The 7 Kilometer Rivelin Tunnel below Stanage Edge from Ladybower Reservoir
Join me as i embark on a beautiful walk through the Peak District tracing the 124 year old tunnel that travels deep below ground from Ladybower Reservoir through to Rivelin Reservoirs near Sheffield.
There is plenty to be seen as we begin our journey at Heatherdene beside Ladybower. Heading up over the hills and moorland. Can we find any trace of the tunnel abobve ground as we skirt owards Stanage Edge? What History remains?

I love these videos Ant. Spent loads of time up the Peaks. Tent, 4 kids, dog, husband, cheap rent in a farmers field. Perfect. I'll never get to explore it all in my lifetime, too vast an expanse. I'll sit at home, in the warm and watch you instead xx
Coincidentally today I was tracing the route of the gravity-fed Derwent Aquaduct (shown on your first map) which runs from Derwent Dam all the way to Watnall, Notts via Ambergate, Ripley, Langley Mill and Eastwood. It actually runs under my street, Cliff Boulevard in Kimberley. I knew the Derwent dams supplied Notts but never knew exactly how, Lots of stone built valve houses, manhole covers and old infrastructure along the way. That would be a good project for you! If you need any more info I have been researching it. The aquaduct akso has a pipe that goes to Derby and Leicester!

Fascinating. Noticable that no shafts were sunk for construction & ventilation. There's an amazing sighting tower above Silsden on the Barden Aquaduct in West Yorkshire next to an air shaft.
i wonder if the circular base at the bottom of one of the sighting towers in the vid was actually a ventilation shaft when the tunnel was constructed .
@@kawasakikev8905 The most obvious indicator of shafts is usually spoil heaps, especially on remote moors. No sign of any here.
There's a water tunnel near Hebden Bridge which has 3 shafts on it with large spoil heaps.
@@alanjewell9550 There is one ventilation shaft near Jarvis Clough, at SK 2134,8611. Interestingly, there are quite a few field boundaries that follow the tunnel exactly parallel.There's a two kilometre wall across White Rake in the middle of nowhere that is exactly aligned with the tunnel. (I can't put my hand on my 1:25k map, so I can't place a ruler along to confirm.)

Absolutely brilliant, so much information and fantastic aerial shots. old abandoned buildings dotted around the countryside fascinate me. If only they could speak and tell their story as to why they are there, what purpose they served etc.

What wonderful memories this video has brought back Ant. I sprnt nany times around Ladybower as a child an adult & taking my son on visits, also my late sister use to live near Rivelin & we use to have many walks in Rivelin Valley. We never knew about the tunnel so this has been amazing to watch & learn about the history of the tunnel, Its a beautiful place to spend time & reminisce. Fab video again. ❤😊

Another excellent video, still in the area, start at Malin Bridge waterwheel and follow the river Rivelin up the valley taking in the mill ponds, grinding wheels, culverts and sluices of the old now gone mills from as far back as 1790 when the cutlery industry was in its infancy, this will take you to the Rivelin dam where this video finished.
I've been to looking at maps this week of that area I'll be back later this month I think

Excellent work Ant. These walks/sploors are right up my brain pipe, as M'lady and I often did similar all over Cornwall.
But I started early... Exploring the old railbeds of Pembrokeshire when I was a teen. There's always something about old industrial civil engineering/infrastructure that sends a spooky shiver down one's spine... Speaking of 'Spooky'... That 'Spooky House' was not really spooky to me... I'd give my eye teeth to move in and live there permanently - especially given that I am about to made homeless by heartless redevelopers and our corrupt council [sigh]

beautiful photography whilst unlocking long lost secrets of the peaks, well done Ant, I think you should make a 'floating drone' if it had a bit of power you could probably explore and photograph many previously unseen tunnels and caves. Anyway thanks for the film and all your unique ways of bringing your walks to life
This reminded me of a week i spent on an outward bounds course in the early 80s based at Alport Castles Farm. Back then it was a Derbyshire Police outward bounds facility and we went from a big local firm who had an arrangement with them. Think the farm is private now. We climbed at Stanage edge but ive not been back since, maybe I should.
The water on the film is so orange, obviously dyed with the peat from Kinder and the like.
I wonder if the "white brick" might have been glazed bricks, maybe so the could check water clarity?
The fact that idiots would not only take a bar b que into the peak but put it on a wooden bench shows the stupid mentality of some people.

Really enjoyed that. There's a couple of other tunnels in that area. One from the Snake Pass to the Derwent Dam and a really long aquaduct from Ladybower to Ambergate that follows the Derwent Valley.

@@TrekkingExploration just finishing the video off now. At the spooky house bit. My friend posted a video of that a week ago on his mtb channel. I’m from Rotherham and have done climbing since the 90s. I often go hiking round Langsett reservoir which has some decent history to look into plus the iconic cut gate path used to cut through the middle of the reservoir

Also daledike reservoir may have some link up tunnels from lady bower and there’s an interesting tall building up on the hill from there which will also have some history to it

Great, loved the drone footage. Glad you found the map useful, I did read that the tunnel was inspected by boat and the brickwork lining was in excellent condition for a gravity fed supply.

One of the two aqueduct pipes that run from Derwent reservoir feeds the riverlin tunnel. It’s all done by gravity and the water isn’t pumped up from the ladybower below. Fantastic video yet again, keep them coming.
Great video Ant, always fascinated with waterworks infrastructure despite having a bit of a phobia of the plugholes and tunnels, don't know what that's all about. I'm curious about what the building on the moor was used for with it's two fireplaces, It doesn't give away any clues as to what went on there.
I always knew about the riverlin/ladybower tunnel glad you made this video ,it's so deep below ground you would not think it was level from ladybower to rivelin,

I think I've come across that 4th tower a few years ago without knowing what it was. Stunning scenery, I've never really walked around the peak district landscape that much.
It's possible some of these ornate huts you come across are hydraulic ram sheds, have a look next time and if there are inlets and outlets, that's probably what it is. There's one near me looks almost identical, only it's also marked on the old maps as hydraulic ram. (let me know if you'd be interested in photos/location etc)

Sighting towers could have had a 20 or 30 foot pole on top, marked on the drawing if you look closely is Shaft 2 and Shaft 1 at approx. 3rd distance points

Hi great video. That is a great area for industrial history. You could go down the Rivilin valley and see all the old water mills all the way to Malin Bridge, you could go over to the Loxley Valley and see the sites of the Great Sheffield Flood all the way down to Kelham Island (where steel for the Brooklyn Bridge came from) or go back to the Ladybower Dams area to do the Dambusters history.

Local folk law says that on sunset on two days of the year the light (not the image) of the setting sun is seen at the Rivelin Portal. The area next to Redmires reservoir which you passed through was used for training in WW1 and the trench system of 'Hill 60' was constructed. Some where between the Stanage Edge marker and the 4th marker a large gas pipe runs south to north from the West end of Ringinglow road and can be seen on iphone maps set to satellite view. A second runs south to north just below the lower Rivelin reservoir wall but above the new covered reservoir.
Very very good .Iv been at the top sighting tower and now know we're to look for the entrance.last year I went to find the rivelin exit.it was obscured by bushes.they should clear it and put a board up to recognise this achievement.could we do it today.under budget.
Now if there was a bus stop on the road by rivelin dam back to ladybower it would be perfect.just got my bus pass.

Great video Ant. When you said there was a circular arrangement at the base of that tower is it possible that there was a bored air shaft to the tunnel ? It would be a long tunnel with not much air when they were building it . Obviously if shafts did go down they would need marking
