This is non-hydrophane type Welo opal. It’s mined wet and will typically craze upon drying out. I display mine in freshwater aquarium to preserve them well. Ethiopia also has great production of gem grade Hydrophane opals that don’t have this crazing (cracking) issue. Great video! Not much documentation is available on this non-hydrophane type opal. Very cool stuff! 😎🤙
The Planet Earth Birds Of Paradise part made my day. My favorite documentary. PACO PACO PACO! I'd love to give that to my mother. She takes care of my elderly grandfather and deserves something that beautiful. Cheers!
I too have been purchasing Ethiopian opal and have some stunners.......in stead of grinding the sand off with a wheel.......I use a small needle pick or my thumb nail. Just soak the opal in water and most of the surface sand just comes off in big chunks. That way you remove very little surface opal. Also the best color in Ethiopian opal is the the white surface layer in stead of deep in the rock. You can see this with most but not all specimens. Cheers
I am stunned by all this color and the skill to strip the sand and flaws from what ends up being a beautiful opal. My question is where do I go to get a ring for myself ? Most of these videos are fore women and men who love women enough to purchase opal jewelry for them. Would you consider a segment on men's opal rings or tie clasps or cuff links or ear rings ? Thank you for taking my question.
I heard from Justin, that if you see that translucent tan/brownish color in an opal (that isn't the ironstone of a boulder opal), it means that the the material is very weak, and WILL crack, 9 times out of 10. So, if there's that caramel colored potch/mineral, it's almost like it hasn't had enough time to strengthen itself under the pressure of the earth, and turn into healthy potch, which creates healthy opal. I hope this helps, because I LOVE your channel so much, and you make me genuinely happy. 😊❤
I love these! They’re so pretty! I don’t even care that some of them have cracks, they’re still so pretty! The cracks kinda give them some more character!

Hi Don, Paco is the so energizing (people should know about the cat's joy therapy ideal by those times) and does all Your pets are ginger just like the "Man on fire" opal? They definitely feel the groove lol. As a female I am totally seduced by this micro honeycomb pattern opal which knocked out my eyes on the floor. Happy to see You back, hope You are all well and that other cats don't treat the new "Paco on fire" too hard. Greetings from snowy Alsace mountains.
So I'm sure you've know, but that this type of Ethiopian opal is a specimen grade opal. It will almost always crack even just working it on the wheel. Then if you dont keep it in water it will craze like crazy, like the first piece in the video. Whatever your using to stabilize it tho seems to do an okay job at not killing the color. Was fun to watch, cause these are the opals I first started on. Brought back memories.

Awesome video, I was just looking at a couple pieces of rough opal I have had for at least 20 years and wondering if I dare try to grind and shape them since I very new to lapidary. I wasn’t sure if the pieces I have were of good quality , I’ve kept them in water all the time and change to fresh water periodically. But now seeing your opals I think I just may have a few nice pieces so I’m going to give it a try and make nice cabs. Thanks again for the great video! Oh and PACO!
I love etiopian crystal opal - especially clear transparent ones, without any mist, water clear; and when it haven't enough colors to fill the background and you can look through it like trough glass - ohh I love it.
I love all colorful Opals, and I remember paying over $100 for a pair of tiny little black opal's set in gold when I graduated high school. I lost them while attending college planned on replacing them and forgot about it. Now it's impossible to replace them even using my own gold the cost of black opals is so high... Haha I love Paco kittens are so fun.
I severed my ACL & meniscus about a month ago in a dumb accident, and since then haven't been able to do much at all. Now I didn't mind the time off but this also meant I couldn't get around to finding this years Christmas presents. So since the area of Germany I'm in is going into a real strict lockdown, I cant go to my local crystal and jewellery shop to get the supplies for emergency presents. I enjoy your videos and seeing the beautiful opals. When I slowed down the replay to watch the kitten chase the jingling toy, I believe I heard him say, "Yo quiero Paco bell!"
