  • Today we are headed to Maryland Airport (2W5) in the Washington DC area. It is just 2nm south of the Flight Restricted Zone of the DC TFR (Temporary Flight Restriction). We start the flight with door problems, end with trouble entering the traffic pattern, and have more issues in between.

    That citabria took an unnecessary risk by not being courteous. Yes, he was established in the pattern, but for the safety of everyone he should have extended downwind and followed the faster plane on long final once in sight. Just because you have the right of way doesn’t mean sticking to it is the best action. You showed great judgement and humility by turning out of final.

    Love the engine sounds of the PC 12. Just when you think it can't wind up any tighter it winds up tighter. I had to re-watch the speed over the pond on the 360. I wouldn't have noticed it if you hadn't mentioned it. Thanks for recording the flight.

    • @GrantBaker
      @GrantBaker  9 місяців тому +2

      Yeah in the moment, I felt like I hadn’t been paying close enough attention to it and saw I was a bit below the dynamic speed bug caret after I had begun adding power, which is why I said something. In reality, as you can see in the video, I only got 1-2 knots slower than my target. There’s not much margin between DSB and the shaker/pusher in that configuration though, so it’s very important to pay attention.

    This was a very interesting video sir. Without sounding patronising you did extremely well to remain calm as there was an awful lot going on and you can get task saturated and lose spatial awareness very quickly.
    I've done the Vernon approach into Reagan (on a simulator) and aside from the Canarsie approach into Kennedy, it might be the most fun approach out there in America.

    Hey Grant, thanks for this video. I keep learning a lot from you on how you fly the PC12.
    Quick question for you - Rwy 02 at 2W5 is left pattern traffic. Curious as to why you chose a left 360 vs a right 360, which would have created more separation between you and the Skylane, who stated he was 'over the pond' when you were on short final?
    Again, please keep the videos coming of my favorite aircraft, the PC12. Cheers!

    • @GrantBaker
      @GrantBaker  7 місяців тому

      I opted for a left because I thought that would give me better visibility. I didn’t know where he was for sure, but thought he should be ahead and to my left. If I had turned right, I thought he would most likely be in my blind spot from raising the wing. I preferred to have the option to see and avoid even though I was initially turning in his direction.

    Interesting flight near the FRA. The contact on 121.5 was unusual. As a Controller, I usually requested another flight to go to your old frequency and attempt a contact and instruct to go to new frequency. If that did not work, then I would transmit on GUARD. When in doubt, make a 360 and line up again. I didn't hear any traffic alerts on TCAS? Did I miss it or were there no callouts?

    When that Citabria said he was turning final and you didn't have him in sight i felt nervous right away. Any idea how close you and he got?

    • @GrantBaker
      @GrantBaker  9 місяців тому +5

      At the closest, we were probably 1.5 miles. Tight, but doable. But I got pretty nervous when he called “over the pond” because I didn’t know what pond he was talking about and I was currently over one without him in sight. A good reminder to use distances instead of local landmarks that transient pilots might not know about. “I’m about to turn 1/2 mile final” would have been a much better call from him.

      Reminds me of the time I flew into OSH in 1974 during the convention. I reported "over the gravel pit". Tower didn't see me so I did a 360 and turned on my landing light. I was over the one on the South shore of Lake Butte des Mortes about 2 miles north of the airport; the one I should have reported over was across the street on the North side of the airport.

    Great and interesting flight! What do you take into consideration to cancel your IFR flight plan in the air or on the ground?

    • @GrantBaker
      @GrantBaker  9 місяців тому

      Usually it’s weather. Usually for me it’s because I can keep the airport in sight to do the visual but can’t keep VFR cloud separation. In this instance though, there are other special rules for operating VFR in the SFRA that I didn’t want to bother with.

    Do you need a multi ifr to fly PC12s?

    • @GrantBaker
      @GrantBaker  5 місяців тому +1

      Nope, bare minimum requirements would be private with complex, high performance and high altitude endorsements. But without an instrument rating, you’d be restricted to below 18,000’ (and vmc obviously). It’s a single engine, so no multi-engine rating required required.

  • @blutowitz

    I have almost no GA experience so correct me if I'm wrong but doesn't the lower, slower aircraft have right of way? Of course "I had the right of way" makes for a bad epitaph so you did what you had to. Maybe catch up with the other guy at the FBO.

    • @GrantBaker
      @GrantBaker  2 місяці тому

      FAR 91.113 has the right-of-way rules. For landing, it states: “When two or more aircraft are approaching an airport for the purpose of landing, the aircraft at the lower altitude has the right-of-way, but it shall not take advantage of this rule to cut in front of another which is on final approach to land or to overtake that aircraft.”

    You mentioned "guard" during this flight. Did you mean to remain vigilant? or is it a reference to some special DC area frequency?

    • @GrantBaker
      @GrantBaker  9 місяців тому +2

      There is a dedicated frequency for emergencies. It’s also used to try to find “lost” airplanes. It’s recommended to monitor the frequency, which I try to do as much as possible. On this flight, ATC missed giving me a new frequency before I was out of range of the transmitter I was on. Since I was monitoring that frequency, they were able to quickly get ahold of me.

    Producing & releasing your work to the public comes with a cost. That cost is mentorship. Everything you say everything you do is being absorbed by your viewers, many future aviators. Strive to lead by example in everything you do. I often hear you read back your IFR clearance eliminating "Flight Level". The terminology is: "expect flight level 250 within 10" not "expect 250 within 10". Take care.
