For those, who doesnt understand German, i found this Translation: Far in the Champagne in midsummer green there where poppy flowers bloom between grave crosses there the grasses whisper and shake themselves effortlessly in the wind, which gently sweeps over the graveyard At your cross I find dead soldier, not your name, only numbers and someone has painted the number 1916, and you were not even 19 years old. Yes, they have also already deceived you similarly just as they do with us still today, and you have given them everything : your strength, your youth, your life. Have you dead soldier, once loved a girl? Surely not, because only here, where there is peace, could tenderness and trust flourish, were a soldier, about to die, not be too young. Perhaps you thought to yourself, I will fall soon, I will take my pleasure, as it comes, with force. To this end you were determined, you have however then been ashamed of yourself and never did it. Soldier, did you go believing and gladly to your death? or have you too doubtfully, bitterly, roughly not recognized your true enemy until the end? I hope it hit you a clean shot? Or has a bullet torn your limbs to pieces, have you cried out to your mother until the last, have you on your leg stumps run further, and your grave, does it hold more than a leg, a hand? There remained only the cross as the single trace/proof of your life, but hear my oath, to fight for peace and to be vigilant: If mankind once again falls for lies here then it can come to pass, that soon no one lives anymore, no one, who will bury the billions of dead However I find more and more people willing, to prevent this battle, it's high time. lyricstranslate.com

I have always tears in my eyes when I hear this song. I've got two sons and I pray that they never never never are forced to fight into a war. I don't want them to die for the profit of the great companies and the mighty. And I don't want them to kill other young people.. for nothing. Everybody has only thin one short life. All wars on this world have to come to an end
The original song is in English: The Green Fields of France (No man's land) and for me it is the best example of how different Germans think and talk about war. In English they worry about that the soldier, a hero, doesn't have a real funeral or can not be remembered in honor. In Germany they tell the truth about war. It's brutal. Germans even talk about rape. Because soldiers are put in an inhumane situation, nobody can cope with. You have to be detached and you are forced to do the inexcusable: kill other people's sons and daughters, husband's and children.
@Mud dy Wombat I think it has different titles. It is also about a young soldier who died in France. English: well i hope you died quick and i hope you died clean oh willy mcbride, was is it slow and obscene German (translated): I hope you got a clean shot. Or did a bullet tear your limbs apart, Did you scream for your mother till the end? Did you run on your stumps? And your grave, does it hold more than a leg, a hand. English: and did you leave a wife or a sweetheart behind in some loyal heart is your memory enshrined and though you died back in 1916 to that loyal heart you're forever nineteen German (translated): Have you ever loved a girl, a dead soldier? Certainly not, because only where there is peace, Can tenderness and trust flourish, You were a soldier to die, not to be young. Perhaps you thought I'd fall soon, Take my pleasure as it comes by force. You were determined to do so, but then you were ashamed and yet never did. I'm from the German speaking part of Europe, but not German. When they speak about war it's never poetic or romantic. It's never about honor or heroes. It's always hard and real. I kind of like it.
Reinhard Mey and Hannes Wader are really a dream combination, I love when they sing each other's songs and their musical styles and voices mix so well too.
A short scroll didn't show me any comments to that effect, so, I just want to say that Hannes Wader made the text after the original song (same melody) from Scotch/Australian singer Eric Bogle, called "no man's land" or oftentimes called "green fields of france". Doesn't make the song worse or anything - just should be known! The audience is clapping, btw, mostly because this is a classic which Reinhard Mey and Hannes Wader, sometimes even with Constantin Wecker sung together already in the 1960s! It is one of the great Hymns of the German Pacifist Movement.
They are still with us. Three songwriters that have been singing again war, racism and corruption for over 50 years. They never gave up. Even if their singing voices are not what they were - the message is still powerful.

Thank you Mr Shae for bringing these old songs (performed by three of the best German language singers/songwriters) back to my mind. Now where are songs like that these days, when we would need them most? You see how big the stage was they performed on? People would LISTEN to them. Now we have a war at our back door and everyone behaves like it's in a far-off country and doesn't seem to care. Where are the protest singers? We need them. Talking is futile, the words are soon gone with the wind, but music touches your heart. oh, and one small remark: the Mey in Reinhard Mey is pronounced like "my" in English, just like the month of Mai in German. Names are tricky because they sometimes have ancient origins and kept the old spelling. Even as a native, when I only knew the written name, I sometimes have to ask.
Three legends of the german music scene....united and with one gaol and message: Be aware when they start lying to us again- and yes it´s true...they lie to us every day and with almost every word!
Love that you realised, that it sounds like green feelds of france. "Es ist an der Zeit" actually is a german version of the song "green fields of france". There is also a version in the language of northern germany (lower german/plattdeutsch) which is called "suldat janssen" which is written like a dialogue with the dead soldier. All three are songs which are a monument for peace.
A similar contemporary song about the same era is "Der Graben" (Ernst Busch). And some hints, how people can avoid wars like that, are "hidden" in the Song "Le Deserteur", which can be found as a performance of Hannes Wader.
I also recommend the french song Le Deserteur (one version I love is by Esther and Abi Ofarim), it reminds me very much of this song - they’re both incredibly important and beautiful songs.
This song is a german interpretation of "green fields of france", which is pondering the last moments of the young soldiers, that died in one of the most gruesome bloodiest front lines of WW1. Almost a million men died in this battle that lasted for almost a year, most of them were under the age of 20. Those few that survived were so heavily traumatised, that it led to the first time reckognition of PTBS being an illness, and research treating it. Though they called it "shell shocked" back then.
The normal humans around the world want a peaceful life but the warlords and the politic want money. So we must stand up against the warlords and politic puppets (on the string) ...
If only everyone would understand the song completely. It's about time, that NOT ONE SINGLE man or woman will be a soldier. No soldiers, no war. But no, it's the ongoing lie to "fight for freedom" and this is a contradiction in itself! I grew up with Reinhard Mey's music and his songs had a huge impact on me. Special his songs about children helped me, to raise my sons for their best. And I told them very early, that they never ever will be soldiers and explained why. Nein, meine Soehne geb' ich nicht -- that's what Reinhard sang and I followed that, with my whole heart.

Though written in the eighties you can find elements in US politics that make this song ever more relevant in every decade since...
You missed one very important part of the song in your translation. After they sing about that he hopefully was killed by a clean shot and did not have to suffer. And then they sing: Or did a bullet shred your limbs?....... Or did you keep running on your stumps? The thought of that is mindblowing!

no one, who will bury the billions of dead
However I find more and more people willing,
to prevent this battle, it's high time.
