  • Mopar realized the potential popularity of producing trucks that were specially outfitted for those who wanted something "different". This model began as an idea truck, but interest was high enough that it warranted production, starting in 1976.

What a cool Warlock! Any wizard or sorcerer worth his grimoire would approve. : D Always been a fan of these and the Li'l Red Truck. A family friend actually owned a LRE some years back. There were a couple kicking around my neighborhood when I was a kid also. Equally interesting but lesser known was the Midnite Express package, which from what I understand was installed at the dealership on black pickups. They reportedly came with any optional V8 up to the 440. I saw one at a Mopar/AMC show in 2000. Not sure if she was a "real" example or a tribute (the decal set is reproed so clones can surely be made) but it was a treat to see something so unusual. Latter day muscle, and in truck form to boot!! Some sources I have seen claim the Midnite Express was '78 only, others say '78'-'79. Yet both may be correct...maybe it was only "official" for 1978, but if a dealer still had some decal kits lying around, why not install them for a customer willing to pay in '79? Stranger things have occurred. I recall reading an account from someone who swears he saw several 1971 Challenger T/A's outside at a Dodge dealership in '71, when they were not supposed to exist! Maybe he was mistaken and saw R/Ts, or maybe a local dealer ordered up some materials and put a few of his own packages together? The T/A WAS going to be offered for '71--some magazines made note of it--but in the end Chrysler dropped it and the AAR Cuda after '70. Those mysterious tales are what make the car hobby so fascinating and addictive. It's like archeology.

Thanks for sharing that Mopar history! I've never seen a Midnite Express version...and as you say, with repro parts available, it's hard to say if it's genuine. That's why it's so cool when the owner can fill in the blank spaces about the vehicle's history. I love those stories about cars that may be the real thing, and maybe not. I remember visiting my local Chrysler dealer in 1963, and I swear I saw a couple new Newports with three speed manual, shifter on the floor. I have NEVER seen one so equipped at a car show....so who knows if I can trust my memory! LOL! Thanks! :D Jack

Dodge was really doing a great job producing these sport trucks, Lil Red Express and this Warlock! They helped the cool side of trucks instead of the strictly utilitarian. Thanks! :) Jack

Hey, Ira! I'm glad you had one of these, but sorry to hear of its fate! www.allpar.com/trucks/warlock.html
does give a history, but no productions numbers. Since it was a trim option, those numbers may never be known. Thanks! :) Jack

If I had been ordering one then, I think I would have spec'd out dark green with a 440. Black a close second.

Yes, either color and that 440 would have been one cool ride...and fast! Thanks! :) Jack

Hey Jack. Lovely looking 76 Dodge Adventure. I love the condition. It's either a nicely kept original survivor, or a nicely restored truck. :)

I love that side step on the bed. I would think that would make for easier access to the bed. :)

Hey, Alberto! This was a regular production Adventurer truck with this special trim, and the truck was called the Warlock...the other special trim was the Li'l Red Express. Thanks! :) Jack
