Exquisite is the flow of Dark Star into St Stephen into the Eleven. As someone says here, that is an experience hard to separate into single “songs”. It is an entire cathedral of crescendoing continuity.
This was the song that opened my eyes and brought me to The Grateful Dead. It remains probably my favourite song of theirs still. The version that I first heard was from "Live Dead". Recently I bought the re-mastered album from itunes. Well worth the 9 bucks! This song is absolutely soaring and totally unpredictable. LOVE IT!!
phil and bobby are two of the most under-appreciated musicians i can think of. yeah, they've had their ups and downs, but when they're "on", they do stuff no one else can do. no one.
Yep. Phil is a musician's musician and Bobby has the weirdest (or most unique) approach to rhythm guitar that I've literally ever heard in all my 41 years.
@@DB-LBC the only other group that had the mastery of that approach was the Allman Brothers Band who ended up being close collaborators with the Dead. Their long improvisations is their best work and some of the best things that came out of rock and roll.
No more time to tell how This is the season of what Now is the time of returning With thought jewels polished and gleaming Now is the time past believing The child has relinquished the reign Now is the test of the boomerang Tossed in the night of redeeming Eight sided whispering hallelujah hatrack Seven faced marble eye transitory dream doll six proud walkers on jinglebell rainbow Five men writing in fingers of gold Four men tracking down the great white sperm whale Three girls wait in a foreign dominion Ride in the whale belly Fade away in moonlight Sink beneath the waters to the coral sand below Now is the time of returning
If there is one version of this song that makes me feel like Jerry is leading the rest of the guys through a winding trail of up/down and side to side, it is this one. I still remember my first listen of 2-28-69, on a tape of course lol, and it absolutely floored me. What I would give to have been there.
mind blown. Bought the bootleg 2CD set "The Dead Don't Have No Mercy" at a Tempe rare CD store, perfect SBD, sounded exactly like this, straight from reel to reel to CD... almost wore them out spinning those gems for friends and acquaintances... '69 was a glorious year for the Dead.

"cathedral of crescendoing continuity." Like life eh?

A band beyond description that just does not get old!

@@wangson it's just jazz comping. It's not that weird if you listen to jazz.
But it's unusual in the rock scenario. Long live the grateful dead!

Nearly 50 years ago - inshallah, now is the test of the boomerang
The best of the three versions i have listened to today!
if only they had ever had a singer.
😂😂😂
finest Eleven ever played, period, the end... rollercoaster ride
this one and 4/13
Chris Phillips I am also partial to 4/21 and 12/30... 4/13 is a hot one too, missed that version somehow, TY
10/12/68

Jerry on this night: "I dare you boys to keep up..."
thankfully, they did, but just barely... in Phil we Trust
+ToGetToTerrapin .OR IN LSD WE TRUST

MERRYJERRYL Just a cog in the wheel; if the thunder don't get ya then the lightning will.
Folks:
I love this.
I’m too lazy, but someone needs to put together a 10 hour best of the 11 loop 😊
Put this song on and its like Christmas. Jerry Clause!!
Thanks!
soaring !!! :D :D :D
I didn't think you could get better than the Live Dead version, but apparently you could.
Only reason I like Live/Dead’s more is the sound of the organ, perfectly psychedelic
I bought the poster from Ben who ran Poster Mat in San Francisco 1987

TC!
yummy
This counts more like 11/16 than 11/8 time. To me anyway
The second number only matters in sheet music and the only paper I hear the Grateful Dead using here is too small to chart this out on lol
what guitar was Jerry playing on this night? my guess is a Gibson SG but I have no idea
Possessed
I once threw a tire on a bonfire at a keg party in the middle of the woods while listening to this song...
