Hey, kind of pro here, I have a few tips in case this will make you return to the game.
Composure is everything. Spamming out of panic is easily the worst thing you can do. No matter the circumstances, it's going to affect you negatively. (unless you plan on playing run) you might as well be pressing R with key spam.
In the vanilla game, your best bet is to have your pointer and middle fingers of your left hand on A and S, with your right hand's pointer and middle fingers on up and right on the arrow keys. This will take a load off your brain, because you can just hit the keys in the order the notes show up. It also divides the attention to each side of your brain. Also, switching between up and down doesn't become a hassle. It's necessary for some of the hardest mods out there, and also for Mother Induces Laser Focus.
If you want to keep it simple, try to color code the notes with keys. A strategy I've seen someone else do is to have a colored sticker on the keys that press that colored note. If you're like me and shoot for the stars with these crazy mods, it might be better to column code. Lots of mods like to change the color of the notes, or even just strip the color from them completely.
There are a few different types of note structure that people like to use that you'll need to practice. One in particular is called a Jack. It's 2 of the same note type happening consecutively very fast. You need to get used to seeing those types of things and double-hitting the key. It's necessary for things like the first ballistic, bushwhack, and thousands of mods out there. Another structure that comes to mind is Doubles. I personally still need work with doubles, but majority of the harder mods love to fill their songs with them. (Doubles are just 2 different key presses happening at the same time.)
Other than that, all I have to say is practice makes perfect. Perseverance and testing your limits is the key to becoming skilled at the game.

(BEFORE YALL SAY ANYTHING yes, i did get this from blue stop sign so check him out please support the man he went through alot to give this kind of info. But the corruption lore i did by myself, just to let you know. so yeah just a DISCLAIMER)
Tutorial: girlfriend teaches boyfriend or you in that matter how to play the game lets see if you got the skillz!
Alright week 1: now that you've learned how to play lets see if you can get through it can get your trust, with her ex-rockstar dad his songs are not that hard becuase he has retired from being a rockstar so thats why his songs are not that hard and are kinda easy well for most people.
Week 2: quite complicated and or complex so it goes like this so week 2 is supposed to go after you get the mom and dad's trust the mom and dad didnt have enough fun yet so they decided to invite boyfriend over and play around on him for a little when halloween comes around the girlfriend and boyfriend pass out candy to kids after they are done they head back but they see two kids in a costume they dont want candy though but the girlfriend, they were tricked by someone not so nice known as the lemon demon.
Alrighty week 3: after being absolutely humiliated by being beated from boyfriend the dad sends a merc (i think thats how you say it :/) to assassinate boyfriend but pico was only given a location not a person, pico went to the location and found someone he knew for a while the boyfriend instead of killing him he sings or raps with him.
Week 4: you took down the dad but can you take the mom? Its not easy though lets see if you can get approval from her, she has not retired and is a pop star instead of going on stage she buys limousines and battles on top of it, since she is a pop star her songs are not so easy, going light then going pulling out all the stops to take down boyfriend in the last song oh yeah you know what song im talking about.
Week 5: Christmas time! Girlfriend and boyfriend go too the mall to go see santa this could be something that they usually as they have chrismass outfits on, but santa was not the only person there someone else was there too it was the girlfriends parents and they are here to ruin boyfriends fun, poor santa is held at gunpoint and the dad sits on his throne and having the mom sit on his lap, this caused a huge commotion and everyone came to see what was happening, the first 2 songs have a Christmas theme to it the dad is maybe forcing everyone too be happy even though the situation is quite not Christmas like, after the first 2 songs everyone ran away from the mall the lemon demon strikes from where he was watching from the crowd causing the mall to be into a panic blood is on the walls and in the snow and on the tree are intestines, after being unsuccessful in week 2 he hopes that he will get a chance too eat them after the bribe didnt work, in the cutscene, you see a head on top of a tree phantom arcade was asked if it was the moms head was on the tree, but all he said was that it will make you smile..
Week 6: after all this time we hanged out with girlfriend and went up to her room she found a dating sim she really liked and wanted to play it with us but the dad put us into the game with many others who had the same outcome or fate they is why the last song says that they havent been with real humans for so long and that he will beat you and make you take his place, so that they can get revenge on the person who did that to them.
Thats about it but there's extra's the only two im doing is whitty and everywhere at the end of funk.

