I'm an amateur polymer clay sculptor and was looking for a realistic forest diorama tutorial.I'm totally new to the world of diorama and luckily came across your channel! I would like to thank you for generously sharing this valuable information and knowledge of quality diorama making art!
Glad to hear you are being creative! It's the best therapy for me in this crazy world . . . 😁You are also very welcome and I hope the content inspires and prompts you to go for it. Have fun and just blow through the failures. I do it all the time. Cheers ~ Boomer.👍
I'm a "fern aholic", I have many varieties around the property. Some native, some not. They each have their uniqueness. You have captured that in your diorama. Beauty, eh... (Let's go fishin' up there...) 🤫
Ahhh the ferns, so simple yet so realistic and satisfying 😊 Well Booms, I took the jump and bought a jar of Fiber Paste and Modeling Paste. Neither have I used until now, what a game changer !!! Working on a small wooded 1/35 armor diorama right now and the trees have definitely taken a jump forward 👍👍
❤ I do love Black Bears. You leave them to carry on with whatever there doing - and hopefully 80%+ Mr BlackBear will let u carry on as well. ❤ I have really enjoyed yr videos. As I am a rather new diorama builder alot of what u did blew me away not sure if I can attempt these procedures. WOW- LOVELY JOB. PS- Maybe one day u might try videoing a beginners dio. Oh Yeah... That's me. Cheerz for now. Denise WA. X
You are an incredible modeler, artist and inspiration. Many years ago I was sitting track side in the middle of the night. I couldn’t sleep so I went to a nearby commuter line. The moon was out and a freight went through and in the caboose (remember them?) the was a light on and the silhouette of a sleeping brakeman against the window. Looked just like those Lionel passenger cars with the frosted clear plastic windows and the silhouettes of people. I always remember how cool that was and you have inspired me to start planning a shadow box of that scene.
Boomer, i wait semi-patiently each week for another episode of this build. I am now so excited about this type of project. For folks like me who are apartment denizens, this is a perfect way to model and display. Your work is incredible and inspiring!! Please assure me you wiil cover building the enclosure and the frame/matt. There has to be some type of internal lighting, but i'm at a loss how that can be done.
I do show a few clips on the box. The box is very simple. You just make sure it is a few inches larger that the diorama for it to slide into. The matte and frame was pre-bought at Opus Art Supply, so the box was measured to fit the frame size. It helps to plan the box size first. The internal lighting is a LED puck light you can buy from Home Depot.
This diorama is absolutely incredible, but for some reason the ferns pull me out of the immersion a little bit and I can not pinpoint why. They are masterfully crafted - I love the technique. Maybe they just seem a little too perfect to me. The photo of the prototype showed the diifferent fern bushes way less organized. Can't wait for the future chapters of this series!
Now I wish my layout had a shady area in which I could install some ferns. Hmmm. Maybe between the enginehouse and the boundary fence. As usual, Boomer, a video full on useful techniques and ideas. Cheers from Wisonsin!
Thanks for the info on your scale. I am working with 1:87 scale, so I can expand my skill sets for my RR. I am also adjusting my style from OR forest to upstate NY, big difference in trees and fewer ferns .. ha ha Cheers and have fun. I do enjoy your post and can see a difference in my work, makes it even more fun.
I seemed to be amazed not only by your scenes but your thought processes and your video production skills. There is just so much in this series to learn, practice and execute. Thank you Boomer to the continuing processes you show that are opening my eyes in the modeling world. It’s not just about my Trains any more
Thank you, wonderful discussion as usual. That fern technique will be great for 1:56 scale Palm trees for an Afrika Korps dio! Your discussion on color(s) reminds me of a model I took to an IPMS show. The colors looked awesome at my house under the lighting I have at my bench. When I got it to the show the lighting was horrible and my model looked completely different! I'm going to try to have the same lighting at my bench that I will have on my shelf layout to avoid this tragedy! LOL.
