- We took our boat Oslo off the mooring for the first time, it was our VERY first time ever motoring and this happened....
Thanks everyone who watched our first video, we were surprised at how many views it got! The support is greatly appreciated, thanks so much!
Special thanks to Coastguard NZ Dunedin branch!
You might have done this but it wasn't in the video, but it often a good idea to run a motor that hasn't seen a lot of use for maybe half an hour at the mooring before leaving. It won't tell you everything since you'll be running in neutral, but it's a way of checking out the things like fuel supply or cooling issues that are pretty common with an old motor that hasn't be run for a while or which do don't have an extensive history for. Deborah Bay to Back Beach is probably a pretty good trip for this learning experience to occur on, and don't forget that the only mistakes you should truly regret are the ones you don't learn something from.😛
I'm not sure what sailing/fishing wet weather gear is called in NZ, but in Ireland (and the UK) we call them oilskins, oilies, or foulies (foul weather gear). Great job the both of you, stayed very calm and got yourselves out of your first situation!
Thank you!!! We spent about two weeks planning for every eventuality before setting off. The scariest part has been the not knowing what we don’t know, so having prepared enough to deal with this gave us a bit of a confidence boost 😊. Also I really like ‘foulies’, I think we’ll go with that.
May your obvious good luck always supplement your excellent planning! I love watching people learn but I suspect there is more to you two 'sailors' than you let on. You have set up a workshop to care for Oslo and you can give me the Latin names of all the wildlife. I especially love the Black Backed Gal! Kia Kaha!
Haha yeah you’re right there is 😁We’re hoping to show off the workshop a bit in future videos and also have some natural history videos in the works 😊
Loving the videos! Please keep them coming. Would like to know how you came about getting a suitable mooring at back beach? curios local 😊
Thanks glad you’re enjoying them! We were put in touch with the wonderful Kevin Waters of Moorings Otago and he sorted us out pretty quickly!
Love the Oslo Saga you two. Yay for the coastguard!
Thank you! Got to film a new one now
Yall little laughs in unison give me Beavis and butthead vibes😂
This is Beavis and butthead on estrogen
I think you practiced good seamanship by dropping the anchor right away.
Do either of you know how to sail?
Thank you! And no we don’t! We did think of having a go at putting the jib out but decided against it. With having the coastguard membership it made more sense to stay put and wait to be rescued.
@@oslosaga It’s not super hard. Trying to hitch a ride with some experienced people, is always a good idea. Recommended to bring beer ;)
Wow, what an ordeal. So, did the engine re-start?
It didn’t when we tried it again once we were on the mooring. But we did figure out what went wrong! We’re going to talk about that in the next video 😊
You could have rowed! One either side, as long as the wind wasn’t bad! Also when you are uncertain of the depth of water, leave at low water. If you go aground the tide will lift you off!
Don't chain's the name of the boat it is bad luck
