Was two sets of Fuelling 4 valve head's for sale locally recently, one a complete going concern complete with exhaust system. The second needed reworking. Was damn tempted.
Hi from the U.K., I run these heads on my stock 89 Heritage Classic , it looks like the centre post has had to be altered to clear the rear exhaust as it comes out of the head straight back and not offset like a standard Harley engine. Looks great and so far no issues. I also have a built up 88” engine with these heads sitting on the bench that I’ve had for years, long before I bought the Heritage. The castings and engineering are superb.
I ride a '99 Heritage Springer last year evolution motor it's bulletproof. She rides like a dream. I'm going to leave her stock for now. She's still fast enough for me.
I have a 96 springer & love it. Stupidly sold my 02 springer years ago with a cam/gear drive on the 88. Sweet bike. Had to get another springer but wanted the evo. Springer's & evos all the way!!
Love those Heritage Springers. Mine is a 1998. Black with red. Windshield bag and the round duffel bag on a quick release luggage rack. It's not perfect but still pretty sweet. Got the first place trophy at a Harley dealer bike night. I also ride a 1998 Ultra Classic Electra Glide. I'm not sure what I'd do if I could keep only one. Sorry, no 4 valve heads.
I know a guy that runs these heads. He has multiple sets and use to know Feuling. He swears by them. I've rode with him and his bikes are very fast. I heard there was a guy in Florida that was connected with Feuling and he bought the rights to the heads. You should do a video on clutches. Specifically Rivera Primo pro clutch. Now the same clutch is being made by the original designer through American Prime MFG. They are all in the same circles from the past. I found your channel a couple years ago and never miss a video. I love your no nonsense approach and you give some great advice. Keep it up!
I have an 80 cu inch EVO with Edelbrock Street Performer heads and Wisco 10 to 1 pistons, I'm running an Andrew EV27 cam which is mild, stock pipes with the partition removed. The bike dyno's out, without a dyno tune at 85.9 HP and 89 ft tq. I did the work myself in 2000 for the cost of $1,276.00 with James gaskets and that included the cylinder honing by my local Harley dealer.
Jim Feuling was an amazing engineer. He even designed a W triple version of the EVO. H-D first showed some interest in that, then kind of backed away from it. While I found it kind of cool in a way, it added more complexity, and I like simplicity. As for the 4 valve heads, I see no purpose for them. Yes, they may have improved performance, but the EVO Harley was not a performance motorcycle. It was all about looks, sound, and feel. It was a cruiser, and there was no reason for it to go fast. I've always considered Harleys to be more or less touring bikes, and I don't just mean the big baggers with fairings. The FXRs, Dynas, and Softails were the kind of bikes you could strap a bedroll to, and take off across the country, Then Came Bronson style. I always liked that customized Softail Standard on the TV series "Renegade" I could see myself riding that cross country with just the bare essentials strapped to it, Easy Rider style. Lots of power is not required for that kind of riding. It's all about kicking back and relaxing. I have put many happy miles on my 1989 FXRS Low Rider that way.
'96-'99 Evo's are easily the best bug twin engine Harley has ever made, hands down. They sound great, they look great, they run great, they're reliable -- I feel drawn to sell my '23 FXST and buy an old Evo Softail.
You're exactly right! I remember them being a short lived flash in the pan upgrade. For the same amount of money you could have put in a big bore kit, a better cam and had the heads ported and polished to give you more horsepower!
I saw a set of these heads with that carb setup - SOLD $2,000. I have a 1996 Dyna Low Rider Convertible all original & stock. Love the Dyna Love the Evo Thank you Gixx great stuff as always
It was great motor! It's too bad they didn't continue to build on that platform, the M8 is similar but there's a lot they could of done to increase reliability like the Evo!
Back in the 70's early 80's Rivera Engineering made 4 valve heads for Shovelhead engines. They called them "Fuelie Heads". It required the builder to buy 4 extra rocker arms, cut them in half n also cut in half the original rocker arms and have them matched up n precisely welded up n machined to fit the fuelie heads. There were a coupla drag bikes built this way but the concept never took off because of the extra cutting n machining involved in the process and it was not cost effective for most of us, they cost and "arm" and a leg to start with then you had to do all this extra work on the rockers. The idea was good, but the cost was waay to high for most of us. The idea never died as we can see Grampa Harley brought the idea back in the M8's. Yes, they touted it as something new, but the idea behind it was decades old... What's old is new, What's new is old .. 😳
Thank you for sharing! Always interesting content. I have a 1998 evo with stock heads, but I have upgraded exhoust, intake and cam. Did not know that 4-valve heads was an option. My evo runs so well, I will not change anything. Replacing the lifters this winter as a precaution, thats all. Thank you again!