At the 20:25 time line, the highlights on the ferns in the bottom left corner are very real. I assume that this is an accident and is just because of the video lighting. this shows people how real your work is. It's just great!! I love watching you turn the unit and I watch the highlights on the different items in the diorama. it's fun to see what the "sun" might be doing. The one thing I find is that people have to learn that there is only one sun and if they paint items to flat, they will never really look real. Dry brushing needs to have the highlights coming from only one direction. I have a ball hung over my layout and think of that ball as the sun. Parts of the layout have very few highlights as the area is facing directly into the sun, and other parts have quite hard, crisp highlights because this part of the layout is at a greater angle to the sun. This comes from studying photographic prints made by Stigletz, Adams, Pecker, O'Keif and many other older landscape photographers as well as some of my own works.
Hi Boomer, "Improve the world by creating - not complaining." That prompted the memory of a quote by another 'famous artist" I thought you might appreciate as much as myself. "Don't think about making art, just get it done. Let everyone else decide if it's good or bad, whether they love it or hate it. While they are deciding, make even more art." - Andy Warhol -
This is a lovely and concise build. I love those ferns you made. Did you mention what type of tape you used for those Ferns? I didn't seem to catch that. Thanks!
Boomer, thank you! I have been playing with trying to make ferns for a military model and now I know how! Questions, I was always taught when adding elements to a diorama, to place the item single units or in groups of three! (Thank You Shep!) Do you employ that method as well? and When you highlight with Naples yellow, do you aim for randomness of colour so they are all different?
This particular series is unique because I "lift the veil of Oz" opposed to mainstream chronological content. You would not believe how much I leave out due to efficient editing. There is so much going on between the frames as well. In terms of composition, I try not to over think things when composition is in development and I show things I normally would not. I am not legalistic about "groups of three" because composition is always about balance and is subject to many other elements that also help balance a scene that may not be present until the final. 😁
In mine Island we don't have tamiya tape. Can I use masking tape to make the ferns? I don't have a airbrush. Can I use just regular acrylic paint and a brush to paint the ferns?
Yes, yes an yes. You can use regular masking tape and regular craft paint if you so choose. You do not need an airbrush to build any diorama if you want as well. 😁
The ferns are just fantastic! The whole Diarama is starting to look like a photograph. The skill level to make a Diarama look exactly like nature itself is really unbelievable!
So many words to describe this, I will just use a handful, Stunningly beautiful and realistic scenery.....
Imagine your whole layout looking like this. You would probably stop running trains . . . lol.
Wow this is like looking back on my younger years in the Pacific North West. Thank you
Yes indeed. It is Pacific North West inspiration for sure. 😁

Funny you mention that. I just received my HO Scale CP Caboose from Rapido and it has constant lighting! Cheers.
Grate job ! I like that you explain things that even I can understand them and get their appreciate what's really going on here.

It's a great learning curve for sure. ;-)
@@boomerdiorama A long one. I may not have enough time left to get very far down the road, but what a great road it is.
Wonderful presentation and modeling. I am learning a lot, and very inspired.

Nice little trick to make Palm trees, as im working on Pacific WW2 builds 1/72 scale, love all your vids too
It's a great method for palm trees!

You raise good points. One should never underestimate the benefits of studying famous photographers - especially black & white photos.

Surely those will move in by themselves.
Hey Boomer
Another great video. Love the ferns , going to try that in 1/87 not sure how well I can pull it off .
Cheers from Ontario

Go for it. One never knows unless they try. Nothing to lose really as well.

Yes, and Dennis Muren (Star Wars Visual Effects Artist) said, " Artists feel the work, they don't over analyze it."

Tamiya Tape.
Masterful. I am so thankful that you take the time to film and share your work. Every story you tell is meaningful.

Not sure, but I'll ask him next time I see him. ;-)
It's a funny thing how these things can evolve if you stick with them long enough. I'm close now though.
