Hi Sarah, thank you. Super helpful the way you break it down slowly and actually narrate as you're playing. Difficult scale, but you make it easier! thanks
Hi Sarah, thank you for making these videos! I'm 29, and I just started playing the cello a week ago with absolutely no musical background whatsoever. Your videos have helped me tremendously so far. I love your positivity and your passion. It really shines through in your productions. I've subscribed to you and I'm looking forward to your future videos :)
Hi Sarah. I have a helpful tip that I learned from a cellist and teacher for the type of tape to use for finger tapes. She suggested car pin-striping tape. You don't even need to use scissors if you buy the correct width. And it can be broken to the right length just by pulling it. It's also less sticky than other types of tape. Great videos by the way! You are such a brilliant teacher….so clear and easy to understand and translate. Please can you demonstrate A flat Major…thank you so much. Definitely the best on You Tube!
I was very busy over Christmas and New year's. I studied a lot for the SAT and also learned some Latin grammar in my textbook with extensive practice exercises. In that those days, I was extremely productive, like, I was on a very strict schedule.
May I ask where do you put the thumb if you move the 2. finger down to the E? Do you keep it on its position or does the thumb follow the second finger? Thank you very much 🙂
Thanks, very helpful video. I have a question, it’s pretty general though lol. When learning different scales, is it a bad practice to stare at the fingerboard as I learn the fingerings? I think I accidentally formed a bad habit of looking at my fingerboard a lot which probably hurts my posture.
thanks a lot sarah but my teacher taught me a different way where i am to play first position till i reach the E of the second octave where i shift to fourth position and finally i play the A with slightly touching the string just beyond fourth position, so what do you say about such method?
Dear Sarah I've been watching your videos for a while and the very helpful my name is Robert I'm from Southern New Jersey I'll play the violin for about 10 years as of November 2018 my 10th year I've been playing a viola for about 1 year in the violin I know like the first second and third positions in the viola the first position on just storing a cello and I just wanted some advice on just exactly what you're talking about the scales and stuff like that but I want to know about the first position where to place two fingers at and then how that all works cuz I know on a violin it's GDA and E' and with the viola and cello it's CG D-A" I do get that you know like everything with one fingers on the a string would be a b and then you have instead of having like a b c d a u have one finger on the A and then the second finger is a B-flat in the third finger is like another bee and so forth I don't understand it but I would love for you to go over that and why that's like that because in the violin is not like that each finger is a note meaning one finger on the D is it e u f g 3rd fingers on three fingers in the violin G you understand they're always like that but when I come to the cello and Viola it seems like a special to cello the cello has like two of certain notes on each string I understand the violin having that but it doesn't have it set up that way I wonder if you go in explaining that and what that means I know what a flat isn't sharp I had to get to it but why does it have like two B's and 2 of this into of that thank you and I haven't even bought my cello you I'm not getting in till probably January February 19th I'm very very busy thank you Robert h a l l e r Harbor Township New Jersey and I love your videos are fantastic and your hair looks good you look very good I remember your other ones I seen your hair did look like you're having a bad hair day but have a good holiday this holiday okay thanks a lot and you are fantastic teacher thank you
Hi! Could you possibly do a video that shows your whole body straight on? I am trying to make sure that my posture is correct but I can't figure out how far out the end pin should be and what angle the cello should be at. Any tips? Thank you so much for your awesome videos!
Earlyer i said your so talented, I would like to refraice that because I know it takes many years and long hours to perfect play the cello. And I know this because I started play the cello last year and it can be hard some times.
How does the online lesson work? I am quite interested. I started playing the cello around 3 months ago, and my cello teacher is often away due to sickdom... It would be nice to be teached by someone else and not having to figure it all out myself!
I see you play the second octave on a single string. I can recognise a major scale if I hear it. But, I can't tell you which one it is. Now, can you play a whole scale on each single string?
Just wandering, not criticizing, but I notice the finger notes u played wher slightly on the flat side. Is that acceptable playing. In other words how exact do need to play a finger note, does it even matter much. I a beginner with lots of question. By the way,I’m occasionally taken lessons with ur buddy warren.ty luv ur videos I review them often.
I think I'd have to watch this video again to understand exactly what you're saying, but there is a high probability that I was playing slightly "flat". "Flat", however, is up for interpretation. Over the years, our standard pitch has gradually raised. I play at A440 or slightly under. My ears favor that for some reason. Aw yay, tell him I say hi!
hello, sorry for bothering, but i want to ask you if you can post a video showing the ornaments (trills, grace notes, turns...) -please :) with all due respect...
+Sarah Joy, I reall want a bit of a help. I see that you play the Cello, but also sings and play the Double Bass. I want to become a Maestra. I've started to learn the Cello, and want to return to the piano when my financial situation allows it. I did study the piano for 4 years and stopped, and Violin by 2 years and a half and stopped too. I want in the future to try the Bassoon. For someone who wants to become both a maestra (conductor) and a composer, it is important to know some instruments? I know that Piano is essecial, and the cello helps a lot because it (and the Bassoon) plays in 3 Clefs. So, what do you think? It's good or not for me? I'm certain that you will become famous in the classical music, because you are a great Cellist. Hope some day we can play together. You makes me remenber my current and first teacher of Cello. She is very brillant and she dedicates a lot to become a good cellist. Sorry for my bad english. Need to return to classes.
Hello! I think learning how to read in all the different clefs is very good. I would, however, encourage you to pick an instrument (2 at most) and stick to that. Perhaps your situation is different, but for most people, more success is reached when their focus is more narrow.
Cello...tape - it was a really terrible pun. Sorry. I've not got to using tape yet - but having spent the last few years as a guitar tutor and tech in a school, tuning guitars pretty much on an hourly basis, I feel my sense of pitch is pretty developed. I've nailed C and A major position wise and enjoying the challenge with the fingering. Luckily for everyone else, I live alone, so I've got no one to complain when I'm practicing! What a fantastic instrument though. I love it.
Sarah I owe you my soul I completely forgot my scales and your glorious presence has reminded me
Hahaha I’m glad I could help. If you ever need a complete collection of all scales, the Galamian Scale System for Cello is super super helpful.
Hi Sarah, thank you. Super helpful the way you break it down slowly and actually narrate as you're playing. Difficult scale, but you make it easier! thanks

Wow, that describes my situation exactly. Good luck on your journey, man. And thanks Sarah for sharing your wisdom!
We need a recap or update on how it's going? im 46, played guitar all my life and just now got into my first cello.
I'm very motivated

Hi…thank you for the video 😊I’m really struggling with the one octave arpeggio and the stretch between A and C# 🤔
May I ask where do you put the thumb if you move the 2. finger down to the E? Do you keep it on its position or does the thumb follow the second finger? Thank you very much 🙂

A good way to start is to pull it out to about the length of your index and thum fingers combined, and then adding the length of your pinkie.
Earlyer i said your so talented, I would like to refraice that because I know it takes many years and long hours to perfect play the cello. And I know this because I started play the cello last year and it can be hard some times.
Hi Sarah, I enjoy your videos very much (: what is the arpeggio for this scale?
thanks!!

Yes you can! Good question.
Sorry you're very good Robert keep up the good work
What happened to the upper bout of your cello? It looks like it got hurt :(

Awesome- thank you and my girlfriend says she absolutely loves your bangs...!
Lol, I read the title of the video as "a major scale." That hard to describe in text 🤔

Happy I could prevent that! :)
What kind of tape do you use? Cellotape?.......
I'll get my coat....
I haven't bought tape in years, but I believe it's crafting tape.