The cost of those heads was always nuts, I would really argue and likely why other than cost they didn't sell really well was you could get a high dollar port job on the two valve heads and make just as much power.
I remember 20 years ago or more seeing a sportster at a dealer and it said hemi on either the side of the rocker box or head. That was the only time I seen something like that.
@GixxerFoo My buddy worked at a dealer it wasn't a harley dealer they worked on everything. If I had a day off because of it being slow at work I would go there and help him and see what they were working on. What they did was they would buy wrecked or stolen bikes from the insurance company and they would rebuild them and sell them. They did complete repairs also it was all brands. The sporty was in there showroom and I seen it I asked my buddy about the heads as we are big chrysler fans. He said that was custom hemi heads made for the harleys. I asked if it was fast he said he never rode it. Nobody really cared about it, they mostly dealt with sport bikes. There was always odd and cool stuff there. My buddy would sell chrome and polished packages for people who wanted more bling on there sport bike The harleys had there own chrome stuff you can buy from there catalog but if there was something they did offer in chrome you would see my buddy. I want to say he started the polished and or chrome frame stuff at least around here. Now nobody wants that they want to black it all out. Sorry for rambling its just a flood of memories.
Been running them for about 20 years now. They are reliable but needed some re engineering on them. I run 2 mikuni 38mm snowmobile carbs on it. Never had it on a dyno but it is a quick and fun bike to ride. Of course it's far from stock
I know a Guy that has his own museum in his bike/ car store. Hé bought a few price winning bikes from Daytona. One of them has a set of 4 valve heads on it.... Don't know if the bike runs as its Just part of the museum.
I had rebuilt a set 4 valve head A couple years ago it’s actually not that difficult the most difficult part is adjusting the valve clearance on top of rocket box also setting the duo Italian carburettors, I end up ditch duo carb when to single S&S super E that makes it running very well since then.
I have a 1990 fxrs with a delkron/s&s 88” that I completely went through and tried to fix the issues known to exist… had bee hive springs made, and used Porsche 911 swivel feet and it really runs. Extremely fast anywhere in the throttle. I posted several videos of going through the heads.
50+ years ago Stan Dishong of Dishon's Cycle Shop in Vallejo, Calif. bforlt a working overhead cam setup on his drag bike. I saw it start up and run and it reved quicker than any Harley I've ever heard.
Thank you bro im building an evo right now an im at a stop still because im trying so hard to come up with something different an you just gave it to me thank you so much really bro i thank you
Had an old friends uncle that had Dyna with those heads but he also did some bottom end work. That bike would scoot. He got them of a friend that dragged bikes. That was years ago nit I think he still has the bike.
I remember seeing these in Cycle World. Seemed like a great idea. Think about engine types though. Torque production trumps HP, like in top fuel dragsters. They use 2 valves and make over 10K HP. But the torque is what gets them to 1000' quick.
Have you or will you do a video on the HTCC heads from Harley. I have read mixed reviews on these. I have an 02 FXDWG with these heads (among other parts) and it scares the hell out of me. Plus you and I both know that the 02 twin cam A engine was the last of the best (actual) production engines. At least I think you may agree. Great info as always 👍
Those are some pretty serious heads from what I recall, 2002 was for sure the last year of the solid and reliable Timken setup. Shame they got away from that in the name of cost savings and more production.
I remember seeing bikes with 4 valve Fueling heads at Daytona Bike Week in the 90s. They weren't real common but they weren't exactly super rare either. The problem with making 100 plus hp on a stock Evolution Harley engine is the engine cases themselves. They would crack. Usually the bikes with Fueling 4 valve heads had aftermarket cases, generally S&S and STD. They were also always on FXR's.
Hey what's going on ,friend? 😄 I like yr vids , so informative. You have the big sign up for Andrews cams . I know yr a Woods fan from previous cam videos you done, so is there any chance you can do a bit of a rundown on Andrews cams for twin cam? They are very common and I think a lot of us would be interested. Keep up the great work. Cheers
Andrews makes some killer cams! They actually manufacture Wood cams built to Bob Wood's specs, Andrews makes some iconic cams and honestly I think a lot of other manufacturers based their designs off Andrews.
