- The Boston Celtics have been re-signing and extended Celtics players during NBA Free Agency. 25 minutes after the Boston Celtics extended Derrick White, Wyc Grousbeck announced the Celtics were up for sale. Now, odds have been released on who could become the next owner of the Boston Celtics and take over the NBA team who just recently became the world champions and hung up banner 18. How will the next owner be able to keep up with the over $200 million dollar pay roll over the next couple of years? Celtics Today host Allie Barefoot breaks down Celtics rumors on today’s show.

I think it’s Steve Pagliuca, who was really the number two owner on this team the whole time, and was somebody that you’d see him on the podium. He didn’t have the steering wheel, and you always knew he wanted it, and he ran for political office in Massachusetts, spent a ton of money on his campaign and didn’t get it. He went for the Nets a few years ago and had it, he had the Nets, and I forget what happened at the 11th hour, something happened, he froze or he backed off for a split second and Joe Tsai stepped in and took it.

Well, Irving Grousbeck is 89 years old, and probably still has significant equity in the team. Irving has 4 kids including Wyc, so the shares wouldn't just go to Wyc; they'd be inherited by other children, who may not want to own a basketball team. Meanwhile, diluting control/shares is also a way to make running the organization more chaotic, and Wyc probably doesn't want to buy out all the shares. Also, Wyc's 2 kids, ex-wife, and current wife are all seemingly not interested in running the team themselves.
So, it makes sense for the Grousbecks to move on.
