I wish you, and all other reviews about putting matts that I have seen, would include green speed of the matts. In my opinion the most useful practice and training goal is developing multiple distance targets. This is especially true for all these products that one can only work on straight putts. In real life it's slope, distance and green speed, right? You can practice all winter and think you know your speed for a 10 foot straight and level putt only to find that you are way short because the matt you practiced on was 15 stint and your green is a 10. It doesn't really matter what green speed your matt is -- you just have to know. Of course the closer speed your matt is to what green speeds are where you play, the easier the math. I actually own a Prime Putt and have a USGA stintmeter, so I know my winter training is on an 11 stint matt. I don't even have the cups in yet, because I'm just learning what length backswing and tempo combination results in consistent roll distances.
Oh, and another thing: this is my 2nd matt from Prime Putt. The speed on my first one was 15, and I asked Prime Putt whether they felt this was a reasonable speed. Their response was to immediately send me a replacement which actually just arrived today. They are sending me a UPS sticker to send the fast one back for them to figure out why it's out of spec. So, there's a little snippet of amazing "Customer Service"! I think they also have some sort of very long warranty. Lifetime? Not sure, and this is already too long for me to look it up plus I just heard "dinner's ready".

Thanks for the detailed analysis - have not found any other reviews that even come close to this one. Most seem close to being advertising. Please do an update video on durability for the birdie ball and whether the primeputt has gotten better (closer to birdie ball) with time. Would also be interested in your detailed analysis of puttr if you can get them to send you one.

I agree that I can’t remember putting on greens like the birdieball mat. I believe that is because it does not actually represent putting on a real green. I recently gave my birdieball mat to my uncle and ordered the prime putt.

Jonathan, any word on durability after a few months? I’m looking to replace a putting mat I currently use and am stuck between the birdie ball and the prime putt.

Jonathan, I see this video isn’t overly popular which is a shame. I own the First Black, you’d be surprised to know they rate the speed as 10 in the good putt, bad putt direction and 11.5 in the reverse direction. I bought the mat to improve my conversion rate inside 10 feet, unfortunately it actually make my putting worse. I didn’t quite understand why, until you pointed out your dislike for the good zone, bad zone and I twigged, previously I was a dead weight putter. While I didn’t convert my strokes gained quota from 10 feet, I almost never 3 putted. Since using the First matt my distance control has deteriorated and my 3 putt frequency increased, the nett result is 1 additional putt per round on average.
I’ve reverted my putting approach back to dead weight putting over the last few rounds any my putting stats have improved again, so this review has been very beneficial to me. The First matt is in the corner, along with the ever growing collection of training aids, that haven’t helped improve my game.

None of these matts are wide enough for me even with some being 4 ft wide. You’ve never seen me putt. I’m so bad, I even hit some putts fat. No not stubbing the putt but fat. In other words taking a divot behind the ball on the green. The Sam Putt Lab laser shows my putter blade set up 2 degrees open. I cut across the ball with my stroke and hit the toe more often than anywhere else. I’d be better off jumping on a pogo stick while putting the ball.
