Quiet stands including removing leaves built up on platform and no mud on your vibram boot soles that falls off after drying and falls off when you shift your feet,Don't ask how i found that out! These all all great tips Jeff, Learned to shoot sitting down at OCSC indoor animal league in 80s,the lessons we learned all came at a price, ie ruined chances. Your tips are spot on for success when the opportunity comes.Thanks...
Great tips Tex ☺️ Always love your insight and experience added into your comments...much respect! Wow now that's going back a ways...in the old archery clubhouse? Seems so long ago!
Thanks Robert...awesome to hear from someone of your experience, too! Time to sit, relax and take a nap 😁 Heck...I've been doing that since my 20s, ha. Love my treestand nap time...
100% right brother I've been hunting about 35 years my dad taught me a long time ago squirrel hunt to sit back close your eyes and let your ears due the work it's helped me a lot deer hunting love the videos keep up the good work I also shoot them sitting down😊
This is my first year hunting - shot rifle in Tennessee, got my first deer. Bow hunting season in PA (where I live) starts 12/26, so it will be my first time hunting on my property (10 acres). Your videos are helping me out A LOT. I'm going to focus on food source for my property for next year, but for now I just want to get out in the small amount of woods I have. Thank you very much for sharing your experience and knowledge.
I missed my chance at a mature buck this season because the climber I was in creaked as I was pivoting (while standing) to get into position for a shot. Even though my movement was obscured he stopped and locked on to the sound and as hard as I tried to stay frozen longer than him he won the staring contest in the end. I was one of those guys that had the climber on the back side of the tree thinking that it would make for an easier shot with the bow. I'm pretty much a novice with climbers and that experience isn't helping me build confidence in them. I see more disadvantages to hunting with a climber than advantages (so far). Thanks for the follow up video and the knowledge share! Much appreciated, as always.
When I was younger I can remember sitting there with my bow in hand by the grip with my release clicked on the string. I wanted the very least movement possible when a deer was approaching. I can remember some very cold hands in those early November days. I hunt with a crossbow now and use a hanger. Probably best to lay a crossbow across your lap, complete opposite of a compound.great video Jeff thanks. Oh and thank god for harnesses to keep you in the tree during those naps. 😉
Great tip. I've found that absolute minimization of noise and movement is very critical on very calm days and less so on windy days. I use a recurve bow and shot 10 very nice Pa. mountain deer while standing. Never move when a deer is headed in your direction even when their head is down. I always wait till they are past me to shoot and only move as slow as a snail when I do. Thanks again for the great video.

This ones helps a lot Jeff! I can see here where good warm quite clothes helps you here! Standing feels so good now and then and it seems to keep me warmer in the stand on cold days but I’m going to make the transition this year. Amazing with technology these days that you can watch Packer games from the stand. Guess you have less temptation to watch football being a Lions fan!😂 Sorry I couldn’t resist and have a great weekend!
Ha, too funny Mark ☺️ I am a stubborn Lion fan tho, lol... Thanks tho and I hope that this helps you make the transition! I actually stay much warmer staying seated...almost like being in a fetal position. Less overall body exposure. Have a great weekend!
Another great video as always it does me as much good knowing I’m right there where the deer can see me but it never does and walks on off. Knowing I hid myself good enough to not get spotted
Just purchased a Lone Wolf stand that has a built in bow hanger on the platform. Wrapped felt around the area to help quiet in case I bump my bow. Hoping it works out well. I'm guilty of resting my bow on my lap. Better than hanging in on the tree but still has too much movement as you noted
This built in bowhangers are Awesome Jom!! One thing is I haven't seen a good, comfortable lone wolf seat...have they changed them? So critical to have a really comfortable seat so you can sit motionless for hours and not have to shift around.
I bow hunt sitting down. Standing is to tiring. I don't bring all my toys. Because I'm always digging around looking for something if I do. All I have is my Phone. I have learned to only move my hands within my body outline with camo gloves on. If I have to reach for something it is in super slow motion with my eyes scanning for any deer movement. Great Video.

Oh man those were terribly dangerous too 😲 The FT stands don't have a swivel, but they have a big, wide, quite seat that you can turn to the right or left and easily shoot from, quietly. Amen to that too. I've always looked at bowhunting in a stand as time to relax 😁 I have actually never stood for bowhunting now since 1985, with the exception of the very early years of standing on a branch to hunt. Which was crazy!

