The January 1981 HBO Guide is on Internet Archive, where I found that this sign-off aired in the early hours of January 12 (my birthday), 1981. The film ending is actually from “When Time Ran Out.”
Very terrible film, but about how you managed to correct him about the sign-off being from January 12, 1981, that I'm very happy to see. I've been curious about an HBO sign-off in January 1981 for time.
Far better than the signs offs we got over in the UK. All we got was the announcer reading out a list of local radio stations that were still broadcasting and a goodbye.
@FrankChickens Are You Joking, I prefer the sign off the British way with the announcer reading out a list of radio stations and wishing viewers a goodnight, how dare you prefer the American way. Which we the British Don't like, Your Opinion Is wrong.
I'm hoping tomorrow is a full fledged sign-on/sign-offs episode. Sign-ons were especially funny as at that time of the morning (usually between 5:00-5:30 AM) they'd start out with the national anthem and go in reverse. Then they'd start out with usually a local affairs show, reruns, cartoons or shows they couldn't run any other part of the day. Some of those local shows were very archive worthy like on the weekends on KTLA during the late '80s and early '90s they'd have a soul show on at 6 AM with local acts and has-beens which were trying to make it big again by promoting whatever album they were trying to sell. I also remember an aerobics show which was on in the early '80s that was on at that time which was briefly popular.

I love the sign-off animation so much. Really gives a cozy end-of-evening vibe.

It's so odd that the main video is quite yellow but the color bars look much more normal. Overly red, if anything.
I hear the Michigan Lottery music during the "Inside the NFL" promo. I wish the Lottery hadn't abandoned that theme.
