My band teacher/director did a hearing test at the doctors recently and he's lost 10 percent of his hearing (10 percent meaning the very, very high frequencies so like dog whistle pitch) and apparently he was told it was worse in his right ear.. which is ironically where the flutes sit lol
not for the flutes, but for the piccolos, the players are supposed to wear an earplug in one ear so they don't damage their ears too much. the other players sitting close to them should probably wear one too, by the sounds of it haha
As a former piccolo player, I simultaneously took offense to this and laughed my butt off! I remember playing Shostakovich Symphony No. 10 in college and the second violins would turn around and look at me. My response, "I didn't write it! Blame Shostakovich." Also, in case you were wondering, it's high and loud to us too! LOL There's a reason many of us wear ear plugs while playing. :)

This actually happened in my orchestra! There was this boy who was really disruptive, he kept on playing wrong notes on purpose and plucked when the conductor was talking. Even when everyone told him to stop. He made stupid jokes that didn't make any sense when he was supposed to be listening. So one day, they had ENOUGH and they BANISHED him to... the back of the section!!!!!!!!

When you play piccolo in orchestra, you need to bring many pairs of earplugs: one for yourself, and one for the musician on your right!
