Native to Africa and Middle East, and imported first into the country decades ago as part of a food security programme, the tilapia, a rather productive species of fish, came to be known as jilapia in native tongues, eventually acquiring the moniker 'jilebi' meenu or fish. And the tiny village of Buyyanadoddi in Mandya district, 90 kilometres outside Bengaluru, is making ripples with food lovers for its "jilebi" fish fry.
The fish is caught fresh from streams in the area, marinated and then tawa fried over a wood fire, slathered continuously with a spicy green chilli paste and liberal sprinklings of crushed pepper, in a clutch of home eateries here. And over the years, its appeal seems to be catching on not just with locals but also Bangaloreans looking for a tasty outing and to experience Buyyanadoddi's rustic appeal.
Hope you enjoy this episode; take care, stay safe and strong. Happy eating!
