Your reactions, 10/10. Your form, 3/10. Watching you butterfly slide in old school Jofas, priceless. My coach used to make me skate suicides if I dropped onto my knees. Or he’d come knock me down and yell, you can’t move if your not in your feet. Watch me now coach.
Hahaha I’m glad your coach wasn’t there for this skate!! I don’t think I’d make it out alive!
Soooo much yes to a vintage instructional series! I go back and watch Jim Park’s The Puck Stops Here 1&2 way too often.
I think it’d be an awesome video to do!! Thanks Bones!!
Yeah!! I love those videos. I’d probably do basically the same thing but have a little fun with it
Seeing the vintage gear makes me yearn or the good old days when I rocked the Langes, Bourdons, CCM goalie pants, Cooper jock and knee pads, Cooper SA 95 arm pads, CCM Chest pad, Cooper GM 12 and GM 21 gloves, Vic goal stick, CCM helmet with the Cooper HM 30 cage, until a puck went through the cat's eye a got me at the left eye brow. I switched to the CCM cage that had the straight bars.
Yeah, I'm a vintage goalie who is still kicking them out at age 60! With the modern Vaughn gear.
What a setup!! And yeah I took one to the cage in this helmet and it dented all the into my cheek. Luckily old left a little cut.
Those definitely pre-date my old CCM anchor weights from the mid 90s. Can't imagine ever wearing those again, much less heavier, older skates. You're a brave man!
Wait a minute......toe ties? That's not vintage!! Haha. Love it Dustin. Can't get more vintage than Lange ski boot style.
Hahaha gotta ditch the toe ties on those. Especially since I have the skates to go with it
Great video Bonesy!! You definitely have got the moves to put on a full vintage goalie clinic for sure! You even had the vintage threads on walking into the locker room.
If the vintage gear has any purpose, other than just looking cool, it shows how those guys that played back then were such superior athletes. The reactionary type saves and just the shear weight of the equipment tells a heroic tale about how awesome those guys really were. Thanks for doing this video Dustin. Ton of fun to watch!!
Glad you liked it buddy!! And yeah just the “do whatever it takes” approach to stopping pucks makes for some very creative saves. Not as robotic as goalies nowadays
I've had countless top shelf goalie skates over the decades and hands down the most comfortable were my Langes...got them in 1977 and wore them over 10 years. The right skate hinge split and that was the end if them...loved them!
6:41 Now that was a kick save 🤙
Love this! Knit socks would add to the vintage feel!
Yeah I couldn’t find my black knit socks when I was packing my bag. Gotta get my hand on a few pair for next time
Love it!! I used that type of gear back in the late 80’s & early 90’s…. Then I bought new gear in 2008….
Ha! I wore equipment in goal that would curl your toes! Had CCM Tacks goalie skates, Cooper pads and gloves. The biggest joke of stuff I wore was the chest protector and separate arm pads! Huge gaps in protection all around!
I felt like I got injured every time I was at practice or a game. The pads we have today are amazing and invincible compared to my early 70’s gear!
Nothing but quilted pads in them, half your sides and arms weren't covered.
I played with the Bauer white boot goalie skates. Had them flat sharpened to glide better side to side. Also used cooper 36” deer hair stuffed pads with the GX21 glove you have. How do you like those nice heaven non curved sticks!! You need to get the goalie book by Jacques Plante. It will teach you the correct way to be a stand up goalie. Great video!
First off, we HAVE to get you some leather toe buckles for those pads. 😂
Secondly, I can only imagine how much difference you felt from your normal skate to those tanks. Don’t skip leg day wearing leather and lange’s.
Great job as always, Bones. 👊
Thanks buddy!! And yeah I keep forgetting about those until I’m lacing them through the skates. Definitely need to fix that. And you’re right about leg day! They were surprisingly comfortable and played great but holy wow were my legs tired afterwards
Coopergoalie gave me an idea someone should rewrite "Leather & Lace" by Nicks & Henley to "Leather & Lange's" and have it be about vintage goalie gear
I'm willing to help with the vintage instructional series.
Yes they are heavy!!! I had a pair back in the day ..My Lange's broke at the hinge thingy as you said...For an old school camp that would be great, you need guys like me who played in the 70s ...
I think at some point I’ll need to have the tongues repaired. Part of the hard plastic inside cracked already and after a while it was starting to dig into the top of my foot. Awesome skate though. And I should be taking pointers from guys like you that played back then! Anything you think I should work on?
We didn't do paddle down back in the day, only if you wanted to get killed...also I had my gloves in front of me..One day we must talk....Keep up the great work!!!!
Wow I didn’t even think about the lack of paddle down. Feel free to hit me up! Always down to chat
Lange goal skates the ones you have the blades with the loops on them were made in England 🇬🇧 by Sheffield Steel who are known for making knives...
the skaters excitement and level of play went from 1 to a 100 the minute you went into the net you made their day
@@BonesyTV I’ll be posting a video. Soon. I bought billy smiths blue and orange pads he wore in 1984 cup finals. Having the colored restored right now. I’m Going to wear them in one of my dek hockey games. I just got cooper gm 12 brown blocker and glove off eBay. To complete the look
@@BonesyTV I debated restoring the color but I had to. They were faded from hanging in window of equipment store for over 30 years. They were. Gray. I’m not sure if will effect resale value. But I don’t care. Lol
I say do whatever makes you enjoy them more. That’s more valuable than resale
Bonesy has a goaltending style reminiscent of Ken Dryden; pretty cool! 🤩
Haha still need some work on the vintage style but even being considered close to Dryden is a huge compliment
As someone who plays completely in stand up style id love a vintage instructional series
Love seeing modern players trying out vintage gear! Lange started a revolution in hockey skates. They originally made ski boots, but their skates were the first with molded plastic uppers instead of the boot leather that had been used up to that point. Langes were also famously comfortable compared to leather skates. The problem, as you could see, was that they were HEAVY. But Bauer picked up using plastic, made improvements, and the rest is history. Lange still makes recreational skates for public skating, but they‘ve been out of the hockey business since the early 80s.
