to give him that moment of self-realization and let him grow as a character or else have Troi or Picard sit him down and get him to knock it off. It’s just weird that in what’s supposed to be a new age utopia, you have what amounts to harassment going on and it’s just never addressed.
I mean this is Berkman we’re talking about so I shouldn’t act so surprised, but still!

Riker's father and transporter brother Dr. Crusher's aunt and ghost lover. Picard's brother, nephew, and sister-in-law. Worf's parents and son. Dead Tasha Yar's sister.

They just wrote him as an awkward smart nerdy guy. Those types of hyper intelligent guys often times have difficulty with women.
If anything, Levar Burton portraying Geordie was the opposite of racism. Back then black people would have never been cast in the role of a smart nerdy engineer.
The real reason he never “found love” was because he was a smaller side character. There’s only so much time in every episode. So the writers had to have the main characters fall in love first. Then, if you have time, you write the side characters falling in love….which they evidently didn’t have time to do with Geordie.

But they do oversell it a bit making his attempts for connection seem creepy and even pathetic at points, But I think it definitely exaggerates the episode they play in this clip, him being able to find a lid to his pot therefore means more. One could surely argue that this was something that happened quite a bit for black male characters on 80’s shows. The absence of a female love interest on many t.v. Shows was rampant during this time. Benson is one example that comes to mind and there are more. Juxtapose this with white male characters who were commonly casted with having a female love interest and one can see that African Americans actors on television were not written with female love interests. At least they made it up by developing Worf’s character to have a female love interest.

To combat that, he focused on the scientific journey instead of his lack of stability. He's a very gifted engineer because of it, but he lacks in the social department as a price.

Trying to play the race card in that interview is a bit sketchy. It was more the character being awkward and sadly never being written out of that phase. Worf had relationships. Troy, Dax, the mother of Alexander. Worf was played by a black man so idk if saying “Geordie didn’t get laid because he was black and the white writers were racist” is truthful/accurate.

Geordi and Riker weren't, in my opinion, cast very well. And this was my opinion from back when the series started, and continues til today. Remember: It's my opinion only.

I actually think that this whole premise is flawed, he ends up marrying Leah Brahms - and it's not that he goes after her when she's not receptive - it's that he falls in love with a Holodeck version of her who is of course totally receptive because she's artificial. Then he meets the real her, she's not happy that he has preconceptions about her based on his Holodeck experiences and feels violated by the Holodeck recreating her without her permission. But because Jordy is such an awesome guy and because his intentions are pure she warms up to him and realizes she misjudged him at first, and they fall in love and get married. I don't think he's a creep at all
He has an awkward date in another episode and people have combined this all into some narrative that just isn't accurate.
If it wasn't for that one date on the beach in the Holodeck I don't think anyone would have created this stereotype of Geordie.

The black dude on a white tv show in the 80s and early 90s hardly ever claps cheeks lol since interracial dating is usually a no no on these shows. They made it work with Worf since he was an alien. Usually they'll get a black female guest star to act as a temporary love interest which I think they actually did on this show.

It's kind of weird given the society the Federation has. There should be plenty of women amazed at his career and accomplishments. Possibly even experts seeing him as a contemporary that would want to meet him. He's also an attractive man. Maybe if they'd let him grow that beard, he'd have had more luck.

    Jordi is "Brilliant Engineer Nerd".