Jeff is 100% correct here. Although when it comes to suburban deer there are two sides to that coin. Yes, they are absolutely used to the human presence, our scent and loud noises. Meaning even mature bucks will return within 24 hours of being spooked because they have an extremely limited range. However, they interact with so many humans that they are way more in tune to the shape of the human body, to the point where we even have to keep our faces hidden in the early season because camo paint isn't good enough.
I also applied, left voicemails and emails several months ago and I haven’t heard back from WHS. A quick reply saying “sorry, all booked for the year, try again next year” would go a long way to maintaining all that goodwill WHS has built up over the years.
We get so many contacts it is tough to keep up. Our only drive to site visits are within 2 hours from home...or in certain portions of OH, MI, WI, MN, IN and IL...very specific locations tho. Diane works 50-70 hours per week, 7 days a week trying to keep up. We also get so many contacts with no location and no phone numbers...those contacts get contacted last. Diane is trying to keep up tho and we are trying to put together some help for her. It would seem like a quick response...but when we get 40-50 contacts per day and spots open, I know that she tends to work on the contacts with full info and centered around our currently planned trips...even then she can't keep up so we are working on a solution. We also get dozens of contacts looking for free information on how to design their land. She tried to let those folks know we can't help them...or have time to help them, even if we wanted to. I work 70-80 hours per week, often 13-14 hours per day with driving, so something I can't take care of. Ever. I screenshot your comments to Diane and sent them to her... With the exception of a handful of OH, MI and WI client openings thru Feb of 2021...we have no openings for other states other than thru my monthly fly-in trips. My next open fly in trip for other states is I think in April? But Diane keeps the schedule ..I just go where she tells me ☺️ My 3 day fly-ins are booking at $7450 + airfare. We already have 125 client days booked from mid December thru mid Sept...so spots are limited to very specific locations and contacts without locations, size of parcel, etc tend not to get contacted quickly. Again, it would seem like an easy email to send out...but it is not, when you have dozens of email chains going for booking specific spots, all day long.
Wish I could sit down all the time Jeff. I've broken just about everything and have kidneys that just naturally produce stone's. I know my movement is a big reason I don't have a wall full of mounts like you. I was just born to be in the woods and have been since I could walk and have had many opportunity's that were so close but just wasn't able to get it done. I lost a big buck as a 14yr old kid due to a shot I knew I shouldn't take and yet I took it. I found it 2 days later completely eaten by coyotes. From that day I made a decision to never shoot over 30 yard's and never take a marginal shot. 30yrs has passed since that day and I have killed alot of deer but still have never put one on the wall with a bow. Listening to your video's made me realize I do quite a few thing's wrong and with all the nice buck I have on camera's I will changing the way I do thing's quite a bit. Thank you for putting out something that will stick with me for the rest of my life.
This helped a lot, thank you for taking the time to provide us with this information and putting this video together. I have a hard time shooting sitting down because of the shooting rails that’s on most climbers. I hunt public land mostly and a hang on isn’t really an option. It’s either a climber or a ground blind. What do you recommend ? Also, could you speak on ground blinds please and what’s your take on them?
Excellent video. I scared a buck off last year that was walking behind me. I turned my head quickly to see and he was 10 yards. His neck snapped up and he was gone like the wind
Standing on a branch , I forgot about that.whitetail such a challenge,we did about anything to get the advantage. Like you said it's a time to relax, now we can do that, much safer Oh yah excuse to eat a little candy., so healthy 😁
You just said it and jinxed yourself! You’ll probably spook a few of them this coming season LOL. You know.... Murphy’s Law! Question: What are your thoughts regarding a seat at the base of a tree or blowdown/rock etc? (Un-elevated) I’ve got friends who swears it’s almost easier then being in a tree but I am very leery. This video got me thinking about that because of relative position and how easy it is for deer to pick you off at a distance. (When elevated/in the tree.) - I am a saddle hunter and have been for almost 15 years. I think I was one of the first if not the first to combine rock climbing aiders with sticks back then. (Not getting any younger!) PS: Many good videos! Would love to see one on hunting while sitting at ground level. (Not using a ground blind.)
@@abanks2771 Yep, exactly why I've avoided the ground thing as well. Crazy timing one year later... I haven't had time to be online for anything but work since spring & ironically you reply 22 hrs. before I first check back in here lol..... Must be "the fall thing!"
Hi Mike! Various strategy videos. The hunting video type titles don't last...so I roll my hunts into strategy videos. Lots during the Fall of course ..
