- I step through how much I've spent on my 100 Series Land Cruiser over the past year. I also cover how much I spent on Fzjerald and what I "made" on the deal.

I’m going to tell you my story if you will allow. I’m 71 I live in Las Vegas I owned an FJCruiser 2007 loved it but just too small. Like you I became enamored with the Land Cruisers. I wanted an 80 series for the solid front axle full time four wheel drive. My budget as a retired guy on a small pension limited my choices. I found a 91 owned by a marine in 29 palms ca. Who was being transferred to South Carolina with a wife and two kids. It was a California truck it’s whole life. SF San Bernardino then the marine base in the desert. It had 211 k on its Tractor engine and tractor transmission. I rented a pickup drove over and paid $3,000 dollars. I did exactly what you did all fluids belts baskets replaced radiator alternator tube up new battery etc he kept impeccable records no rust anywhere. The little leak on the garage floor indicated the main seal needed to be addressed. So in total 5k in. Like me it’s an older unit but Nigel and I needed each other I named the truck Nigel. I wanted a desert camper and explorer I have a big chocolate lab that loves to sit in the back when it’s in the garage. We can’t go fast don’t really want to. The beauty of the unit is its ability to endure. Every Land Cruiser story is unique get into one for the right reasons love your passion and it will fulfill all your expectations. Please leave any questions or comments and remember they are all a work in progress. Incidentally mine is not lifted and has cloth interior I would never beat it up rock crawl it or ford rivers in it. But that’s just me.

just a great video, i’ve had my 99 about ten years now, and my folder is a little bigger lol, the fact that you can do a lot of work yourself helps big time ! ,i watched the video where you did your seats over, your a great muti-tech for sure !! , i can tell you we need all the videos we can get on the older 100 series land cruiser, thanks for taking the time and effort 👍
Thanks! Doing my best. The best part about a niche vehicle is the myriad of articles, videos, and how-to's from the community for that niche. One of many reasons to own a Land Cruiser.
Nice video with good information. My family has had 10 LX/LCs as daily drivers the last 24 years and nothing else. We currently have five of them and two have over 400k. My experience, without a shadow of a doubt, is that these beasts of vehicles are very cheap to own. Regarding your "maintenance" information you discussed before talking about lift, awning, etc., most of that is NOT necessary maintenance that someone else may think they would expect to pay when owning a LC. And that included a good bit of cash you were counting as maintenance. A lot of what you say was "maintenance", like baselining fluids, was your personal preference and decision. The other option is to check all the fluids. If they look good, smell good and taste good, there is no "need" to change them as a maintenance item. OCD maintenance can really skew the Land Cruiser cost of ownership curve when it is literally unneeded to have, drive and keep the best machine on wheels ever created. Ask me how I know.
Do any of your 10 LC/LXs see extensive off-road or remote use? Would that change your maintenance methodology?
@@thelandcruiserproject Most of them, excluding the newest 2000 and 2006 models, have been my daily work vehicles for many many miles. I am a wildlife biologist and land broker managing timberland. I am in the woods every day. I do not crawl rocks or mud ride for recreation but I do ride the woods every day. So most of my LX/LCs have been off road quite a bit. I would use them then pass them down to my boys when they started driving. Then buy another one. Two have not been offroad. They are owned by my girls.
The prices are going up. I recently bought a 1998 LC with 202K miles, the Timing Belt and WP was done at 184K. Its super clean, leather, new tires, but no rear locker. I'm replacing the shocks/struts and tie rods (about $1k including labor). The one thing I did not check until later was the sunroof....ugh, does not work. I found the LC on Craigslist from a reputable dealer in the Seattle area and put a deposit on it. The day I picked it up, 2 other people were inquiring about while I was doing the paperwork. So....I paid $12K for it, thoughts?. My wife still wont talk to me but that's kind of a bonus lol.
Hah, maintenance is very valuable. I am totally confused on pricing but it seems like a decent price. If it’s well maintained and rust-free, you’re in a good spot.
That is a good price. I found a suuper clean one and I’m $16,2 all in. I could probably sell it for 18 to 20k right now on a particular auction site. Instead I’ll keep it until I die.
Just barely missed out on a new project. Locked 99 with 177k miles full service records, CA car $10.9k
They guy that got it is reselling within a week for $16.8k. That kind of flip is gross.

That's super cool that you were able to find a 100 without a sunroof. I always wanted to find a super rare cloth seat 98/99 but ended up going with a well priced LX.
And that's what pains me to ever sell it. Might not get a chance to buy one again until the 105s come to town.

