Austin is the capital city of the U.S. state of Texas. It is the 11th-most populous city in the United States, the fourth-most-populous city in Texas, the second-most-populous state capital city. It has been one of the fastest growing large cities in the United States since 2010. As of 2022, Austin had an estimated population of 1,028,225. The city is the cultural and economic center of the Austin-Round Rock metropolitan statistical area. Located in Central Texas within the greater Texas Hill Country, it is home to numerous lakes, rivers, and waterways, including Lady Bird Lake and Lake Travis on the Colorado River, Barton Springs, and McKinney Falls. Its many parks and lakes are popular for hiking, biking, swimming and boating.
Residents of Austin are known as Austinites. They include a diverse mix of government employees, college students, musicians, high-tech workers, digital marketers, and blue-collar workers. The city's official slogan promotes Austin as "The Live Music Capital of the World". The city also adopted "Silicon Hills" as a nickname in the 1990s due to a rapid influx of technology and development companies. In recent years, some Austinites have adopted the unofficial slogan "Keep Austin Weird", which refers to the desire to protect small, unique, and local businesses from being overrun by large corporations. Austin is the site for South by Southwest (stylized as SXSW and colloquially referred to as South By), an annual conglomeration of parallel film, interactive media, and music festivals and conferences that take place in mid-March.
Emerging from a strong economic focus on government and education, since the 1990s, Austin has become a center for technology and business. The technology roots in Austin can be traced back to the 1960s when Tracor, a major defense electronics contractor, began operation. IBM followed in 1967. Texas Instruments setup in Austin two years later, Motorola started semiconductor chip manufacturing in 1974.

I’m planning to go to Austin in January with my boyfriend to visit his home and his dog. He lives there and it’ll be my first time going so I’m excited to see the city with my own eyes.

The Colorado River which runs from Colorado to the Gulf of California through the Grand Canyon is not the same Colorado River in Austin

Nice video and narration Cathy. FYI A harmful algae bloom occurs when Cyanobacteria, also called blue-green algae, produce toxins. The blue-green algae in Lady Bird Lake has sickened and killed several dogs. There were harmful algae blooms in 2019, 2020 and 2021.

Yup good note! We've never brought our dogs to Lady Bird Lake, sucks though because it looks so fun for dogs.

Yup! You can look up Austin drone laws and your drone will let you know too what areas are allowed, for example not near the airport.

Hi, another Austin drone fanatic here. Did you get special permission to film that close to the capitol? I want to film there too but from what I understood, you can't film on Capitol Grounds

0:28 - Actually, that's not true. This Colorado River runs only through the state of Texas. Great video otherwise, from a fellow Austinite.

Technically, it's the Lower Colorado River that starts in the panhandle of Texas and runs south through the Hill Country to Austin and on to the Gulf of Mexico. The LCRA, or the Lower Colorado River authority, based in Austin, maintains and operates the dams on the lakes and reservoirs along the river for flood control, water storage and irrigation to agriculture in south Texas.