Lol i have been saying this for years but everyone says they think im wrong. I actually practice out of a chair. You need to learn to turn your hips a little. I have gotten handcuffed and had deer to my right side that I couldnt get to because I was sitting BUT ii didn't spook em. I actually have alot of hearing loss in my left ear but most of the time I hear most deer before I see them. This and the other vid u did one this may be my 2 new favorites . Many hunters overlook or were never taught this.....one thing though...how do you stop from gouging up your bottom cam which tears up serving holding your bow like that?
Hey Jeff, great video as always. I've been trying to get in contact with you about coming to my properties in southeastern MN. What is the best way to get in contact?
Hi Brian...thanks a lot for your patience! We really appreciate it. I would contact Diane directly at 906-202-9454. Even just sending a text. Thank you! You are so close...I am sure that we can fit you in somewhere if you are flexible. Really appreciate it Brian!
I read books in the stand. Quiet, no movement other than turning the page. I've had to put my book down to shoot a deer probably a dozen times. I wear bibs and keep my coat half zipped so I just slip my book in and under my bibs so it won't fall then shoot.
Now I sit most of my hunt but I do need to stand every soften because 90% of tree stand seats are to low in relation to the seat to platform distance. Im also 6'2" so thats par for the corse for me lol.
I understand about sitting down in your tree stand with a full size bow ( 28-38 ) axle to axle but how well does that work with short bows ( 18-27 ) inches axle to axle I am getting ready to use a short triangle bow this year and range shooting is good and accurisy is good. But have not used it for actual hunting yet it is about 21.5 inches axle to axle will I still be able to sit and hunt as in the way that you describe?
Hey Jeff when's your next available spot like to hire you love the videos and would like your input on my property if I'm doing it right even if it's just an hour
Hi Joe...thank you! I only work by the day and we have very few spots open thru Sept...maybe a handful? Very specific locations for trips already booked for out of a specific motel room, in OH, MI, or WI. A few more openings in OH/Jan, MI/Feb, and WI/Dec. I believe the next fly-in trip opening is around next April? Again tho I only work by the day and don't believe in online consultations. Would be awesome if we can work something out some day! Really appreciate it Joe ☺️

Hey Jeff. I’ve always wondered if a squirrel or bird making a distress call after seeing a hunter, do you think that alerts dear to be more alert? And as far as the cell phone should it be on complete silence or do you think a deer within 30 or 40 yards could hear it vibrate
I always hunt with my ears. I’m 25 and with my landscape deer hides blend right into it and trick my eyes. So if I hear something I’ll close my eyes and try to pin point it with my ears first then use my eyes
Am I the only one who gets intense aches just sitting there? If I stop moving completely, my back starts to tighten up and hurt, my elbows stiffen up, my hips start to hurt, hands get stove up. My neck gets stiff. The more I try calm my mind and focus on the woods the more these aches come to the active portion of my mind. I’m only 33. Getting the phone out actually keeps me right. I’ve had more deer walk up on me while I was on the phone than any other time. Think it has to do with being able to keep still and keep my mind off of the aches. Deer are absolute Ninjas. I’ve had entire families walk up on me that I’ve never heard. And then the sound, especially early season, you have a cacophony of noises from squirrels chattering, to birds chirping, crickets and cicadas. Turkeys strutting nearby. (Actually had a group of turkeys spook a doe towards me, pretty entertaining to watch). I hear dogs in the distance, the road nearby, a leaf falling off a tree near me actually may as well be an explosion it’s so loud. Rain drops if it’s rained at all recently. Limbs snapping off trees. You’re own breathing and heartbeat. You hear all of this how can you tune that out to hear probably the quietest animal in the woods? And does anyone else get intense pain when they stop moving for extended periods of time or should I see a doctor?
I broke my back twice in the 90’s. I cannot sit for long periods in my treestand. I stand and lean against the tree 2/3 more than sitting. I can shoot from sitting if need be. I don’t have any issues killing big bucks this way
I am very careful on my tree selection, because I'm a bigger guy (6'3, 210), and I know I'm almost too fidgety to be a serious hunter. If the sun is in the deer's face, and you're careful to hunt with enough back cover you can get away with a bit more movement.
For sure Zac! Unfortunately so very few "perfect" trees where you need them. Sitting down, hunting with your ears and zoning out helps a lot...I sleep a lot too ☺️
every deer I've shot out of a tree stand i was siting down. nice when they hold up in front of you with no shot for 15 min.s. and you have to freeze in position.
I shoot better setting I’m not wobbling so much when I set down. Every since I had my neck bones fused together my balance is not good enough to stand up. We just got to pay attention be safe out there and GOD BLESS you and your family brother Amen 🙏
Hi James...a high quality treestand is so critical! Although my back get sore at times...easy to sit motionless for hours. Almost like in and out of consciousness...