I had a 2003 Land Cruiser I bought sight unseen from Illinois for $13,000. ~ 150,000 miles. Had lots of rust, for being an Illinois car. Ran great. Interior beautiful. Tons of torque for towing a boat. I hit a big black bear at 60mph head on, and it barely made a dent. The Rear A/C didn't work, and therefore the Front A/C didn't work. It was going to be very expensive to fix the Rear A/C.
Sounds maybe like the bear did you a favor, but too bad for the LC.

Bought a 1994 as the second owner in 1998 for $21000. 7 seater so camp trips with my two kids and a friend each for the first 10 years. College years came so it was used to move both in and out of sorority life. Then I bought a hundred year old house that carried loads of supplies. Retired early, spent the last ten over landing and car camping. Kind of full circle except now it has Arb bull bar, Kaymar rear, ome suspension, 35s, white knuckle sliders, KC lights. My daughters laugh that I’ve put $5000 into a 27 yr old truck. Over maintained. Bottom line, I love the truck. I look at the new ones, $100000 out the door, and they just don’t pull at me like the 94. Glad to hear you’re using it and keeping it indefinitely. It’ll serve you well. If I calculate the total cost of ownership divided by years, I’m in the $1500 a year ballpark. You just need to keep it longer!

Hello from Europe :-) The big difference is whether you do the maintenance: 1) mainly yourself 2) OEM service 3) Toyota service. In Europe we need for golden middle way for average user of J10 aprox. 1000 Euro / 1 year / 10.000 Km. (off road equipment is different story). Happy motoring guys.
Using the vehicle off pavement multiplies the costs. It's worth it, right?

Currently saving for some sort of overland ready rig and I think the 100 series is the perfect fit. Do you mind me asking why having a sunroof is such a dealbreaker for you? I feel like most roof racks don’t interfere with this. Is there a different reason?
I'm 6'9" tall. My head rubs the headliner if there's a sunroof. Also, there's less maintenance without sunroof motors and seals and drains.
I don't think you over paid, definitely worth it in the long run. Awesome car 👍

Seems like a decent price if it's clean and not rusty.
I bought my 2006 LC for $17k in early 2019. It had 114k miles on it and had two owners. (The first owner was the manager at the Toyota dealership.). The car has only been in Southern CA.
What have you had to spend in maintenance?
Purchase price for the mileage, no rust, and 06 seems very good.

Outstanding and informative video. I do have a question, I own a 99 LC myself, and I am curious why you keeping referring to the sunroof as a bad thing to avoid. I haven't had it for too long so I am still learning the ins and outs as well as things to avoid. Thanks in advance for your feedback.
So for me it's primarily an issue because of my height. My head rubs on the ceiling since it's lower with a sunroof.
Beside that, the sunroofs can be a maintenance issue. The gaskets around them can leak, the drains can get clogged, and the motors can wear out.
On the 100 series though, there are so few without sunroofs It's not really reasonable to think you can get one without.

Thanks for video. I'm looking a LC serie 80 or 100 like secondary car... you know, maybe tow a small boat. I like the aggressive look of series 80 but a lot videos said it's too slow.. the series 100 is better... but I see the 100 series is more hard to do modifications (suspension, big tires, etc). What's you opinion? I have some mechanic skill...
If you are looking to tow a small boat, are you really looking for off-road opportunities that will requires suspension modifications? Those two use cases probably don't play nice. If you want a rock crawler or heavy duty offroader, get an 80. If you want to tow your boat and sometimes handle rougher roads, get a 100.
Can 100 series cruisers be supercharged? The 4.7 4runners can be with the rotex. But I’ve never seen anything about the 100 series being comparable

This list makes me feel really lucky with my experience (99 LX). If you’re thinking of getting into one of these, don’t fee that you’ll be out 20k. Likely half that on average, sometimes less.
I've admittedly been a little rough on it, too. Several thousand $ are the result of playing hard.
I’m looking for either a LC 100/200, Tundra, or Sequoia to tow my FJ40, about 6000lbs total trailer weight. Got a recommendation for which would be best for that? Thanks
Anything with a 5.7 would make easy work of it (LC200, newer Tundra and Sequoia). It depends on what else you're doing with the towing vehicle that would point you one way or the other as would cost.
I am wondering your opinion about LC100 vs Tundra from the same era. They have the same engine, but the Tundras are easier to find and cheaper. Maybe do a video about this topic
If I do that I'll have to buy one!!! Always loved the first gen Tundras. 4.7L Access Cab with rear cargo off-road tray setup would be a great build.
I've got a 2000 Land Cruiser with 168,000 and still have not done the timing belt. Might do it at 200k. We'll see.

There's more to it than what I shared, but it's a start. They are both amazing. Keep in mind, there were almost 90,000 100 series sold in the US and the 200 series might barely break 40,000. There are A LOT more 100s out there.
The new Land Cruiser is one of the best.

