Why I don't ride anymore - A story from Paul about why he stopped

From a question posed to me by a journalist, I asked around for someone that gave up riding. Paul's story is heartbreaking but beautiful. The reason affects us all. We all make choices, and this is the right one for Paul.

Since the 1m rule came out in Victoria, I noticed almost everyone giving me space. Truck drivers are amazing. Sadly, I still get 1 car a day that ignores the rule, and scares the shit out of me.
For now, the mental benefit, is outwaying the risk of death, or disabilty.

No law is relevant if the police don’t actively enforce it.
South Australian (Gawler) roads are no better sadly. I am a relatively new rider and after a number of close passes, including at least 2 punishment passes by the SAME driver, I now stick to back roads and will only ride an 80km zone if there is a bike lane. Of course I can ride the dedicated bike tracks near me, and I do, but I find myself wanting to explore: I am fortunate that we have some great tracks in SA. While not ideal, I find the 100km zones in my semi-rural areas, with low traffic to be among the safest.
As Paul stated, the self-entitled drivers are the ones who need to change. Until the government and police get serious about protecting all vulnerable road users, I unfortunately do not see any change in the near future 😢 For me, the saddest part of my last sentence, is the family and friends who I have to count among the self-entitled.......
I've ridden once in the last 12 months ... bored