@@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751 I was going to try and get a more comfortable stand it is about 8 years old . Thanks for your videos I certainly appreciate it I have learned alot from you. I only have ten acres but it's right next to an ag field probably going to do a little hinge cutting and wanting to maybe plant some browse. Dont know what's best really red osha dogwood, barasca etc. There are so many. Maybe one of your books may help.
I know you are boss, but I disagree on the right hand shot for a right hand shooter. No way I can get a full right shot while sitting. I gotta stand and face the tree.
Oh, you definitely have to stand up...sorry. misunderstanding 😊 Or shift to the right on the seat a bit...which requires quiet clothes and a quiet seat. Or you have to stand up and shoot to your right if more extreme...which has happened to me around 3-4 times in 36 seasons.
Guys shoot to much poundage. That is why they can't shoot sitting down everybody wants to be 30inch draw when they are 27inch and shoot 70 pounds when the need to be shooting 55.
Just based on decades of shooting dozens of mature bucks and never spooking any...well, except when I've missed them 😁 This is a black and white thing for me, wouldn't even allow someone to hunt with me if they didn't follow these rules 😉 Too little time...not enough mature bucks to play around with and spook 👍
Yes I got to get a bow hanger to keep my bow in front of my face. I’m fixing to turn 51 years young brother. You don’t look that old brother I’m serious I figured you to be 44-45 years old. Yes take a old doe that’s been in a certain wood lot she knows every twig and stick everywhere in that place to
That's how it is comfortable to me. Been using same or similar trigger that way for 25 years. Been all good. That throat with grip is too close to bend my finger behind 😉 I would just close your eyes for a couple of seconds and think happy thoughts 👍
Smart phones on a hunt have no place. The point to me is to get out in nature and observe god surrounding me. Not have my head down in the google machine. I see a smart phone your not hunting with me.
Bow was on my lap ,It didnt notice me pick the bow off my lap into shooting position , it noticed me when I stood up very very slowly while drawing back . So next time I'll try what you say and try my best to keep the bow into shooting position 100% of the time and shoot sitting , I can shoot sitting just dosnt feel rite . Haha
Not a tree stand but I had a deer walk within 10 feet of me in a ground blind that I made last year , and I know what you mean by shooting when your sitting unless your already standing . Because It wasn't untill I stood up to take a shot, he noticed me, I even waited untill its head was down grabbing an apple to draw back . It still noticed me.

What a great video! Keep up the good work.
I really learned a lot from your videos. Thank you. Also at 1:30 min . What clothing is that you are wearing.
I try to approach tree stand hunts like I'm ground hunting. Sit down and become a statue. Thanks, good stuff!
Amen to that!! Have to stalk the stand. I get there, immediately climb into the stand and HUNT!
I like then mindfulness of the experience you speak of. Shinrin yoku in the tree stand:)
Excellent video. I scared a buck off last year that was walking behind me. I turned my head quickly to see and he was 10 yards. His neck snapped up and he was gone like the wind
Awesome information!
Thanks...
Thank YOU Bobby!
Standing on a branch , I forgot about that.whitetail such a challenge,we did about anything to get the advantage.
Like you said it's a time to relax, now we can do that, much safer
Oh yah excuse to eat a little candy., so healthy 😁
Ha...yes, now we can relax and be safer 😁 AND eat candy! Heck we could barely afford the candy back in the day!
(Not getting any younger!)
PS: Many good videos! Would love to see one on hunting while sitting at ground level. (Not using a ground blind.)
Deer are looking for predators at eye level, not up in a tree. I prefer a stand to a blind for this reason.
@@abanks2771 Yep, exactly why I've avoided the ground thing as well. Crazy timing one year later... I haven't had time to be online for anything but work since spring & ironically you reply 22 hrs. before I first check back in here lol..... Must be "the fall thing!"
I spooked my biggest deer so far this last season due to standing up to shoot! It was a Midwestern giant in South Carolina!! I'll get him next year
Dang...real sorry to hear that! Man you can't get away with anything with those older bucks. Definately not worth the risk!
Great info Jeff! Where can we find your video recorded hunts?
Really appreciate it Brian!
thank you for covering how to have my bow sitting in the stand iv always laid it on my lap
I read books in the stand. Quiet, no movement other than turning the page. I've had to put my book down to shoot a deer probably a dozen times. I wear bibs and keep my coat half zipped so I just slip my book in and under my bibs so it won't fall then shoot.
