You guys (everyone at TGW!) have improved tremendously with the quality, number, and usage of photos taken during the war. These really bring the suffering to life, for me at least. Thanks for doing such great work! :)
well if Germany chose Russia as an ally rather than Austria-Hungary they don't have to fight a two front war and bear all their manpower against France alone
Oren Ashkenazi nope. Italy. It changed sides half way through the war. There is a theme of that in history isn't there? Austro-hungarians had to fight in Italy and all along the eastern front. The Germans mainly fought on the western front and a few units on the eastern front.
Another great episode. I especially loved the description of the French stand at Fort Vaux. That's up there with the Alamo for best military last stands ever, but most people don't know about it. However, I gotta say I was disappointed how you threw in the death of Lord Kitchner and Britain's implementation of conscription at the last minute. Those were two huge events that had big ramifications, yet they were brought up as an afterthought. Perhaps you could cover them in greater detail next week.
It's not going to be next week but we will talk about them. The problem in June/July is that the war was really crazy so, we had to make some priorities.
The Russian armored cars mentioned in the Brusilov offensive were in fact from a Belgian volunteer unit, the ACM (Autos-Canons-Mitrailleuses) aka King Albert's Heroes. When they got caught up in the Russian revolution they made their way back home through the Ukraine, Siberia, the US and the Atlantic, to be redeployed on the Western front. There's a fascinating book about their exploits, titled 'King Albert's Heroes'.
The Austrian Army wasn't that Bad. This cannel only says that. There were many good achievements of the Austrian Army, like against the italians. Even on the Eastern Front, they made achievements. Of course you lose some (or many) times against the Russians, they had so many men! Even in WW2 Germany lost against them, and the Germans lost in the Brusilov offense territory too, many territory! This Channel want you make to think, that Austria-Hungary was the worst nation in this war!
Indy and Co, for April Fool's day next year you guys should do a serious "WHO DID WHAT IN WWI" video on Snoopy as the World War One Flying Ace and his battles against the Red Baron.
"In the first few years of the war. The General belief among the Central powers was that Russia was no longer capable of meaningful offensive action" . That was the very exact thing Hitler and his thugs were thinking during the first years of thier Operation againts Russia Lmao
Great job. Do you plan to continue with this series after the 11.11.1918? You know, russian civil war, polish-soviet war, unrests in Germany, and more interesting stuff.

Indy! Pause at 07:18! Would love to have this question answered in "Out of the Trenches". No need to say that this is a great show because it already is!!!
My great- great- uncle was machine gunner of austro-hungarian army at this time near Lutsk. I have his diary from those days. Lot of shooting, lot of running behind Styr river ...
I had wondered if the loss of Kitchener would get mentioned. Jellicoe never forgave himself for it as he had personally changed HMS Hampshire's route because of Kitchener complaining of seasickness and a really strong gale brewing up before his departure. Yet another great episode and keep up the great work!
WHAT!!! Kitchener just dies!? Like that? Woooow... For someone like me who is not very educated in ww1, but follows the show regularly this was a shock! You should have made a bigger moment out of it!

Hey Indy and team, greetings from Serbia, love the show and have followed it since the beginning. I was wondering if you could perhaps make a short video about Serbia's contribution to the war so far because i belive that serbian victories and war efforts have been kind of kept short in your videos compared to, lets say, Verdun. If you need some help with information on Serbia in WW1, don't hesitate to ask, i will do my outmost to help, and beleve me, i have a lot of information on the subject. In september will be the anniversary of the Battle of Kajmakcalan, the first serbian victory after Albanian calvary ( as it is known in Serbia because 150 000 solders and civilians died during the retreat trough albanian mountains) where serbian and french forces finaly stept on she soil of serbian fatherland. Keep up the good work, you have enormus fans in Serbia, can't wait for next episode. Quick fact: during the war Russia lost more men than any other belligerent, about 1 700 000, while Serbia, witch before the war had a population of about 4 500 000, lost about 1 200 000, that is almost 30% of the entire population and a half of the entire male population.
+Pavle Otasevic If you want to put together a short paper on Serbia in the war, we would gladly accept the help. Another Serbian fan is helping with an episode about a general, so that should be good.

WHAT ABOUT THE COMMENT IS SUPPOSED TO BE STUPID? THE COMPARISON OF THE POTENTIALS OF THE SERBIAN AND AO ARMIES IN JULY 1914 IMPLICITLY ILLUSTRATES THE UNLIKILNESS OF THE EVENTS ON THE SERBIAN FRONT IN 1914 WHICH CAN BE PARALLELED WITH THOSE OF FINS DURING THE WINTER WAR IN 1939-1940 AND CALLS FOR THE PRAISE OF THE UNDERDOG, SERBIANS IN THIS CASE.
