The 1967 Copa Libertadores de América was the eighth edition of the most important club tournament in South America, organized by the South American Football Confederation, which involved teams from ten South American countries: Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay and Venezuela.
The champion was Racing Club, which thus achieved its first title in the competition. He played in the 1967 Intercontinental Cup against Celtic of Scotland and automatically qualified for the semi-finals of the 1968 Copa Libertadores.
The 1967 Copa Libertadores final was played between Racing de Argentina and Nacional de Uruguay. Both teams were looking to win the Copa Libertadores for the first time.
The first leg was played in Argentina at El Cilindro and would end up tied 0-0. The second leg was played in Uruguay at the Estadio Centenario and would also end up tied 0-0. Because both teams ended up equal in points and in goal difference, they had to play a third match, which was played in Chile at the Estadio Nacional and in which Racing would defeat Nacional by 2-1.
It was the fourth Copa Libertadores final - the third in a row - to be defined on a neutral court (third match).
The champion would play the 1967 Intercontinental Cup with Celtic of Scotland, and also qualified for the next edition of the Copa Libertadores.

Guided by the talent of Humberto Maschio, Racing de Avellaneda swept into Group 2. With just a draw with River and an unexpected loss to Bolivia's October 31, the Albicelestes took first place in the standings.
At his stadium in Avellaneda, Racing was relentless with his opponents achieving several goals. Independiente Santa Fé, Bolívar, Independiente Medellín and the 31 october itself became victims of a sweeping front.

River Plate, the other Argentine team, was also a flattening team with respect to their rivals. For example, on October 31, he suffered a 7-0 defeat with the millionaires that leaves no doubt about the huge differences.
Registered forever in the memory of the racingists and internationally recognized, the Racing team of those years of the 1960s was popularly known as the José Team. A title that immortalized him and paid a fair tribute to whoever his driver was: Juan José Pizzuti.

Si no me equivoco creo que el estadio Centenario de Uruguay, el estadio Nacional de Chile, son los estadios donde más finales de libertadores se han jugado.
Racing consiguió la copa gracias a River, porque al momento de jugar River en Lima contra la U, Racing y Universitario igualaban en puntos, si la U le ganaba a River(cosa probable porque River andaba muy mal), se clasificaba a la final y Racing quedaba afuera, sin embargo, River se jugó la vida, Gatti le ataja sobre el final un penal a Chumpitaz y le da la clasificación a Racing.
Que equipo era el Universitario de lima!! Nada que ver con estos tiempos

Universitario de deportes pudo haber ido a la final...Racing movió mar y tierra para que se juegue en Chile...sabiendo la cercanía de los argentinos y el odio de los chilenos a los Peruanos....La U perdió la final aquí en Lima...debió ganarle a River y empataron...con esto le dieron vida a Racing que empató con la U en puntaje. River jugó para Rcaing...Gatty se tapó un penal de Hector Chumpitaz en el minuto final...
Un episodio fundamental para el logro de Racing. River tranquilamente pudo haber perdido ese partido en Lima y no pasaba nada, Racing quedaba afuera, sin embargo River se jugó la vida para favorecerlo a Racing, y para qué??....luego cuando River necesitó de Racing (1-4 contra Vélez Nacional '68,. 2-3 vs. Indep´te Metro '70), partidos que con sólo empatar Racing, el campeón era River, sin embargo Racing siempre hocicó.
Es amargo Racing ganaron está libertadores de milagro

Estas equivocado el primer antecedente es de 1948 torneo organizado por Colo Colo llamado Campeonato sudamericano de campeones jugado en el estadio Nacional de santiago, en donde participaron River plate de Argentina, Nacional de Uruguay,Deportivo Municipal de Perú, Emelec de Ecuador, Deportivo Litoral de Bolivia Vasco da Gama de Brasil y Colo Colo de Chile,en donde Vasco da Gama fue campeon invicto es por ese motivo que fue invitado al torneo Super Copa de 1998 y por parte de la FIFA y la Conmebol lo consideran como el antecesor de la Copa libertadores de América apartar de 1960 pero comenzó a organizarse en 1959 considerando como antecedente este torneo organizado por Colo Colo

La U de Peru le gano a river plate u racing en avellaneda en solo 48 horas 0-1 y 2-1 respectivamente, el desempate para avanzar a la semifinal en campo(chile) neutral fue una masacre(los argentinos apelaron a toda clase de artimañas de racing contra la U con la anuencia del arbitro como siempre aliados de los argentinos.
