Presentation Abstract:
Plastic has become a daily necessity since its invention. It is portable, durable, lightweight, and a “friend” of human civilization. However, its intrinsic ability to remain dormant to degrade and our inability to effectively manage its end-of-life causes the piling of perilous plastic debris. Although a complete plastic ban is difficult to envision or enact in every sector of its use, replacing it in food packages would be an excellent starting point for mitigating environmental damage and improving human health. To this end, cellulose is a valuable resource due to its biocompatibility and low toxicity. Specifically, cellulosic residues from agricultural products like switchgrass are promising, economical, and sustainable to formulate biodegradable films. Such a cost-effective and environmentally viable solution will benefit current and future generations, contribute to the circular bioeconomy, and offer a unique value-added proposition for the agriculture industry.