I have the same pse u are talking about used it got along time when I was 14-17
Hunted 4 years with bow and stood and tried to shoot everytime and would spook. Today took a shot sitting and had my first bow kill!!
If you have a hand climbing treestand how can you sit and shoot if you have a front bar on the climber? Thanks
Jeff,
I believe the climbing treestand you have in the videos has been discontinued. If you had to buy a new one what would it be?
Hey guys, curious as to what release you are using here 13:03
What do you think about saddles? John eberhart has used them for years
Hey Jeff when's your next available spot like to hire you love the videos and would like your input on my property if I'm doing it right even if it's just an hour
@@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751 tenrogger a day is even better knew your bizzy didn't know if could get you for a full day I'm in sw mi and any day you have a available like to hire you can send me a email with your info if you'd like and we can discuss it further joeacerra@yahoo.com thanks again looked forward to hearing from you keep up the great videos best info out there!

Jeff I love your videos! ? What release do you use?
How do you shoot sitting down in a climbing tree stand? Doesn’t the bar get in the way?
Hey Jeff. I’ve always wondered if a squirrel or bird making a distress call after seeing a hunter, do you think that alerts dear to be more alert? And as far as the cell phone should it be on complete silence or do you think a deer within 30 or 40 yards could hear it vibrate
Marshall LAW I’ve had deer 5 yards away when my phone vibrates and never had one look
How can you only sit when it is a weak side shot? In some scenarios you have to stand.
I have also found you hear better with your eyes closed.Great stuff as always Jeff.
So how do you feel about hunting saddles then?
How would I hold my bow when I am in a climber?
How do you feel about saddles
I broke my back twice in the 90’s.
I cannot sit for long periods in my treestand.
I stand and lean against the tree 2/3 more than sitting.
I can shoot from sitting if need be.
I don’t have any issues killing big bucks this way
Hunt with your ears if it's dry and or leaves on the trees. Wet, snow, no leaves...hunt with your eyes mostly.
I have to set my back and legs will not let me stand up long anymore.
I try to sit as much as possible but I have to stand every once in a while because it's so uncomfortable to stay sitting for hours at a time
Hi James...a high quality treestand is so critical!
You might influence me enough to become a better hunter...
Ha, I hope so Rick ☺️
I know you are boss, but I disagree on the right hand shot for a right hand shooter. No way I can get a full right shot while sitting. I gotta stand and face the tree.
Oh, you definitely have to stand up...sorry. misunderstanding 😊
Or shift to the right on the seat a bit...which requires quiet clothes and a quiet seat. Or you have to stand up and shoot to your right if more extreme...which has happened to me around 3-4 times in 36 seasons.
I don’t know if this is just me but when a deer locks eyes with me i try to just close my eyes because i feel like they’d see my eyes moving lol
sitting still is a successful method for hunting whitetail 100%
I sit in a turkey chair. Use a crossbow. Got caught drawing the bow too many times.
I always sit.
I have some homemade stands that face the tree. The only option is to sit!
Shot my first dear 2 years ago kneeling on the ground
Going to be trying sitting this season
So it's actually a Treesit Bowhunting tip.
Ha, amen to that ☺️
Hey my brother
Makes me think,
My success rate has gone waaay up since I went to crossbow.
1. I'm not getting busted drawing back
2. I'M SITTING.
Guys shoot to much poundage. That is why they can't shoot sitting down everybody wants to be 30inch draw when they are 27inch and shoot 70 pounds when the need to be shooting 55.
Not a fan of saddle hunting I assume?😂
We would respectively agree, do disagree on this one.
To each his own, but not for me.
Just based on decades of shooting dozens of mature bucks and never spooking any...well, except when I've missed them 😁
This is a black and white thing for me, wouldn't even allow someone to hunt with me if they didn't follow these rules 😉 Too little time...not enough mature bucks to play around with and spook 👍
Yes I got to get a bow hanger to keep my bow in front of my face. I’m fixing to turn 51 years young brother. You don’t look that old brother I’m serious I figured you to be 44-45 years old. Yes take a old doe that’s been in a certain wood lot she knows every twig and stick everywhere in that place to
I hate watching you pull back that bow without your finger behind the trigger.
Number one tactic to assist in hunting from a sitting position is using a crossbow.
When you said you dropped your bow and said you were high lol I thought yea meant from like smoking weed lmfao until ya said 25 feet lolc
Ha, woops! I need to start thinking before I speak 😬
@@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751 hahaha oh well , it was funny .
ZONE OUT AND LISTEN
I dont use a phone ..... ever . Unless I'm in an enclosed blind
Squirrels will tip ya off to bigger animals
