Have you been looking at my search history on UA-cam??? Because I've been searching for videos on composting and videos that compare the different types of composting....this video you made has come at the perfect time!! It's like you made this video just for me! (:
Nice to see you start composting. Your 3 bin system seems a little undersized for the size of your property but is a very good start. I noticed your leaves are not shredded. I find shredded leaves break down much quicker. When there are big dumps of leaves in the fall I think it is easier to mulch mow on the first pass and bag the second pass with the lawn mower. You end up with a smaller volume of easy to compost material and the lawn is mowed. It doesn't take any more time than racking IMO. Geoff Lawton just put out a 45 minute video on soil building and composting that is also an excellent intro to composting.
I love the worm tower! I have always wanted something like that in my garden but never knew there was a kit. I have seen DIY ones here on UA-cam but this one looks so nice! Great vid!
Love all your videos its 12.11am here in Australia i have your video's set on a bell notification and im sitting here watching it instead of sleeping keep the videos coming absolutely love them all
Glad to see another Aussie on here. This is my go to morning routine. Love Laura's videos she has inspired me to greater gardening. Even my family has noticed a difference in the garden when they come to visit. Thanks Laura.
Thank you for doing a video on the different types of composting. We want to start doing this correctly. Right now, my husband just has a pile of grass & kitchen scraps in the backyard. He hasn't been turning it very much if at all. Ugh! I also LOVE the cat photobombing the video! Hahahahaha! Thank you for sharing these videos! 🌞💕🐈😄💞
My alert chimed so I had to watch your latest upload. SO happy to see your new fur baby 🐱 Congrats on your new addition before The Addition in January👶🏻
Love this video and YES, I'm getting the worm farm composter... oh yes I am. This is the easiest....love Gardener's Supply, purchased several items in the past and needed this.. thank you Laura !!!! Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family !!!
Where I live in Canada the city collects compostable materials weekly and processes them into compost. This includes household kitchen waste as well as ‘green residues’ such as leaves, weeds, and plants. It’s always shocking to me when I hear that there are places in North America that still throw these things in the trash for no reason! Composting when you live in an urban environment is tough, but I suppose those worm things could do the trick.
For answers to the technical questions, the local library will probably have several books about composting. Our county library has all sorts of books about gardening, composting, keeping chickens, and much more!
I noticed on a previous video that Aaron has been driving over your leaves with the lawnmower to pick them up. Shredded leaves put into a composter make amazing compost on their own for seedlings and plants that don't need huge amounts of nutrients. It's also great for mulching around trees (the most natural mulch for them right?) I use letters (usually utility bills lol) and cardboard mainly for my 'brown' layer and keep the leaves for leaf mould compost :-)
I think she does use those shredded leaves for mulch. And I think the leaves she used in this video were pretty much for demonstration purposes--like the vegetable "scraps" for the first bin.
It's so funny you posted this. I've been working on blog content around composting, and I've noticed other gardeners devoting some time to this topic as well. Great minds and all that. :-) Wonderful video as always!
Great video! Starbucks has bags of free coffee grounds (nitrogen). You are more likely to find them if you go earlier in the day. Ask if you don't see any and they will give you all they have. No purchase necessary. Coffee grounds keep my compost bin cooking and my banana trees happy. :-)
For the worm compost is it just any worms (like can you just dig up some worms outside) or is it somehow specific? And also how many worms would you need?
Hi Laura, how did your water supply to plant room project go? Also will you keep your worm tower in the kitchen permanently or was that just for the video? Lizzie xx
Interesting I just put my kitchen scraps in a white bucket bore a few holes in it an just cover it up add a little water I don’t see any worms it don’t smell bad and I just start using it now
Your little kitty is sooooo cute! distracted me towards the end of your video. Those first two composters are very interesting(I only knew of the third method). Do you know if they can be found/bought here in Europe too?
Our household produces a small waist can full of food scraps every single week I wonder what size of bin I would need? Especially out in the northern land where the winters last 6 months sometimes more where it's very cold out and moist all the time. I don't think I want to do this indoors at all. Any wise suggestions, I have gardens plans out back.
Question about the first composter, I noticed you had yours indoors... I also live in a area where our winters are very cold, would you recommend keeping it indoors, or would it survive outdoors?
I would LOVE to know the answer to this question too! I just started my warm bin this year. I would like to keep them inside but had to put them in the garage caz it attracts many fruitflies. The tmeperature where I live would drop to around 0 - (-10) degrees celsius (32 -14 degrees F) ih the winter. It has been around 4 degrees C (39 degrees F) recently. The warms seem fine now. But I've noticed that some would like te escape the bin which didn't happen when it was above 15 degrees C (59 F). I am not sure but I am guessing it's due to the dropping from the tempature.
Oh Laura, #1 is exactly what I’ve been looking for. It’s perfect for me to handle. The reviews reflect a difficult time keeping the worms in the bin, any suggestion? Thank you so much for the video, it came at just the right time. Hope all is well. Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family.
There can be a few things happening in the bin to cause the worms to flee. Worms can suffocate if the paper is too wet or compacted. If that's the case, remove part of the bedding and replace it with fresh, dry material like shredded paper, leaves or coir. If there is alot of undigested food in there, they may be getting too many kitchen scraps. If you're producing more vegetable waste than they can handle, you can store some of it in the freezer or have an outside compost pile going as well if that is an option.
What about the amount of sun/heat that composting needs? I don't really have an area that gets constant sun and I haven't had much success with the tumbler.
Anita: me too. I have watched videos and bought books or rented at library on compost piles AND I watched my dad growing up who is a pro at making black gold! I am still a ninny at making it properly though. I feel like currently I didn't have enough sun, so I've moved it a little. I haven't given up! I also love Alys Fowler's advice on composting as well as this video here. Good luck.
Epsoma sells Heat it Up Compost Starter. That really did give a kick start to the heat in my bin, which is a turning one similar to what she showed. It is a small bag and is enough for 3 batches. My compost sat around for 4 months and is in the sun. Was beautiful, however I should crush the egg shells more as they are in my garden beds which are are planted with lettuce, radish and spinach at the moment.
Not unless you live in a really mild climate. All the details, including temperature requirements, can be found here: www.gardeners.com/how-to/worm-composting/5714.html
That was a very informative video. I think I'd prefer the outdoor ones. Russell, once again you stole the show little stinker! You are such a cutie!!!!! Have a Happy Thanksgiving Laura, bless you and your family. :) Anna
Do you have any relation to the H.J. Andrews Experimental Forest at Oregon State? Just came across it during thesis research and thought the name & state & nature combination reminded me of something ;)
Wondering who were the winners of the give-aways just over a week ago? Busy getting ready for the holidays and haven't been able to find the answer...anyone know?
Could you do a video on citrus tree care? I saw your video on your indoor garden room and noticed you had a few citrus trees. My little guy is doing terribly and I just don't know what he wants :(
I can tell you what a local nursery told me. I have an orange tree in a container and a lemon planted in ground. March thru Oct. @ 6 wk intervals, give Citrus/Avocado Food per inst. on bag. Oct. thru Jan. give Ultra Bloom food 0-10-0 per inst. on bag. These months are monthly feedings. Feb, May and August give FST Iron & Sulfur. If plants are blooming give 1/2 the rate of inst. on the package.
I've been looking at composters for a while. I loved seeing them compared and explained so well. Thanks!!