On the sunroof, it's a tight fit for me since I'm 6'9" tall and need all the headroom I can get. The sunroof retracts into the cab and reduces headroom.

I think I might keep my Range Rover instead of swapping to the 100 series as it didn’t cost me hardly anything except a brake line & 2 tyres last year.
Using it off road or just highways and other paved streets? How old is it and how many miles?
@@thelandcruiserproject It’s a 2004 L322 4.4 V8 with 146,000 miles on it. Only ever been used on tarmac but I’m looking to build an overlanding vehicle that’s why I’m looking at the 100 series. I did just buy a 90 series LC d4d but I don’t like it as I’m a little spoilt by Range Rover so now thinking of buying a 100 series.
Like your video. Nothing like a Land Cruiser. We bought a new one in 1995, and drove it for 350,000 miles. We sold it in November 2019 and found a 2000 series 100. It had 93,000 miles on it, and was in like new condition. It had been owned by someone in Beverly Hills, so it had been garaged for twenty years. I don’t think it was ever off-roaded. Carfax had twenty years of records of regular maintenance at Hollywood Toyota. So we got lucky, paid $15,500 plus tax and license for it. What a great car!

The Land Cruiser Project BTW. if you ever look for another Land Cruiser, Southern Cal is the place. There are lots of them there. Most are soccer mom drivers that have never been off roaded. No rust issues and well maintained. A lot of people buy them for status only (but that’s California for you. Lol)
Agreed! You pay a premium for them for sure. The other factor is that it seems like there are a lot down there too (a disproportionate amount).
The Land Cruiser Project yes. We bought ours there in November and drove it home to New Hampshire in December. We haven’t seen one Land Cruiser, except for about a week ago. We saw a 95 series 80 in western Pennsylvania. They are pretty rare.
How many miles does your have?
I just picked up a 2001 LC with 188k for 11k they are going up crazy in value
We are at 167k miles on the 100 series. I think you're right, but there are still a lot of cheap beaters out there.

I paid 6k for my 99 at an auction, had all the records on Toyota owners. 200k with both lockers. Only surprise was a poor windshield replacement that rusted out the spaces in between. That should be about 1500 to fix. What’s the issues with the sunroof?
Clogged drains and motor failure. Not to mention it's a big whole cut in the roof.
The Land Cruiser Project every 4Runner I’ve owned had a sunroof. I live in Michigan so I only get to use it on nice days. Maybe something I should just leave in the locked position lol

HEH yea I am slowly creeping up the price I bought it for, on the repairs and new OME suspension, replacing the AHC. its... terribly expensive, new dual batery system. Still I need to seal the engine, new injection system (diesel - yeah =/ ) I need to clean up, weld up and treat the frame ... and as last cherry on the top it will be engine and transmission skid, rock sliders, and rear and front reinforced bumper with bullbar and winch. when I finish the price in total will be around 500 000 czk ( 1$=21.44czk ) price. which is about 4 times more than I expected to ever spend on a car (originally wanted to buy jimny, or russian uaz or something along those lines xD or maybe Hilux)

@@thelandcruiserproject That price is WITH the price for the car (clerification) Yes It was in czech mountains, I got it pretty beaten up. Banged from both sides and front (covered up well, became apparent after few months) AHC was leaking, servo was leaking, starter and turbo was holding on the last pin, rear diff. was leaking cause the axle had 2cm waggle back and forward. brake fluid was leeking, handbrake nonfunctional, rear difflock rusted nonfunctional - replaced it. and so on xD that list is very very long xD.

My opinion: 100 all day every day
Last year, I drove my 2006 LC from the Los Angeles area to Port Angeles, WA, and back. It was a very comfortable drive.
I wanted a 95-2002 era toyota. Taco, tundra, 4runner, even a Sequoia. Found a 99 100 series with 174k in rough shape. More so than I realized. I paid 4400 for it all said and done, dmv stuff too. Can't decide if I over paid or came out alright, all the Toyotas in my area have 200k plus miles and go for 10k or more.
How much are you into it now?
Your base price should put you in a good spot.

Swapped the failing hydraulic brake booster for conventional vacuum operated one
Did a CAT delete and Doug thorley cat back exhaust
Abs delete
255/85r16 Yokohama Geo Landers muddies
Iron man lift without rear control arms
Timing belt, water pump, Cam and valve seals etc
Radiator, ac condenser
Making skid plates, front winch bumper, Costal off-road rear weld up bumper
Idk man I try not to think about it. I know I loose money if I sell this thing but in the mean time I know almost every but and bolt it feels like.

100 series feels like a new truck tbh. Mine has 200k and is smooth as silk.