Paco is a keeper as is that opal. I have had the same issue with Ethiopian opals too. Tried that evil Cyanoacrylic glue. Wishing you success, John Watkins
Well today is “Paco” Tuesday I’m a day late n a buck chort, but hey at least Iz able to enjoy this incredibly entertaining and inspiring video “whom ever works with their hands is a laborer, those who works with their hands and their mind is a craftsman , those who put their heart in to it is an artist 👩🎨 “
I think the opals cracked because of the heat coming from the grinder. If the opal acts like glass, normally glass cracks when there is a lot of internal stress. Technically grinding it down you change the shape and outer layer is heated from the traction. If you can find a way to heat the gem and then slowly cool so it adapts to a new shape it may lower the stress and prevent cracking. I am not an expert and I don't know if this is right but that's what some other scientific videos have pointed out when making glass, if it cools down too quickly it will crack after some time. I know this is an old video but I would love to be in a giveaway
Paco how did I miss this?? I hope I'm not to late for the drawing. Those were some beauties you had there. Has anyone found a way to stop it from cracking Enjoyed the video and I gave it a Thumbs Up
I just bought at an auction the sanding machine similar to yours. What is the best stone to practice on. I live in Kansas and I have never found pretty rocks
you probably know by now, since this is an old video, but you are trying to get opal that is supposed to always stay in water, to prevent cracking, to not crack out of water. Its meant to be displayed submerged in water. The etheopian opal that you purchase dry (always check to see how long they have been curing for, as some sellers do not let them cure for months like they are supposed to) will not crack if you chose the piece well, and slowly worked it to avoid large temperature changes. (also check the temp of your water you are using, too cold and it can crack while grinding/polishing, too hot and it wont keep the heat down in the sections you are working and the heat differential will crack the opal.) also work the stone a little bit on all sides if you can, so you keep the temperature relatively consistent across the piece. Also...don't leave sand pits in an opal you just worked with water, the sand will act as a pick/wedge, and cause a fissure from that point.
Thank you for the eye knickers! I’d love to see more of frisky PACO. Can you share your source for those Ethiopian opals in case mere mortals want to try their hand at opalmancy?
apart from winning your giveaway, just saying I love your sense of humour, your talent in getting the beauty out of the opal is wow wow wow cannot spell phenonamal!
I have a question. Opal rough contains sand, and that sand can cost you carat weight when you are forced to clean it up. Can a person use an ultrasonic cleaner to help clear that sand out ? Will the ultrasonic cleaner break it up and clear it out or no ? I’ve been wondering that for about 2 weeks now and since I do not have in my possession any rough Opal or an ultrasonic cleaner I am unable to perform a test to see any results for myself.
Put the opals in methanol and rinse them after some time with fresh methanol to flush out all the water. Repeat multiple times if necessary. Finish up with placing the Opal in slow curing and low viscosity epoxy. Maybe a vacuum chamber or a pressure pot or a combination of both might help. Edit: Was told I should give the new guy “PACO“ a shout out 👍
@@PulitzerOpal HAHA now I see why they call YOU the professional! Clever trick of you to use the same substance you thin your epoxy with! As far I I know, acetone should not hurt the hydrated silica. I just use an epoxy that is low viscosity on its own. I’m not sure, but I fear that the epoxy itself might crack while the thinner evaporates. But if you’re getting good results with it that’s awesome! And thanks for the kind words :)

So since the area of Germany I'm in is going into a real strict lockdown, I cant go to my local crystal and jewellery shop to get the supplies for emergency presents.
The man on fire would go towards an absolutely amazing pendant necklace for my deserving and hard working mother.
may the PACO be with you.
@@PulitzerOpal a shame to hear about your wife... If it's only a small tear she should be back up on her feet without much to worry about in less than a month.. apposed to a full rupture you can get through without needing surgery, which is nice.
Germans can be strange like that.. it's taken me a while to get used to them.
@@PulitzerOpal fantastic news! I'm doing much better too.
Looking forward to a brighter 2021
The Man on Fire looks pretty nice! Paco rules! Thanks for the videos.
