British occupation, poverty, starvation, Civil war, unemployment, but the Irish are still there, an all over the globe, and in many cases enjoying unheard of prospeity. God bless the Irish.
Ever since my Little Mother told us this, "My mother is Irish. My father is Irish. And I am Irish, too." (Making it sound like she was "Irish stew, of course. And making her children smile.) I have had the feeling I must be Irish, too. Her birth record says her middle name was Ellender, though she always shortened it to Ellen. A few years ago, I discovered there is an Irish song "Sweet Ellender." I am still looking for that song so I can learn to play and sing it. My heart has always turned toward the Gaelic. I clung to the thought when I found I had an Ephraim Campbell in my ancestry. Then Celtic Thunder woke in me the emotional attachment that has always felt real. Now I am 83 plus years of age and the links grow stronger as I listen to more of the music and read Robert Burns poetry with such beauty in it. It's such a lovely dimension to my life. Thanks for this Music of Ireland!