I love the worm tower! I have always wanted something like that in my garden but never knew there was a kit. I have seen DIY ones here on UA-cam but this one looks so nice! Great vid!

Thank you for doing a video on the different types of composting. We want to start doing this correctly. Right now, my husband just has a pile of grass & kitchen scraps in the backyard. I watched a video of a UK gardener who cooked a briskett in his compost! Pretty cool source of heat.
sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo happy to see the cat running around! made my day HAHAHAHAHHAHA

Love your videos! I´m trying Bokashi composting right now for my kitchen scraps and I really like how that works.

do they give the composted material back to you?
Love the 1st vermicompost er. Soo modern & elegant
Love your explanation and content. Very high quality, informative and useful.
For answers to the technical questions, the local library will probably have several books about composting. Our county library has all sorts of books about gardening, composting, keeping chickens, and much more!
Thanks. I've been wanting to compost. I really enjoyed this I was clueless on composting.Thank you
Thanks for this video! I've been waiting to see how you manage your garden/kitchen waste :D I can't wait to see the compost
Love that worm farm. Thanks Laura.
Can you also make a video of what the compost looks like after the process is done and how to use it?
We plan on it! :)
I vermi compost and love it. I also live in 424 square feet condo with only 100 square feet of concrete outside as my garden.
Very cool this was just what I was looking for. Thank you
Please give us an update on these in a few weeks! I'd love to see how to take care of a mature compost pile.