Whitty: whitty is a powerful being only 20% human maybe the other 80% is other living being's, whitty was created by a Domesday cult, the Domesday cult can recreate life if it were to die out or disappeared, whitty lives in a cartoony world where some people are humans and others are weird looking, this would be the FNF world, the Domesday cult wants whitty to destroy everything and leave no one behind but he doesn't want to do that, so he went into hiding in a alleyway, he rips a daddy dearest poster, his soul was taken by the dad so thats probably why he doesn't like him that much also whitty was a ex rock star,
Whitty knows who boyfriend and girlfriend is because of boyfriend beating the dad in his own, he doesnt want any trouble with boyfriend because it can risk the Domesday cult to find him, boyfriend doesn't care and starts the song anyway, whitty is getting irritated and annoyed at boyfriend after losing to him he starts the song this time and also loses. Whitty snaps pulling out all the stops to get rid of boyfriend his rage got to high up and started a mental breakdown he made alot of noise doing that and could risk the Domesday cult to find him but thats to late now he wants to get rid of him once and for all. Lets hope he doesn't get caught.
Everywhere at the end of funk: the boyfriend is suffering from dementia the girlfriend is just a blur and he doesn't remember anything he will try and fight it untill he wins he tries to recollect everything but doesn't succeed he will not stop untill he can collect everything back again.
Corruption: Lemon demon has spread a unknown virus well known as the corrupted virus it went to the girlfriend then went onto the boyfriend, lemon demon sent them over to the pump and game him the "unknown virus" (it didnt become known yet) or once again the corrupted virus they wanted pump to come over to the spooky house for "candy" once pump got there he was... Scared he didnt know what happend to pump and the others the next song it slowly got him a quarter of his face is corrupted and he was REALLY scared but kept on going.. Now his body is now corrupted and just like that the 2 spooky kids were corrupted they were hopeless and couldnt fight it... They move onto pico and battle him he wonders what is going on but does not question it. Half his face is corrupted and he tries to fight it but cant do it then moves onto the next song then his whole body is now corrupted and then you see that his animation changed he now points his gun up in the air (when the up arrow hits) and the left arrow he now points the gun to his head on the barrel of the gun there is now blood on it and fits into his head perfectly this means that he tried to shoot himself but didnt succeed as the corruption didnt let him do that and then he became corrupted. They ordered him to corrupt the mother as the boyfriend goes into hating stimulator with girlfriend to insert a virus into it and let it infect senpai as they watched. Pico then infected the henchmen and the mother and then the boyfriend and girlfriend move onto hating simulator (girlfriend's game) the virus became small in the game senpai was wondering why he looks like that and what happend to him after the next song the virus on boyfriend became bigger, senpai wanted to know what was going on but got no answers, boyfriend tries to delete senpai but fails due to senpai not letting him the same thing happens in the third song but instead of letting him leave he wanted to show what boyfriend had caused and wanted to kill him instead of leaving boyfriend in the game had became a full virus and after the last song boyfriend finally gets the permission to delete senpai and then went to the dad and tried to corrupt him but did but also didnt the dad tried really hard to take down him he lost his daughter his wife the person who he trusted took away everything he had so he is pulling all the stops to take him down in the first and second song he has a ability to reverse the corruption so he has more chances at survival than the others. So lets hope that he can take down the person he trusted and reverse the corruption on the fellow people he lost!

Think, you should use 2 hands! With one on A and S and the other on UP and RIGHT. It helps a lot with this kind of game. Also you're hitting the notes too early! This is why you "miss" them. Also also, watching the opponent's arrows helps you get the rithm and see tricky parts in advance, so you're more prepared when your turn comes.
