It was my 40th last year and my husband bought me a special perfume that will always remind me of my birthday. It doesnt need to costs loads just something different. I feel the same I’d rather have an experience than stuff
The best way to celebrate your 40th would be to have family and friends round, they could all bring a plate of food and a bottle of drink…tell them they need to help themselves to food and drink…less pressure for you to host….and you’re not spending money but still celebrating with the most important people in your life x
Thank you, I definitely agree with bring a bottle and a dish! We do that when hosting too. I’m not good with parties for myself but I do love having people to our home ✨✨
For your birthday, a special cake or dessert with candles is enough. A nice picnic or lunch on the patio would be good.

We did the P&O Fjords cruise for the second time this year. (First time 2016) we have also been to Venice earlier in the year too!

@LaraJoannaJarvis So beautiful. I would recommend kayaking and the skylift in Olden. It is quite a bit to fit in in the time you have there. We got off the ship as fast as we could to do the skylift then kayaked in the afternoon.
Stavanger is stunning. The white houses are a great for a photo shoot . This may sound odd but there is a Canning museum (old fish canning factory) which was surprisingly really interesting 😆
I think, as your job offers travel opportunities that sometimes include the family, then it makes perfect sense to cancel the holiday booking and save the money for something else. I think that you could perhaps pick up a nice souvenir in Venice as your birthday gift. Have a fabulous time in Norway - I have 2 tips - be sure to wear walking shoes or trainers when you are off the ship and also, if you have a window/balcony, sleep with the curtains open as you sail in early in the mornings and you really don't want to miss that!

When I cancelled a holiday with TUI several years ago, they made me still pay the full deposit... I'm not sure if things have changed and who you booked with etc x
I had a low key 40th birthday but then later in the year , when my close friends had all turned 40 too, we went on a girls / kid free long weekend to New York for the first time which was really special. Maybe tick something off the bucket list like that to do by yourself, with Stu or with yr girl friends if don't want a present ? Xx

Great video! Would love to hear the info on the shore tours for Norway and prices as I'd love to do a cruise there but worry about shore tours being too pricey. Also for your money chats would love to hear your views on investing 🙂
Thanks! I’ll be covering this off for you. I haven’t fully decided on all the excursions yet as I know some of the stops are just so beautiful for walking around and you don’t need to necessarily do a paid trip out which is helpful. I’ll share it all 👌🏼

Chris Carter writes the best psychological thriller books ever! He has quite a lot of books out so make sure you read them in order if you give them a go. I'm sure the 1st in the series is called The Crucifix Killer. I've just read his latest book Genesis. Absolutely brilliant. They can be very gory though 😂 just a warning. X

I've always enjoyed your videos, you've given me some useful tips regarding money. I'm not sure however how your recent travel content is slow living or frugal. I understand that the cruise is a job however most families only have 1 holiday a year so your multiple holidays confuse me.
For me a better 40th present would be to overpay the amount of the Venice trip off the mortgage.
Hi Gill, thanks for watching! I’m not sure how long you’ve been watching my videos but I actually started my channel 10 years ago and it was all about parenting and travel, as I said in the video, travel has always been our passion and we’ve sacrificed lots of things to be able to find it. I completely understand that travel is not something everyone can do, but my whole ethos is around saving on the little things to make the big things happen, and for us, that’s making memories travelling for the most part.
I’d like to think of it as inspiring for anyone trying to save for a trip that I offer the tips to do so. Obviously with this trip it’s a work trip but there will also be thousands of people who will watch those vlogs who don’t live frugally but are just here to see travel tips and information. So I try and strike a balance between the different kind of audiences I have gained over the past decade.
As I said in the video, a cruise is great value for money in terms of what you get, so that’s why I want to highlight it for anyone who is looking for something different to do for a holiday, and I hope that’s interesting for those whom choose to watch it.

Soggy paper straws in a plastic cup with a plastic lid, rather then a paper cup with paper lid and an actual straw so we can enjoy our drinks ..... doesn't make sense this less plastic thing 😢
