I tried without the bottom but it's harder to dig. I prefer to bury the pot by an inch or so, to encourage roots to grow into the ground. The best of both worlds..fast grown and easy to dig.
The easiest way is to cut the roots growing to the sides with a spade from time to time before they become too long and thick. Not too close to the trunk, of course.

Pots are the only solution for me since I live in the Midwest and it’s get extremely cold over here
So a pot works best. But the ground is sufficient. Either way, you start by planting it. Probably gotta feed it too I imagine. Good luck everyone.