THE GENERAL MOBILIZATION OF RUSSIANS WAS SO SLOW THAT IF THE SERBIA WAS KNOCKED OUT IMMIDEATLY AND THE AO PROCEEDED WITH THE POLICY "HALT AT BEOGRAD" THE RUSSIANS LOSE THE CASUS BELLI AND ARE TO SIT BEHIND THE NEGOTIATION TABLE, WHICH WOULD BE IN LINE WITH NICKY'S FOREIGN POLICY DESIRES.
Great episode this week. I have a couple questions. Firstly what was is the little artillery piece at 4:06? Secondly regarding the surrender of Vaux. I had book of stories about WWI many years ago as kid and it talked about the battle of Verdun and the surrender of one of the forts. When the commander of the fort surrendered he didn't have his sword any more and used a pair of wire cutters in their place. Apparently the German who accepted his surrender gave the French commander a sword. I was wondering if Raynal was the commander in the story.
A question for out of the trenches: You talked about how they selected stormtroopers in Germany during one of your special episodes. I was wondering how they selected the early shock troops in the Russian army to use in the Brusilov offensive? Big fan of the show. Keep up the great work!
+swunt10 For the Russian army of WWI that could actually be the case haha. Can't imagine being a Russian soldier that was told to fight and not given a rifle. The war was truly mad.
This episode, gives a great feel to the impact of the Brusilov Offensive. Complete chaos!! The thing is, no matter who would've been in the way of the Russians; Germans, Austrians, French, Canadians, Australian or British. They would've achieved the same results. Knowing Russians as people one does not wonder. It is absolutely frightening what they can achieve under competent leadership and with proper supplies. Therefore the reputation of the Austrian, Hungarian and other empire soldiers not be shamed here. They fought as hard, and as best as they could under the circumstances. However as we all know, the absolutely broken High-Command of the K.u.K Army added to the domino effect of whats to come.
excellent as always!!! what is the small field piece at 4:07? ive never seen it before. and indie encapsulates almost the whole war in one sentence "and perhaps now a few more will learn. but probably not."
From watching this channel, i say I feel guilty about all those jokes made about how the French can't fight. People from all nationalities and background fought with outstanding bravery in what could be considered the most traumatic and dreadful war in of all of human history.
+hemmingwayfan There was a development: On May 26 the Germans and the Bulgarians entered Greece, violating her neutrality as well, and king Constantine ordered the surrender of Fort Rupel to the CP armies...
Should there been a special episode about Lord Kitchener? It seems odd that his death is only a footnote to round out the week as there must have been huge consequences for his death at the hands of a mine.
Hey Indy! Would you consider doing spinoff series about Russian revolution and civil war that fallowed in format similar to this show? I just thought that could be a great idea. Anyway thanks for awesome show.
great episode guys, do you think you will do a bio episode about lord Kitchener? as he was a major figure in the British war effort and can be argued to be the reason for the mass numbers of volunteers at the start of the war, the 'Kitchener army' as it was known,
We like to watch your episodes while we eat dinner. It would be nice if you would give an alert ahead of time when you have a beginning like this to NOT watch during dinner!! LOL
You can hear in Indy's tone of voice that he doesn't side with the Austrians. Anyways, have you made a video of the usage of the Olympic Class ships (the sister ships of the Titanic) in WW1?
will you talk about Ernest Hemingway? he was an ambulance drivers during World War I on the Italian front. later he stayed in France after the war ended. please do a bio on Ernest Hemingway. Love this snow it is super Great!!!
The uncle of my grandfather - Zirev Vasily took part in Brusilov Offensive, he was wounded by shrapnel in the chest. He was 26 years old and he had a wife.
Hi Indy and team, As you have mentioned, Kitchener was killed when his ship was sunk by a mine. Yet I have heard and read that there are many conspiracy theories that this wasn't an action of the enemy but an action by the British to get rid of Kitchener for the good of the war effort. Is there any truth to this, as far as you are aware? Who benefited most from Kitchener's death and what was the effect it had on the war effort? Keep up the good work guys!
+The Great War well like the total manpower in the war Germany's manpower french manpower just like a video talking about manpower and tank amounts and plane amounts and like manpower each year
That has all been covered, IIRC the first year in particular and many times since. Just not as a feature vid. In this war a greater reserve of men just means more causalities for all the wrong reasons.
It’s so funny/interesting how Austria didn't evolve a bit since then. We’re still those guys who like to ignore past failures and just run into new ones and again and again (I’m not even talking about recent politics and elections, it's also in our daily lives).
