That's why I don't like the International Criminal Court (ICC) and it's attempt to prosecute certain African leaders. Those leaders may have done wrong but I think there needs to be some other way of sorting things out. To be honest I think humankind needs to wipe the slate clean and have some kind of spiritual revolution.

The fate of the person who committed it (their sentence) is a separate matter. The hard won principles of Nuremburg should be re-engraved by the legal system, so as to give pause to politicians who think it's OK to defy future decisions of the United Nations. So yes, Tony Blair should stand trial. If he is found guilty, I don't think anything is served by his imprisonment--he's unlikely to reoffend.

This interview was significant. Jeremy has gone from being the " joke " candidate to the front runner and Emily was forced to conduct a very different and respectful interview as a result. Labour is and always has been a party for the working class. Currently we don't have a working class as we did before in this country due to de-industrialisation. Thus the only people labour are currently supporting are people on benefits. Yes there is still a working class but Labour does not support them (as we saw from there last time in power) and the conservative seem to be giving them more by raising the amount that people can earn before paying tax. The conservatives are also trying to help and incentivise people on benefits to get working again something that Labour did not do, in contrast Labour tried to keep the people on benefits where they were, as they made it better to be on benefits then in a full time job. They need to reform and bring in a new Labour, anyone who was part of the Blair regime has got to go!

smcg I own my own house. But the prices in London are too crazy now. House buying is over. Also developers cream off a huge amount. Shared ownership is the worse of both worlds. I know people around 30 on 50k and struggling. Also, the Housing bubble always bursts and kills the British economy somewhere down the line. So a mixed economy is a realistic opportunity for young people to get on.

When I was involved in politics (in an advisory capacity) to a regional level politician over 10 years ago , it was seen more as a vocational occupation and less of a career choice. I got involved purely with a passion to bring about change and I've got to tell you that even I feel rather despondent with our present systems of government. It was less about public perception imagery and more about political policy content back then. I coined the phrase "Capitalism with a conscience" (I've heard it used !) and often wish this mantra had been adopted by large corporations. I hope and pray for change.

I hate UK mainstream news! They're so manipulative and just completely one sided. E.g. Why was it when allegations came out about Mo Farah's coach Salvadore, the new kept banging on about him!? And Mo himself had not even been accused of anything, he had released his records and he was 100% clean, but all the news reporters just kept unfairly swooping on him! Thats BBC, C4 and Sky, they all just kept making the news about Mo Farah, trying to manipulate the public opinion to get people in the country to all start to think he was hiding something and was a drugs cheat. British news is very manipulative, THEY choose what us the most popular news story and they focus on that, and the problem is people hear about it enough times they start to believe it. Its like if you hear a catchy song at work enough times, it gets engrained in your head, regardless of if you like it or not. Thats how mainstream news and media work on a psychological level with the mass public.

This is the first interview I have felt doubt. I feel Jeremy needs to do 2 thing to assure his victory. 1. Make it clear that even the notion of the Tories voting for Corbyn was propaganda created by the tories terrified of what will happen if Jeremy wins Labour leader. He's already started a movement nothing is going to stop in the near future, and if he wins Labour leader there is no hiding his alternatives which couldn't be stopped going mainstream. This is a very real threat to the Thatcherite ideology they all hold so dear. I feel Jeremy needs to make that clear in an interview. 2. The one thing I liked about Andy was his charisma, he says things like "when im prime minister" etc, and it's inspiring for the people supporting him. The humility and everything is great, all his fans know that's who he is, but when asked directly about being prime minster you need to express your desire to hold that position, if for no other reason than to make politics a democracy again, taking it back from the elites. I'm as big of a fan of Jeremy as anyone, but a huge reason for that wasn't anything to do with him, but the things that he stood for. We can't afford to not have someone like Jeremy in a significant political position until after 2020, we just can't. He needs to win this, and he needs to inspire the people supporting him by showing us he wants to lead.
It's not about Corbyn. It's the ideas. He knows that, and when he wins this labour election he has five years to make this labour party what we want it to be. I personally don't think he will be there for the next election, but things will have changed immeasurably for the better.

Good interview. Would be even stronger if he had highlighted how policies will be determined more democratically by Labour members when pressed on how he would use the whip. I have to admit I would like to know what his approach on whip use will be and how he proposes to get the MP's to actually vote for what is decided by the party members.

Labour is and always has been a party for the working class. Currently we don't have a working class as we did before in this country due to de-industrialisation. Thus the only people labour are currently supporting are people on benefits. Yes there is still a working class but Labour does not support them (as we saw from there last time in power) and the conservative seem to be giving them more by raising the amount that people can earn before paying tax. The conservatives are also trying to help and incentivise people on benefits to get working again something that Labour did not do, in contrast Labour tried to keep the people on benefits where they were, as they made it better to be on benefits then in a full time job. They need to reform and bring in a new Labour, anyone who was part of the Blair regime has got to go!
James Brady I agree with you. Many English people get the feeling that Labour don't actually care about this country, that they actually hate it and everything that made it great. Their social experiments have left us more divided than ever (which was their aim) but they have failed to pick up the pieces, the people copped onto them. Its over for Labour, they just don't know it yet. It is mainly whingers, bitter idealists and communists who are excited about Corbyn. Now is the time for the Tories to crush Labour forever. They can do it with boundary changes and the introduction of proportional representation which would ensure Labour are neutered forever.

