Such an inappropriate remark I have not heard before. Only perhaps from people who do not understand about the relationship between music and its performance. In the Far East, no matter how excellent musicians are technically and they all are, they have to have special training in the West to learn how to translate their emotions into their performance if they want to make an international carreer. The necessity for this training is deeply rooted in the Far Eastern culture in families and society. I would strongly recommend you to watch for example "The Korean music mystery" documentary film. Without this kind of training, in a competition you end up with musicians who look the same and play the same.
Until Lang Lang recorded his Chopin piano concertos No.1 and 2 and I had the pleasure to listen to them live, I also thought he was more of a performer.
His latest Bach Goldberg variations is a masterpiece performance. To improve it even more he took a long trip to former East Germany to trace the life of Bach step by step.
I respect this man also for his support of young musicians, especially children.
So we let him express himself, the way he wants and sees fit I think.
