We are based in North Wales and manage around 150 colonies of bees, plus nucleus colonies.
We produce Great Taste Award winning honey and sell nucleus colonies to members of the public.
Our 6 frame overwintered nucleus colonies sell out very fast every year so early ordering is advisable.

We supply F1 Mated Buckfast and Jolanta Queens throughout the season. The UK Mated Jolanta Queens are reared using genetics used by the UK's biggest bee farmer - Murray McGregor - and are not available to general public, except through resellers like us! Check out our queens page on our website.

We are passionate about beekeeping and really enjoy helping beekeepers through our UA-cam channel.
On our channel you can find information on making splits with swarm cells, making increase with queen cells, grafting larvae, foulbrood and disease inspection, honey extraction and machinery, top tips for beginners, products reviews, instructions and guidance plus much more.
#NO NONSENSE BEEKEEPING is a UK based beekeeping channel, designed to keep beekeeping as simple and enjoyable as possible. There are no overly complicated techniques or intricate pieces of equipment.
We cover all beekeeping topics ranging from queen rearing, disease recognition/control, honey extraction, swarm management/collection, how to make splits and much more!
My personal favourite aspects of beekeeping are selecting queens for rearing, rearing queens for mating, making up nucs for overwintering and collecting swarms.
We aim to bridge the gap between commercial and hobbyist beekeepers and cater for beekeepers of all experience levels.

Lawrence, what I see as a compromise is to take some of the frames from the original box and put them in the middle of the second box creating a chimney effect. Then they can expand out as they grow.

I've had a couple of colonies on double brood overwinter, had them on some syrup and there really starting to get active.

If it is to cold to add another brood box, then it's best not to do it, either on top or the bottom. I find the queen moves up readily, down reluctantly. The only reason to add another brood box is to create more laying space for the queen. I would rather remove a honey frame and replace it with an empty drawn frame x2 and feed the hive more syrup, then just plunk on another brood box on the top. The single brood box, needs to be filled with bee's first, and until its has seven or eight, or lots of fuzzy young bee's, frames of active brood, then add another brood box on top. I would even take two frames of brood, mostly uncapped and move it up to the top brood box. This will make the nurse bee's to move up, and it tends to pull the queen up as well.

@blackmountainhoney would you recommend this way if I want to do splits having the bees make their own cells.?

My Smith hive does not need space yet but Im going to under super this year with no queen excluder to see what happens as I hope having the brood up top they will benefit from not losing the heat upwards into the space when supers are added.
To see how big the expand the brood and if they create a crop.

Thanks for that Laurence. Having got my two nucs thru the winter ok, i am still surprised how warm to the touch the clear perspex crownboards are and can see how heat could be lost to any void above.

@BlackMountainHoney have you tried having 2 nucs that Share honey supers, does it work? I've watched a few videos on it and they claim it produces a lot of honey. They had to fudge but with the 2 in 1 bs hive you reviewed it should be easier
