I really think the original intent was for Cass to choose Kathleen. Frankie utterly betrayed his trust by not telling him. She was written as very cold and possessive in the early part of this storyline. So what happened was, they thought they could talk Julie Osburn into coming back longterm, but it wasn't possible to accommodate her outside work schedule--she wanted to do other roles. They realized that much as she loved the show (longtime fan) and the other cast members, she was determined not to get stuck being Kathleen for years, when her window for doing certain types of roles was limited. So they started shifting it towards Frankie being more sympathetic, Kathleen and Cass have grown apart (even though their chemistry was in many ways stronger than ever), and then Frankie found out she was pregnant, lost the baby, and Kathleen basically tells him to leave her for Frankie (probably once again she's one who really loves him--enough to give him up). And over the next few years, they tried to make Cass and Frankie work but the chemistry wasn't strong enough, and there wasn't any interesting personality conflict there. Barrett was loyal, reliable, good actress--it just didn't work. And Schnetzer was too important to the show to write them both out. (Same reason Kathleen had to be killed off, but in such a way as that she could return someday--no body). Then they needed a shocking character death for the serial killer storyline. This time there's a body, and it's not Days of Our Lives, so that was all for Frankie. Except she had to come back as a ghost to endorse Cass marrying Lila. It's hard for me to watch, because honestly, I'll never believe he loved any of them except Kathleen. The character arc for Cass was, he couldn't stand being alone. So if he couldn't be with the one he loved, he'd love whoever he was with.
Thank you for sharing this... The was the tail end of Another World's 2nd golden era... The writing was great from mid-1998 through the end of 1991... And the Cass/Frankie/Kathleen storyline was really well done. You couldn't help but root for both Frankie and Kathleen.
I only rooted for Kathleen. Honestly, Frankie was such a jealous snit the way they wrote her, here I had trouble even feeling sorry for her. They obviously intended Kathleen to get back with Cass permanently, so they needed to justify it. Then realized Osburn wouldn't stay that long, so they went the other way with it.
The dialogue between Kathleen and Frankie is pretty amazing. Frankie knowing so much about Kathleen and throwing it back at her, and Kathleen being the badass Irish American who helped uncover the truth of what Reginald Love did to her mother, Mary McKinnon. It was one of the best ways to bring a character back from the dead that impacted every Bay City family - Jamie Frame being Frankie Frame's cousin, Sharlene Frame and Rachel Cory being former sister-in-laws, Matthew Cory dating Josie Frame, Marley Love being married and divorced to Jake McKinnon, Vicky Hudson cheating on Jamie by sleeping with Jake, Jamie now dating Marley, Stacey Winthrop now dating Michael Hudson because Donna Love slept with Jake, the history of the Loves'/Hudsons' and the McKinnons'... And we're just getting started 😎

I think so; when I upload my old DVDs UA-cam has been splitting them in half and then I have to go in and edit them back together so I’m losing track of what’s leftover. I’ll keep at it!