I like what he's saying about manufacturing, but eg. suppose we resurrected our shipbuilding industry. How does he propose to make it competitive compared to poor countries where they build ships cheaper than anyone else by paying their workers 1p an hour (not quite that but for the sake of argument) Any ideas anyone?

It has everything to do with the restrictions placed on councils to build and the right to buy. The same situation can be seen in east london albeit much more accelerated. More social housing and a rent cap will reduce costs.

smcg I own my own house. But the prices in London are too crazy now. House buying is over. Also developers cream off a huge amount. Shared ownership is the worse of both worlds. I know people around 30 on 50k and struggling.
Also, the Housing bubble always bursts and kills the British economy somewhere down the line. So a mixed economy is a realistic opportunity for young people to get on.

In fact they should be deeply worried, as a party led by Corbyn would be a true opposition to the austerity politics of the Conservatives. Challenging their policies on benefits, higher education, trident, public sector pay and much more. The Tories will find it a lot harder governing with a real opposition from the left!
They are unhappy and worried hence all the things they say regarding JC. By saying that he is the one they would like to see as the opposition leader they are saying he is weak and by doing that leading the labour supporters to not vote for him. He is in fact the one they are most worried about.

I like the caring/sharing values of the left, but I worry that they can sometimes be dogmatic and intolerant of dissent. The record on individual freedom, free speech and freedom of expression in countries that have called themselves "socialist" is not great (though I admit that many non-socialist countries have also fallen short on this).

Ed O'Meara Nothing in his particular speech (or even about him particularly). It's just that I'm a bit wary of what might be called the hard left (or true socialists) with regard to that issue. Don't get me wrong. I like the ideal of a just and caring society. I value both freedom AND socio-economic equality, but sometimes I'm not sure if it's possible to have both.
Ryan Fox Yes, it can be argued that Stalinist Russia, Maoist China and present-day North Korea were/are not truly socialist. After all, even Hitler called himself a socialist (albeit a national socialist). Some "socialist" countries seemed more relaxed than others (i.e. Cuba and Tito's Yugoslavia). I just worry that in order to have the kind of equality demanded by socialism, society would have to be very controlled.

When I was involved in politics (in an advisory capacity) to a regional level politician over 10 years ago , it was seen more as a vocational occupation and less of a career choice. I got involved purely with a passion to bring about change and I've got to tell you that even I feel rather despondent with our present systems of government. It was less about public perception imagery and more about political policy content back then. I coined the phrase "Capitalism with a conscience" (I've heard it used !) and often wish this mantra had been adopted by large corporations. I hope and pray for change.
Okay hes a bk-bencher but the thing I dont get about this is how come the news never mentioned anything about him upto over a yr ago, suddenely now he comes out the woodwork to win the leadership. I hate UK mainstream news! They're so manipulative and just completely one sided.
E.g. Why was it when allegations came out about Mo Farah's coach Salvadore, the new kept banging on about him!? And Mo himself had not even been accused of anything, he had released his records and he was 100% clean, but all the news reporters just kept unfairly swooping on him! Thats BBC, C4 and Sky, they all just kept making the news about Mo Farah, trying to manipulate the public opinion to get people in the country to all start to think he was hiding something and was a drugs cheat.
British news is very manipulative, THEY choose what us the most popular news story and they focus on that, and the problem is people hear about it enough times they start to believe it. Its like if you hear a catchy song at work enough times, it gets engrained in your head, regardless of if you like it or not. Thats how mainstream news and media work on a psychological level with the mass public.

This is the first interview I have felt doubt. I feel Jeremy needs to do 2 thing to assure his victory.
1. Make it clear that even the notion of the Tories voting for Corbyn was propaganda created by the tories terrified of what will happen if Jeremy wins Labour leader. He's already started a movement nothing is going to stop in the near future, and if he wins Labour leader there is no hiding his alternatives which couldn't be stopped going mainstream. This is a very real threat to the Thatcherite ideology they all hold so dear. I feel Jeremy needs to make that clear in an interview.
2. The one thing I liked about Andy was his charisma, he says things like "when im prime minister" etc, and it's inspiring for the people supporting him. The humility and everything is great, all his fans know that's who he is, but when asked directly about being prime minster you need to express your desire to hold that position, if for no other reason than to make politics a democracy again, taking it back from the elites. I'm as big of a fan of Jeremy as anyone, but a huge reason for that wasn't anything to do with him, but the things that he stood for. We can't afford to not have someone like Jeremy in a significant political position until after 2020, we just can't. He needs to win this, and he needs to inspire the people supporting him by showing us he wants to lead.
It's not about Corbyn. It's the ideas. He knows that, and when he wins this labour election he has five years to make this labour party what we want it to be. I personally don't think he will be there for the next election, but things will have changed immeasurably for the better.
At the heart of the problem is me. Only joking.

Emily Maitlis seems arrogant and manipulative. Just interview a person honestly; don't try to catch them out. Don't load a question such that whichever way a person answers you can press them against the wall with the follow-up.
What an embarrassing interviewer, with her focus on 'emotional' questions: Do you have ambition enough to become Prime Minister?" "What did it FEEL like to address these people?" Utter diversions from the real issues.