You want a certain type of worms easier to order them or buy them near you
Hi Laura, how did your water supply to plant room project go? Also will you keep your worm tower in the kitchen permanently or was that just for the video? Lizzie xx
Yeahhhh! I've been waiting for this. Thank you, thank you! The problem now is the decision, lol.
such quality content here, thank you for making this! =D
Interesting I just put my kitchen scraps in a white bucket bore a few holes in it an just cover it up add a little water I don’t see any worms it don’t smell bad and I just start using it now

So informational!
Awesome info I compost right in my garden I have a spot in the middle that I’ll dig and turn is that ok?
Yay! A new video!
Your little kitty is sooooo cute! distracted me towards the end of your video. Those first two composters are very interesting(I only knew of the third method). Do you know if they can be found/bought here in Europe too?
The worm composter was actually developed in the Czech republic, so yes!
www.urbalive.com/vermicomposter
I liked the idea of the sponsor helping to answer questions!
Tks !
Thant is great! Thanks for the reply.
Hi,l have searched the net for compost information and wished that you havd a video about it thanks for sahring it now.
with the compost bags do you have to dump out your scraps that are in it into your compost or can you throw the whole bag in?
Where did u get the copper stainless kitchen scrapes container? Love all the composting ideas. Decisions decisions decisions!
It's linked up above, but here it is again: goo.gl/vME6x8
With the last method, wouldn't the finished compost fall out and generally make a big mess?
I love making my own compost, my compost bin has thousands of worms!!!
Our household produces a small waist can full of food scraps every single week I wonder what size of bin I would need? Especially out in the northern land where the winters last 6 months sometimes more where it's very cold out and moist all the time. I don't think I want to do this indoors at all. Thank you so much it's been very useful for beginner like me :)
So good thanks.

What do you do with old pot fillings full of dirt and roots? Don't they make really good compost? How do you do those?
What about the amount of sun/heat that composting needs? I don't really have an area that gets constant sun and I haven't had much success with the tumbler.

interesting. Russell is growing
Thanks 😊
Laura I'd like to try the worm method...but what about the smell? Can you really put it inside the house or does it smell?
It does not smell. But you have to be careful not to put too much food in it so the worms can eat it all up.
Can we have an update of the worm compost? And does it have to stay indoor?
No, it does not have to stay indoor. But you have to keep it safe from very hot and cold temperatures.
Oh neat that is neat I want to do that.
can you keep the worm composter outside?
Not unless you live in a really mild climate. All the details, including temperature requirements, can be found here: www.gardeners.com/how-to/worm-composting/5714.html
Thank you so much Laura - I live in Southern California so might be able to. Thanks again for the awesome video
That was a very informative video. I think I'd prefer the outdoor ones. Russell, once again you stole the show little stinker! You are such a cutie!!!!! Have a Happy Thanksgiving Laura, bless you and your family. :) Anna
The outdoor composter did not have soil? 3 shovels would be a great start,.!?
This is cool 👍👍
nice info btw. thanks!
I noticed chicken scraps were only added to the worm compost. Does that mean they should not go in the Tumbler composter
Excellent
Does your worm bin use red wiggles?
That worm composting bin is beautiful.
Yep, Red Wrigglers (Eisenia foetida) :)
Is there a smaller version of the worm farm? For an apartment it looks huge.
I love the idea of composting... but worm juice!! 😬😬😬 I will have to think about this!! Happy Thanksgiving!!
Haha! Worm juice is the BEST! :)
I can't handle worms. So, does the second method has anything to do with worms? If not, I would love to try that method.
Thanks!!!!!

Hello Mam, what is ratio of carbon and nitrogen and can I use sawdust as a source of nitrogen?
Yes, sawdust is an option. More details about ratios can be found here:
www.gardeners.com/how-to/all-about-composting/5061.html
What if I don't have coffee grounds? What can I use as an alternative? I'm from Philippines.
Are you going to use your drill attachment to turn the compost in the 3 bin system. Laura does not have a lisp.
Oh my gosh, I hadn't even thought about using the drill attachment to turn it. I'm going to try that out! :)
Does it need to be in the Sun or shade
Do they have a store in the Uk?
Very nice my friend.
I am sub here!
Can you leave it in the garage?
I like the first kind because it's really small but will the worm population explode?
Do you add worms to the tumblers?
Where are you shoes from??😍
I wish i can live there
Nice,,vidio,,👍💋
Do you still compost?
اهلا
What about how to cook your turkey????
CC CC why do you always leave the weirdest comments?? 😂
No worms for me, ha, ha, but the other 2 look interesting.