I remember them heads . Why I did not want them to get the hp out of them you had to be at 5000 + rpm and with the spark plugs placement you would have to drill holes in the frame to change them or pull the heads.
@@GixxerFoo not a whole lot of riding yet brother... But it won't be much longer now... Just doing a few upgrades to my bike for right now.... Keep those video's coming brother👊🏽😎
Yup ; knew a guy that had em . Drag bike only . There is an interesting article from speedfreak: twin cam more efficient than m8 . The way the m8 brings in air on intake is poor to the two valves . Should been like the v rod : downdraft from top two each valve . Well ; 110 heads sound even better now . ✊🏻👍👌🙏
Thanks for sharing! Interesting you mentioned that, Feuling has 3 valve head for the M8. Curiously the Indian Thunderstroke runs a 3 valve head as well. That's something to thing about!
It is sad and a major loss to V-Twin motorcycling with the passing of Jim Fueling and John Britten at such young ages & the height of their creative genius...
Rivera the now out of business belt drive co also marketed a set of 4 valve heads for EVO engines ! Your exactly right for the money it was an expensive way to make a fast EVO motor ! They are interesting though ! Let's see more high performance stuff that are not bolt on bullshit !
I've seen that 3 cylinder floating around there on the internet, they also make a 3 valve head for the new M8's. Curious idea since it's already a 4 valve but Indian's Thunderstroke is a 3 valve head.
So i bought a 1998 Fatboy from my grandpa and he has had it since new with pretty good maintenance and a lot of miles I got it when it had 53k and it now has almost 58k I've done oil and and whatnot but what kind of things need checked over on these things? What can I do do get this thing running a little better and maybe get some more power? it starts a litttle rough and backfires like crazy when downshifting and has what i believe are Vance and Hines bigshots on it. Dont really want to do a big bore or anything wild but it seems like it could run a bit better than it does now
@@GixxerFoo That's with Branch & O'Keefe heads, reduced piston squish, Wood W6H cam, TH manifold, and Mikuni carb. The tuner was able to pull a little more out of it but set it rich to keep the heat down.
I like the idea of a "4 barrel" on my Harleys, a 6pack on 318 was an amazing increase in fun over 2barrel.....it sucked down gas too, that is if you couldn't keep you foot off the floorboard.
@@GixxerFoo Harley Davidson had 8 valve racing engines back in the teens. The 4 valve Sportster heads that I remember were not Fueling/Rivera, back in the 90's there was an aftermarket co. with the next big thing popping up every week. There is now a lot of energy being spent developing 3 valve heads for the M8.
I had a customer that had a set of the Rivera 4 valve heads it ran good but 4 valve engine usually are high rev engines & that just ain't gonna happen with a pushrod engine !
Ultima I have seen a lot of at the drag strip with guys beating the hell out of them. I would choose Ultima over Revtech, most people either love them or hate them but they do have a good warranty. They've done a lot of R&D and creating their own cases and even crank pins to prevent fly wheel shift. Those motors put down serious power, the more streetable smaller inch engines I would say are very reliable. You get the big one with 140 horse that is what it is, I don't think they warranty that one for more than 30 days.
Very interesting info I never knew...thanks! Think its best to stick with big bore kits for the sporties like Hammer Performance 1275 or the S&S Hooligan Kit. Keep rocking, GixxerFoo!
You could run two carbs with these heads, the one on the right handled idle, cruise and midrange but at wide open throttle the other carb on the left opened up just like a vacuum secondary on a 4 barrel per say.
oh, so these are what i found in old man dutch's place. He had a set of them, but they were missing pieces. there sitting in a oily bag on the shelf, maybe i can get him to sell them to me.
Really?! I would try and get those if you can, if you got the rocker arms you're in business. Valves, keepers, seats, springs that can all be sourced but the rockers are proprietary to those heads.
I put a set on my 1988 Tour Glide , they were stoopid money , I could be wrong , but I wanna say they were around $3500 , for the money I would have been better off building a bullet proof stroker .. Harley cases were not up to the task , Axtell or S&S would have been better .. I think after my trials with them , that if there was a flaw in the design , I believe the valves were too big for the motor ..
