- This is a very rare Italian news clip from a performance of Otello with Giovanni Martinelli, Lawrence Tibbett and Maria Caniglia at the Metropolitan Opera in 1938. It was uploaded a long time ago by a user who has been deleted. This is the only video footage I have ever seen of any part of a performance from the Met before the 1950's. Unfortunately we don't really get to see any of the musical numbers, what a shame!
In the beginning one can see Lily Pons entering the opera house and towards the end of the clip the director Edward Johnson with the cast.
What a fascinating document! Thank you!
WONDERFUL ! Thank you for posting !
Just to listen to 1 Vocalise from MARIA CANIGLIA is ENOUGH to PROVE THAT SINGERS CANNOT SING TODAY.
that s what l thought exactly! :)
and by Tibbett too
There are two Met broadcast recordings from 1938, both with Martinelli/Tibett under Panizza, the first w/ Rethberg as Desdemon, the second one with Caniglia. The stage director was Herbert "Hans" Graf. There are two more in 1940 w/Rethberg, 1941 w/Roman again w/Martinelli/Tibett ...
yeah, this is great . i had seen it before on youtube, im glad its back. terrific.
Amazing.
I have a record of the complete Otello bij Martinelli, Tibett ....and Stella Roman. From december 4, 1941 from the Metropolitan. This interpreters were that evening able to build up an enormous tension. Listen to it, one would forget to breeze. There exist also an Otello with Martinelli, Tibett and Elisabeth Rethberg from februari 12, 1938. But in my opinion this version does not reach the tension of 1941.
But you must hear and judge for yourselve !

I'm pretty sure Lawrence Tibbett's English would have sounded as exotic to the Italians as the Italian narration sounds to us Americans.
Back when we had singers who could do justice to these parts.
Back when we had this thing called makeup, with which a Caucasian could portray a Moor.
I agree with your first statement. I can't condone blackface, however.
@@xxsaruman82xx87 Don't you make a distinction between minstrel-show blackface and dark makeup?
@@zriter59escritor33 it's not even a matter of racism. It was ridiculous, period.
Thank God we're abandoning it
@XxSaruman82xX Theatrical makeup to portray a character is NOT blackface any more than Al Jolson or a minstrel is Martinelli or Olivier. It's all about embodying and portraying a character and any actor or singer who succumbs to woke nonsense propaganda bs is no true artist and not to be taken seriously.
MrSkylark1, it proves that singers cannot pierce today, for which we are grateful. Today's singers have problems, but at least no one walks on stage producing those aggressive, piercing, often off pitch sounds Caniglia called singing after 1942.