These videos are going to eventually drive me to find a suitable location to mine opal and pay dearly to mine some for myself. Genuinely mesmerizing, I'm talking about PACO btw. Keep the vids coming, I'm addicted and I can't quit.
PACO. This is my first time to see your video and I am at awe with how you worked with the opals. Man on Fire seems a very apt name.
Opal is one of my favorites, and my daughter’s birthstone. They are all beautiful, even the cracked ones. Love the videos, thanks for sharing!
I never get tired of watching you fondling opal. And I always get an education. They are gorgeous pieces, even the cracked ones. 😉❤️
Paco! That honeycomb pattern was beautiful!
I not only love your opals..I love your presentation and I love PACO 🎁🙏
Paco! And it was so cute seeing your dog and Paco playing together! I am hoping to learn how to become a lapidary, and I adore opals. I hope you have a great day!
@@PulitzerOpal I plan on it! My fiance is working on hand sanding an Ethiopian opal I bought for him on Etsy. If you've got time, what steps did you take to become a lapidary? Have you been to GIA?
I loved #2!!!! That was for sure my favorite. I love these videos so much hahaaha
I enjoy your videos and seeing the beautiful opals. When I slowed down the replay to watch the kitten chase the jingling toy, I believe I heard him say, "Yo quiero Paco bell!"
You shall call him Paco and we shall all want Paco, Man on fire!
Awesome vid and beautiful craftsmanship...even in their beautiful cracks!!!
Gotta love getting to this channel early before he blows up big! We should celebrate with some Paco s!
PACO
also I love your videos I've been watching you for a few months and you are the most entertaining opal cutter on UA-cam
PACO
Thanks for all the fascinating Opals you share with us. All the best from Germany, Maximilian.
hi can i have a link where you bought these opals thank you.
Paco how did I miss this?? I hope I'm not to late for the drawing. Those were some beauties you had there. Has anyone found a way to stop it from cracking
Enjoyed the video and I gave it a Thumbs Up
@@PulitzerOpal That's sad as it's so beautiful if it wouldn't
Oh Paco! Your humor always gets me, I think sheila would like Paco to go to me! She told me so herself! ♡ from Michigan and Florida
Paco looks like a lot of fun. Great video, thanks.
Have you looked into some of the elements some jewelers use to stabilize non-natural turquoise?
Wow that opal at lithe end is absolutely beautiful! And PACO is the word
I just bought at an auction the sanding machine similar to yours. What is the best stone to practice on. I live in Kansas and I have never found pretty rocks
Paco
That was thoroughly entertaining! I will have to look up where the cracks come from.
you probably know by now, since this is an old video, but you are trying to get opal that is supposed to always stay in water, to prevent cracking, to not crack out of water.
Beautiful gems, especially "PACO" Cheers thanks for the opportunity :)
Well it is “Paco Tuesday”. Keep up the good work!
Why are the cracks showing up? Is this what happens when they are kept in water?
How i can buy some of the pieces of opal that you dont use thanks and sorry to bother you love youre videos
Paco! You are always entertaining and informative. Thanks
Hey Paco, you have some really beautiful opals. Love your videos, keep up the awesome content!
Paco what an awesome word of the day!
PACO.... great vid once again! All the way from the UK 🇬🇧 👌🏻👍🏻😀
Wonder if those would be knappable or if the paco messed it up.
What a great peice. I tend to like flawed pieces. What color
Love it! ✔️what a strange character. You and that cracking stone! 💐Carry on with your experiments, Paco 🖖👋👋
Have you tried a UV resin coating to seal off the opal once it's polished? Nothing gets in, nothing gets out and it's crystal clear.
PACO.
Dear Pulitzer Opal, how do I show my rough opal I acquired 40 years ago that I suspect came from Coober Pedy & Lightning Ridge? These were gifted to me in the early 80's
What kind of paper towel were you writing on in the outtakes???
Paco : Thanks for the video, I always wonder if the welo cracks more when polished/cut with water and the surface tightens while it is drying.
Oh my gosh Paco da crackle how do you prevent the cracks? ?? What is some extra curing techniques with Ethiopian opal