Twice as much valve face surface to burn or leak, twice as many springs to compress, I don't know, sounds a lot less reliable, especially on an EVO that's not even a balanced motor. Besides, adding a lot of compression and power requires changing to forged pistons, connecting rods, stronger pushrods, etc. Maybe it makes sense for racing... but not really, I mean who races a pushrod motor anymore. For a lot less money I can buy a used Softail with a 107 M8, stage-1 it, and call it a day. Don't get me wrong, I love my 1200 EVO but it is what it is and I'm just fine with that. Nothing wrong with an S&S kit and a tune, still reliable enough. Anything beyond that is getting a bit sketchy, sh!t's gonna break.
The heads and the valve train were very reliable, but like you mentioned you're playing with fire on the factory cases increasing compression and getting really wild.
Wow, this is my first time hearing about these heads. Sounds impressive, but need a better business model. They should have been thinking long term and looking at sales volume instead of profit per set. Low cost volume always wins. Hey, maybe China will start making them. LOL!!!
I wouldn't be shocked if you could order a 4 valve knock off head right out of China. May work, may not, may for a little while and then cost a motor, always a risk using China made parts.
Hardly Dependable's claim to fame is tractor like torque. Four valve heads increase flow for higher R.P.M. engines. 6 k rev's out of a long stroke turdly Ferguson is no reason to double the amount of parts thrashin around above that diesel like stroke. Ya can't polish a turd. And it will most likely increase price's to over 50 k.
I agree the 4 valve head would really shine at wide open throttle, that's why the drag racers loved those heads. But a good port job on the two valve head would give you more than you wanted for the street.
I've always heard of them, knew they existed but never have I seen one on a street bike. I've seen custom hand built 4 valve heads for drag bikes at the races.
I keep hearing people say they have seen these heads on a Sportster, I never even heard of that only the big twin. I am going to have to ask around about that some more.
@@johnbarrett7534 You obviously have never ridden something genuinely fast like a ZX14R, Busa, ZX10R, R1, CBR1000R, GSXR1000, H2. If you have then you WOULD NOT be impressed by ANYTHING Harley has EVER made.

Yup, I remember the Fueling 4 valve heads for the Evo, always wanted them to make them for the Twin Cam, oh well...
Didn't Fueling produce a 3 cylinder 'Harley' motor for a short while?
They did, Feuling built one!
It looked promising for the Twin Cam in the mid 2000's, but it never went into production.
Great Video !!!
Thank you! I appreciate the support!
Honestly wide open throttle was the only place they really shined!
I'm hoping to one day to own a m8 114 road king special
I gotta say Harley-Davidson knocked it out of the park on that one! A friend at work has one and it's a slick bike!
Now you have my attention...I see a new quest in the making...98 Evo FLSTC 4 valve heads? Yeah Bro...Mikey Likey
They are really trick if you can find a set!
Another awesome video my Foo brother👊🏽😎
Thank you! Hope you been getting some riding in!
@@GixxerFoo not a whole lot of riding yet brother... But it won't be much longer now... Just doing a few upgrades to my bike for right now.... Keep those video's coming brother👊🏽😎
Is the 4 valves why the M8 feels like crap?
The 4 valves breathe better no doubt, but the M8 just doesn't have the sound the Evo had with the 4 valve head.
You can hop a Harley engine up to the point where you've made a nice two-cylinder hand-grenade. Stock is Trick.
It's easy to do especially if you go to far!
This is the first time hearing this, I wonder what the rocker arms look like?
They are proprietary to the units, if you broke one I don't know what you would do today for a replacement.
They are a work of art
It is sad and a major loss to V-Twin motorcycling with the passing of Jim Fueling and John Britten at such young ages & the height of their creative genius...
Rivera the now out of business belt drive co also marketed a set of 4 valve heads for EVO engines ! Your exactly right for the money it was an expensive way to make a fast EVO motor ! They are interesting though ! Let's see more high performance stuff that are not bolt on bullshit !
Do a little research & do a piece on Fuelings 3 cylinder Dynas they built ! I saw one at Sturgis probably 15 years back pretty cool !
I've seen that 3 cylinder floating around there on the internet, they also make a 3 valve head for the new M8's. Curious idea since it's already a 4 valve but Indian's Thunderstroke is a 3 valve head.
You can get wild going beyond the bolt ons, I guess technically a stroker crank is a bolt on albeit just much more time consuming.
@@GixxerFoo Fueling claims the 3 valve head flows more air then the stock M8 head !
