    The Jack Knife is like a bridge between the more basic Roll Over and the more advanced exercises Scissors and Bicycle. It is a really great exercise but it can potentially strain your back and neck if not done well. I find that one of the most important elements about it is realising that it is all about the movement of the spine and not so much the legs. If we “throw the legs around” there is a good chance that the strain will go into the spine or neck but if our mind and nervous system understand the movement to come from the core and the spine then we will be perfectly safe. Try to imagine for a moment that you don’t have legs… and feel the movement of the pelvis and the spine through space- feel the sits bones drawing together to lift off the floor and travel all the way over head. Then lift the whole of your pelvis up towards the ceiling as much as you can and then roll down very slowly- making sure to feel each and every vertebrae as it touches the ground. Repeat it in this way as many times as necessary to get a clear sense of the movement. Then pay attention to your legs again…