Unfortunately the series did not talk much about Serbian ones. They just talked in general about the battles on Serbian front. Generals in big armies could afford to waste men, but in Serbia it was not so so generals used different tactics and were, as far as skill is considered, one of the most skilled of not the most. And the reason was simple - they already fought modern wars prior to Great War, while other countries usually did not. Except Russia, but they obviously learned nothing. Let's face it, Serbia fought off the Austrians for a long time and only fell after Germans joined and Bulgarians attacked from behind. So it does take some skill to do that.
The Great War Oh, I know you will, you guys are great. I am just saying that with the episodes so far they were not covered so the guy might get wrong impression. We were talking 'up to this point' :) Keep up the good work, you are the best Great War documentary series out there. Have you maybe considered to, after the end, make a workable compilation series and offer it to televisions? Because 10 minutes per episode for TV is a bit short while something between 30 and 45 minutes is quite workable.
You would think Kitchener and his staff would have a major 35,000 ton Cruiser with a 12" belt for mines or torpedoes ,rather that a light 10,000 cruiser with a 5" belt. Was he not one of the higher ups in Military rank?
Hey Flo/Indy, now that you've almost reached the next patreon goal: do you already have any particular places in mind that you really would like to visit?
What a week, holy shit. Russia gets shit done, Falkenhayn ignores Hotzendorf (again), and fucking Herbert Kitchener died. Man, I remember hearing about this guy way back at the start of the series.
I can't find much info on the internet so I'll ask here, was there any Austrian involvement on the western front? Did the British and French soldiers directly fight the Austrians. I can't find anything out about that
There were no Austrians on the western front. They were only on the Eastern, Italian, and Balkan fronts. Now some French and British soldiers fought the Austrians and Bulgarians in the Balkans.
Some Austrian units did join the Western front though fairly few as Austria was fighting on many fronts. Their main contribution to the western front was providing artillery to the German army mainly the M 11 mortar which the Germans used heavily in Belgium and other parts of the western and eastern fronts. Also troops from Bosnia-Herzegovina fought in Palestine, and Austria-hungary provided officers and equipment to beef up the Ottoman army.
What is you opinion of kitchener? Ive heard him be called a brutal commander who hated tanks and machine guns, always wanting his men to charge forward on foot or horseback, but i also have heard him called a great innovator of the military who helped strengthen the empire, using machine guns to great advantage (no doubtedly when slaughtering natives throughout the empire WITHOUT machine guns) So, was he a man who was willing to do anything to win, or was he a traditionalist with his own idea of honor?
Note from His Majesty. Dear Indie, when naming my Royal Navy vessels it is just HMS, not the HMS. "The His Majesty's Ship Hampshire" would upset the future Grammar Nazis. I am not amused either. Cheerypips, George V.
Good point. There is actually a choice. If you were describing an engagement, especially in the age of sail, you would say something like, "HMS Hampshire, having gained the weather gauge, bore down on her opponent and commenced fire." This is to certify that the ship in question was a Royal Navy vessel and not a privateer sailing under a letter of marque. But in the age of steam you would have a choice. At Jutland you could agreeably say both HMS Lion, or, to increase the tension, say just Lion. Not however, the Lion.

The greatest German weakness: The Austro-Hungarians.

the austro-hungarians were responsible for preventing a third front from opening for the germans (italy)

Someone wrote below: An Austro-Hungarian 37mm Infanteriegeschutz M.15, in essence, a light direct fire artillery piece.
From watching this channel, i say I feel guilty about all those jokes made about how the French can't fight. People from all nationalities and background fought with outstanding bravery in what could be considered the most traumatic and dreadful war in of all of human history.
The french have the best Military record in History.
We have't seen much on Romania etc, ca we please get an update??
+LJMpictures Later this summer
Romania joins the war later in August, right now it's getting ready.
All quiet on the Balkan front?
until autumn then it will kick off again
+hemmingwayfan There was a development: On May 26 the Germans and the Bulgarians entered Greece, violating her neutrality as well, and king Constantine ordered the surrender of Fort Rupel to the CP armies...
What an intense week of events
Should there been a special episode about Lord Kitchener? It seems odd that his death is only a footnote to round out the week as there must have been huge consequences for his death at the hands of a mine.
He will get his episode. We had to decided between Haig, Brusilov and him and only were able to make two in time.
DOG BLESS
Hey Indy! Would you consider doing spinoff series about Russian revolution and civil war that fallowed in format similar to this show? I just thought that could be a great idea. Anyway thanks for awesome show.
great episode guys, do you think you will do a bio episode about lord Kitchener? as he was a major figure in the British war effort and can be argued to be the reason for the mass numbers of volunteers at the start of the war, the 'Kitchener army' as it was known,
he will get his episode.
awesome episode
We like to watch your episodes while we eat dinner. It would be nice if you would give an alert ahead of time when you have a beginning like this to NOT watch during dinner!! LOL
Haha, that is not the kind of scenario we had in mind when producing this.
