I am African American woman. Both my parents are from the South. My father listened to country music from as far back as I remember, including this song. Everytime I hear this song, I have a big smile on my face, but my heart hurts. I'm 62 years old. My life is pretty much in order, but every so often I see getting older. I look back and see my parents. Yeah, I always have a big, silly smile on my face when I hear old country music, but my heart always aches.
One of his best. This man could take something that seems small and weave it into words that can make you cry. There is a very honest message laced within this song. Pinto will ride forever in the hearts of ' the good guys and gals'. :)
I found this song last night. This song is great. One of the best country songs I've heard in several years. Tom is one of the greatest country musicians ever!
Tom is the best story teller on earth. This is a great song done well. I remember the Saturday morning picture shows where you could see a double feature, a cartoon or two, and a "serial" which ran week to week. All this and popcorn for a quarter. Kids nowadays have no idea what I'm talking about and it's a pity. They just play with those damnable cell phones and I phones and aren't even aware of what's going on around them.
"Oh we rode the dusty trails together, at the Saturday morning picture show". You have to be a certain age to relate to this line. There are no Saturday morning picture shows nowadays - only 24hr television and playstations, which can never be the same. Who can remember stumbling out of the cinema after a Saturday morning show, into the bright sunlight and waiting for your eyes to adjust to the brightness on the way home with your childhood friends?
Pinto the Wonder Horse was my great grandfather’s (California Joe)horse. He used to do tours in the 40’s and 50’s doing Wild West variety shows and Pinto was his trick horse
just like that with so many of his songs. they're short, poignant, often quite funny - and there's a thread in them all that makes me think longingly of childhood and the many people who've walked in and out of my life. Tom T. Hall is a very gifted man and I regard him as a real treasure.
@Dogote82 its more than a small crowd that can relate to this, i dont even really listen to country and i like this song. this song is not simply about a horse, its about its about childhood memories, and the loss of innocence associated with growing up.
Tom is a real talent then and now. Our kids and grand kids lack hero's that had values. I am not taking away from heros in the military or civil say our firemen and police.
it's from the album 100 CHILDREN that was available at one time on CD combined with another Tom T album called I WITNESS LIFE. i don't think they're still in print. they may be available as MP3's but I hadn't checked.

If you are an older man like me you can remember those Saturday movies with all those great "B" Westerns. This great song brings back those memories.

Takes me back to my boyhood, real memories
Great song and beautiful melody augmented by that wistful harmonica. Clippety -clop rhythm suggesting the canter. Tops and thanks, Mr Hall.
Now Tom's with Pinto R.I.P

Agreat song and it brings back many pleasant memories.
He sings about things he knew, and it was the same things that I knew.

I just like to hear his God-given voice of country Music Power. He is a genius.