See I didn’t even know all of that!! I’ve been seeing more and more of these lange goalie skates popping up in Facebook groups and heard great things about them. Pretty pumped to have them now
Love it
Dude…I have no idea who you are, but you must have played some hockey because you are a very good goalie! Awesome to see the old gear and the stand-up style! Great video!
Oh thanks! I appreciate that. It’s fun trying to play that style. Almost a totally different position when you add the gear to the mix too
Bones you should rock a fiberglass mask. A Pelĺe Lindbergh mask. And yes I will attend your vintage goalie school. Lol. Serious
Gotta work up the courage to rock one of those like that. Would be super fun though. Maybe if everyone was using a vintage player stick too.
Those are just like my first pair of goalie skates - great find! Kudos for trying to play with boat anchors
Hahaha that’s a great way to describe them. Did I say the name correct at all?? I didn’t even think about that until I was saying it out loud
@@BonesyTV you had the name right - Lange with a hard ‘g’ not “Lanj”…it’s pretty interesting to watch you trying to get your head around kick saves …while I am trying to get my FireWire my brain and body to execute butterfly slides
Pulling off a “correct” kick save definitely isn’t easy! Makes me feel like I’m learning the position all over again. I’m sure it’s the same for you learning to butterfly slide
This is excellent!
Jim Park's - The Puck Stops Here
Lange still make very popular ski boots, especially for alpine racing. Think it’s pronounced Lang
I think you are the living proof that a very good goalie, equipped with vintage gear, CAN deliver a great performance in a serious league. I am 100% convinced of this. East Coast or lower I would assume.
I played with my old Koho 580 set and I was gassed with 13 or 14 year old Cowlinged Bauer skates. I thought I was going to die from exhaustion but I am almost 50 lol
Hahaha I feel the same way wearing this set. Except I’m only 35 so it’s good to know not much changes 😂 love the 580 set though. Always wanted to try them
I played ip until midget in those same Lange skates. I'm 49 now. When you wear vintage gear you have to play like it was the 1980s
Killed it bro?!! Haha reminded me some of we’re playing goalie before the butterfly was invented fully?!! Haha
Kids will never see the progression in gear we did let’s be honest comparing the position pre 2000s is a different game haha
Oh forrrrrrr sure. Totally different game. It’s a lot more robotic nowadays. Even the early 2000s was a different type of play
Hey man, do the lange's fit just like modern hockey skates? Typically hockey skates are 1 size and 1/2 smaller than regular shoes. Do the lange's go by that same metric? Thanks in advance
Good stuff for sure! One thing you forgot... A 70's goalie always "roughs up" his crease before playing. Do you young guys do that anymore? I used to take the snow and make little walls at the posts.
Haha we still do it! I pile my snow up at the posts too and then I “accidentally” sweep it out to the slot before shootouts
your'e impressed? Im impressed that you kept it as classically pure as you did. cheers!!
you're a brave man Bonesy. I still have my classic Lefebvre's from '96 hanging out in my parents' attic. I felt comfortable using them in 2010 after a 10 year hiatus because there was enough leg protection. but there's literally no leg protection on those pads! nuts! curious if you took any decent shots to your blocker or palm of the glove, and how that felt?
The blocker felt fine! But the glove definitely isn’t as protective as my modern glove. Plenty of stingers there
Is it a pain to drop into butterfly with old pads? How did guys like Roy and Potvin use to do it. I wonder what kinda gear hacks they had if any
Well technically you’re supposed to drop with the pad facing down in the old school style but I always wear knee guards for the added cushion. If I had to guess I’d say those guys wore something on their knees too but I can’t say for certain
we got vintage bauer konekts
You have no idea how easy modern goalies have it.
Oh I get it. I genuinely love going back to modern gear after playing in this stuff. No way I could do it full time
Great video! I love the skates, been looking for a pair myself (any leads would be appreciated!). Oh, and Lange is pronounced like flange. :)
Hahaha still no clue how to pronounce it. Thanks for the help there. But check out some vintage groups on Facebook!! I’ve seen a few floating around on there
THAT LOGO MAN!!!!
why are you NOT using vintage kneepads under the pads? LOL
Hahaha guess I should have said almost full vintage. Not quite as ballsy as Charles from Cooper goalie
@@BonesyTV I guet it, knees get pretty exposed in the vintage gear playing old school…it’s not wise to use vintage knee pads or non at all 👊🏻😎
*continues playing modern butterfly style* “oh yea now we’re getting old school”
Hahaha still trying to learn how to not drop to the butterfly. Full standup is hard!
@@BonesyTV as someone who played stand up over butterfly I completely agree! It’s hard to play old style in modern hockey. Keep up the great content man!
Thanks buddy! I just played a tournament this weekend in vintage gear and man was it tough. Some pretty solid stand up style saves but definitely accidentally mixed in a few butterfly saves 🤦♂️
Très cool! But you need to lose the helmet/cage and go back to the fiberglass face plate.
If you do a vintage hockey school, I volunteer the ---- out of myself to be the duster thats the player demo (please pick me)
@@BonesyTV lets goooooooo, actually contact me if you are going to
sooooo konect copied vintage skates. nice
Vintage instructional series is the coolest idea ever I reckon! Get a horseshoe mustache and a mullet and I bet we'll have as much fun watching it as you making it! 😁
Bahahaha I think I’ll have to do it just for the mustache and mullet
Please do it!!!
Yes
