Most likely it’s his mouthpiece that has the characteristics . Similar to a David Sanborn , any horn he plays will sound that way due to his particular mouthpiece set-up .

Saw Mal Waldron with South African Tenor saxophonist Sean Bergin in Amsterdam Bimhuis. Mal would smoke a thin cigar whist behind the piano.