Didn't Edelbrock make a 4 valve head for the EVO also?
I don't recall if they made a 4 valve, but they made some awesome off the shelf bolt on 2 valve heads that were very popular.
Sputhe had a 4 valve head for sportsters in the late 70s 80s
That's interesting! I'll have to check into that and see if there's any of those still floating around!
Dont really want to do a big bore or anything wild but it seems like it could run a bit better than it does now
Seen these on drag bikes here in Australia
What I'd be interested in, is a turbo kit for a Merch 120.
Yeah, I'm getting 100hp/106q out of my 80in so it would need to give me at least 110 for it to be worth while.
That's some damn good numbers out of a 80 inch Evo! A set of those heads sounds like it would work well with your setup!
I've seen them on the Evo & Sportster engine.
On the Sportster? I have never even heard of anyone putting them on the Sportster motor, that could be interesting with a 1275 kit from Hammer.
I’ve always wondered
There was 4 valve big twins before the factory made it happen!
Just watched your video on Twin cam 103 bolt in cams, noticed you didn’t have the S&S M103, your input would be appreciated. D W
Would a set of 4 valve heads fit a merch performance motor?
No the bolt pattern on the heads is way smaller then the 4&1/4 bore of a Merch !
Tell me something please. Give you opinion on the Ultima engines. Thanks.
These are Big Twin Evo heads, not for the Sportster Evo.
😎👍 Big thumbs up...
Thank you! Cheers!
Are you describing a 4 bbl carb for a motorcycle?
You could run two carbs with these heads, the one on the right handled idle, cruise and midrange but at wide open throttle the other carb on the left opened up just like a vacuum secondary on a 4 barrel per say.
I really miss carburetors!
oh, so these are what i found in old man dutch's place.
@@GixxerFoo i think there missing, when i get the old man on his feet ill see if we can find them. all i have to say is ex wife, i hope we find them.
If it ain't broke don't fix it or you'll go broke, sticking with a stock 95, never seen 4 valve heads
I still think good head work on the 2 valve heads would do you plenty, unless you're drag racing the 4 valve head wouldn't do much for you.
No , never owned a bike with that set up. Seriously considering picking up an Evo however....
Evo is one the greatest engines of all time from Harley. You could even still get a long block, factory rebuilt all fresh up through 2013.
Doesn't a 4-valve hedge take power away from the bottom end?
The 4 valve head wouldn't hurt your bottom end, most of that power is really determined in your choice of exhaust.
Obvious question , can you bolt on the Milwaukee 8 cylinder head to an evolution engine??? Or a twin cam engine??
The milwaukee 8 heads won't bolt onto the other engines. The twin cam heads are interchangeable.
Probably has a 7mm or smaller valve stem too. Screw that...
Gixxer deep dive...... Too deep 4 me
This is going way back in the Harley-Davidson lore, there were some really trick parts out there in the 90's and early 2000's.
Basically, Basically, Basically, Basically, God Damn it. There are other words. No more Basically!
I'm looking for some!
@@GixxerFoo Try essentially, mostly. mainly.
primarily. largely. chiefly. predominantly.
generally. principally.
I'm here for you.
@@zavlo72 basically it looks like your dictionary is too😂
Twice as much valve face surface to burn or leak, twice as many springs to compress, I don't know, sounds a lot less reliable, especially on an EVO that's not even a balanced motor.
Changing spark plugs in those heads must've been a real b**** lol
😎👍👍
Nope, never seen them.
Nope never seen any.. they might be like hens teeth 🐥
I've always heard of them, knew they existed but never have I seen one on a street bike. I've seen custom hand built 4 valve heads for drag bikes at the races.
@@GixxerFoo 👍🏍️
Chepper and better buy yamaha xvs 1900
WTF!!! 👎
I would love to see a set of these made for the 1203 sporty motor.
I keep hearing people say they have seen these heads on a Sportster, I never even heard of that only the big twin. I am going to have to ask around about that some more.
As an added note, my ZX11 back in the day NEVER LOST TO A HARLEY. Doesn't really matter what you do to a Harley they're still going to be slow.
You haven't ridden the new Sportster S or the Pan American yet.
@@johnbarrett7534 My 21 Ninja 1000SX devours those regularly.
While not the fastest, they are far from slow. I am running mid 10's at Bithlo dragstrip with the Sportster S.