Also, Damn sounds like we need a special on Lord Kitchener.
You can hear in Indy's tone of voice that he doesn't side with the Austrians. Anyways, have you made a video of the usage of the Olympic Class ships (the sister ships of the Titanic) in WW1?
You can tell it's summertime Indie looks like a cooked lobster.
I love the show and young Michael Caine is a great host!
UA-cam colour balance is also a cruel mistress.
Nice video.
a question for out of the trenches what were the nicknames that the soldiers gave to each other like jerry kraut and what were the meanng of them
will you talk about Ernest Hemingway? he was an ambulance drivers during World War I on the Italian front. later he stayed in France after the war ended. please do a bio on Ernest Hemingway. Love this snow it is super Great!!!
We will.
Awesome!!!
Awesome vid C:
The uncle of my grandfather - Zirev Vasily took part in Brusilov Offensive, he was wounded by shrapnel in the chest. He was 26 years old and he had a wife.
What is that weapon at 4:06 ?
It looks like a small mortar
37mm Infanteriegeschütz M.15. It was like a very very small howitzer used for taking out armoured positions like machine-gun and sniper nests.
Just beat me to it!
Thanks man! Was looking at the shell's assuming that it was a 30mm. Any info if they were solid shots or had a high explosive filling?
+Bluehawk2008 thanks, I was wondering what weapon it was too.
Hi Indy and team,
As you have mentioned, Kitchener was killed when his ship was sunk by a mine.
Keep up the good work guys!
hey Cindy keep up the good work maybe you should make a video on the different types of manpower of the war a reply would be nice too thanks
indy
+oisin colledge different kind of manpower?
+The Great War well like the total manpower in the war Germany's manpower french manpower just like a video talking about manpower and tank amounts and plane amounts and like manpower each year
That has all been covered, IIRC the first year in particular and many times since.
Just not as a feature vid. In this war a greater reserve of men just means more causalities for all the wrong reasons.
MANPOWER!!!
4:36 are those armored vehicles are actually from Belgian battalion, stationed in Tarnopol?
AlexEy Brusilov emphasis on the last syllable
Got to admire the French courage at Verdun
It’s so funny/interesting how Austria didn't evolve a bit since then. We’re still those guys who like to ignore past failures and just run into new ones and again and again (I’m not even talking about recent politics and elections, it's also in our daily lives).
I actually feel bad for Conrad, he was doing so well lately.
Brussilov sounds like one of the best generals in this war up to this point
+Aleksandar Matić We will talk about Serbian generals, don't worry.
The Great War
Oh, I know you will, you guys are great. I am just saying that with the episodes so far they were not covered so the guy might get wrong impression. We were talking 'up to this point' :)
Keep up the good work, you are the best Great War documentary series out there.
Conrad could learn a thing or two from Brusilov. *Could.*
that happy birthday sounded like the war Cry of Thousand of men
Very good show, but could you make a special about Karl Dönitz someday ?
Can you do a bio special on Lord Kichener?
Hey Flo/Indy, now that you've almost reached the next patreon goal:
do you already have any particular places in mind that you really would like to visit?
See our new video for that.
I listen Indy ty
Quite an eventful week.
Have you ever made an episode about the effects of the great war on european literature?
What a week, holy shit. Russia gets shit done, Falkenhayn ignores Hotzendorf (again), and fucking Herbert Kitchener died. Man, I remember hearing about this guy way back at the start of the series.
RIP Lord Kitchener!
what was happening in the Pacific in this time? What was Japan doing?
This hook really did its job
Looked like there was nothing but Central Powers offensives, Jutland, Vaux, and Austria advancing in Italy.
You need to do a special on Lord Kitchner
We will.
When are we going to see the next season of It's History!? Is there any overlap in production with The Great War?
Sorry, there won't be any new IT'S HISTORY episodes.
The Great War Wha...! Where can I get more Guy??
Is it a coincidence that conscription began after Kitchener and his staff drowned or did that remove some resistance to implementing it?
+hindos Gottenberg It was already decided month earlier
Note from His Majesty. Dear Indie, when naming my Royal Navy vessels it is just HMS, not the HMS. "The His Majesty's Ship Hampshire" would upset the future Grammar Nazis. I am not amused either.
Cheerypips, George V.
when we skip the HMS part do you add The to the name. Ie The Hampshire?
You could say that when talking about a fleet action, where all of the british ships were HMS as a given.
