I was going to comment this same thing. I was open to what Jaime was saying until he used a common racist trope diminish Spike's concern. That was very disappointing . I will say we all can misspeak and I have said many things in the past that are really cringe for me now and I would like to hear if Jaime would regret that choice of words in hindsight.
What's impressive about Dave. To feel what he felt, respond the way he did, to the point it overrode the money, fame, etc. that would have come with his ignoring the revelation and walking away. The difference in people. Thankful for Dave taking the path he did. I couldn't say what I would have done. Plenty people have their opinions, but unless you are living that life, I don't think you can truthfully say what you would do. Respect and honour to his mother.

Absolutely. Spike used to be accused of being jealous of Tyler Perry. And that was based on Tyler's success at the box office and making money. Sure power comes with money but if you're demeaning yourself and your people to make that money then IMO that can't be considered power.

I don't believe it was ever a personal thing with Spike's position of which I agreed, against Tyler but a case of calling it out for what it is. My critique has more to with his television programs than movies/plays although I have some issues with all three. For example f you watch programs from a different era like Steppin Fetchit or Amos & Andy among other depictions from past eras of how Blacks were characterized and compare them with many of the demeaning depictions In Tyler's television programs, I don't see much if any difference other than the time periods.

I can understand what Spike is saying. I love the boondocks to death. But I realized through talking to people that the satirical messages fly over people's heads often.
I think because folks get stuck on jokes and characters before the message. Thats why maybe our content should make the message more pivotal then the jokes.
Huey’s character would often explain why this is wrong or that is wrong. I can only shake my head at those who didn’t get it. With that being said I wouldn’t want my shows to be too preachy like how Black-ish seems to be at times....

You can't cry that nobody takes you seriously or mistreats you when you engage in the buffoonery that often is seen. I think the show is about taking action and responsibility for yourself and your people, not relying on the white man to save you.

@@ladybluelotusI think ultimately it comes down to “do you think we’re a joke or do you see us as human too?” I’d like to think that most people that blindly watched tv back then didn’t go into watching a show just to laugh at a minority. I think most people wanted to connect with what the creators were saying rather than look at the skin colors of the characters and be filled with malice. People can be more understanding than what you give them credit for at times, I think you just need to be optimistic about their attitudes because if you just don’t trust anyone you’re gonna be hurt more often than not.

I look forward to the day when we start recognizing our accomplishments instead of continuing to think that nothing has changed. That is also what keeps us down. For every social accomplishment, there was systemic economic cost to the point that compared 1890's, we've been kneecapped to generational subservience where we beg for equal opportunity to serve whites and level up their prosperity. If you ever read Duboise, he quoted white politicians that stated that the white race would put us in our current economic predicament and eventually starve us into extinction. Bamboozled is one of my favorite movies. It predicted a lot of the Reality TV shenanigans before the ball really got rolling on that genre. Sidenote: I want that School Daze sweatshirt (7:40)
Spike wasn’t wrong about those 90s-00s sitcoms. They could’ve done it smarter. They could’ve been more mindful. There have been improvements because of Spike’s influence.
Unlike most I have no problem with the content provided by TP, Wayans, etc. The issue is the gatekeepers. They will only show one vision or type of black storytelling at one time. The same thing occurs on radio. The black music they play is less than 1% of what's actually made, but they will only play that instead of wider array of sounds. If TP could exist alongside other creators at the same the nature of the criticism wouldn't be as intense. As far as The PJs are concerned, that's the first Eddie Murphy character that I can think of that's working class. Most of his film rolls were as a successful black man. Comedy is necessary, especially in a medium that where black creators and fans alike are hyper sensitive regarding the black image. We need Chris Rock's satire, the Wayans' parodies, Spike's drama/surrealism, Tyler's silliness, Fuqua's action-driven stories, etc. But we need them all at once on the same platforms. It can't be seasonal. We need them all, all the time.
Spike has multiple projects on Netflix, including the show, “She Gotta Have It”, “See You Yesterday “ and of course “Da 5 Bloods”. He has others in development with Netflix and HBOMax.

Bamboozled is a fav! If you didn't get the message and actual great performances I don't know what to tell you. The scene were Jada's character tells her brother (played by Mos Def) "to get your field n*gga ass outta my house n*gga house" yes, that was funny! Spike Lee directed ChiRaq which was a satire. I wanted to see a serious movie about living in Chicago and the message of overcoming life there amongst violence, but he chose to go the comic route

Tyler Perry's main vehicle was "Madea". People loved it. It made him a lot of money. He bought his own studio. And now he's able to branch out into more versatile stories. Also although "Madea" may be concidered "ratchet", a lot of people could relate to the character. His stories were "satirical". Tyler Perry injected "truth and love for black people and God" in his art, and through the characters, which is obvious to fans of his work. Lastly "black people made Tyler Perry rich, not white people", so that alone eliminates the "minstrel" tag.

I see what spike lee is talking about the PJs but for me as a Black 90s kid that was big into stop motion animation, that's a big pill to swallow because I that show showed me that we could be in that field of animation
Definitely in agreement with Spike Lee when it comes to a lot of sitcoms and movies. Over the years, I've come to feel very much the same way about a lot of music from black artists, as well.
The problem is We Have NO Control over How we are portrayed and "who" portrays us. We have no real sayso in the industry and are more often than not regulated to what "white tastes" want or thinks is important or funny or even "Black".

With the height of sitcoms and sketch comedy shows mostly behind us, "reality television" of today can view in this light. It is far more deliberate in manufacturing conflict. There has always been strong opinions within the community over what is realistic and quality representation.
These shows are years old. Look at the gains we have made since many of these shows were on the air. Insecure, Ava Duvernay, Judas and the Black Messiah, One Night in Miami and on and on. I think we need to look at the gains that we have made while realizing that we have more work to do. The more black people get control, the more the stories will reflect us.
I couldn’t really get into that show, it seemed like they were over doing the black characters. Like as if white men were doing the black characters and thought this is how they should act.

I see Gangsta Rap as a kind of Minstrel show. It markets a cartoonish fantasy of "authentic" African American streetlife to mostly white middle and upper-middle-class white boys the world over and allows them to adopt a gangster persona for a bit while still enjoying their comfortable lives.
Entertainment is almost never meant to be taken literally. Satire is often used to subliminally teach people the ills of their traits and traditions. While Spike Lee takes more direct, grim, and imposing approaches to conveying messages in his films, other people use “humor, irony, exaggeration, or ridicule” to convey those same messages in a more palatable manner. Spike Lee is full of himself in a lot of ways. It’s obvious his way of thinking doesn’t inspire much change in our community. They say, “sometimes you need to laugh to keep from crying”. Let Tyler Perry and whomever else uplift people in their own way! 🤷🏿♂️✌🏿
The Parkers and Moesha, wasn't all that bad. Remember in Moesha the parents were successful. And at least on the Parkers, everyone was in college trying to improve themselves. What was bad was the 90s and early 2000s movies that was mostly gangsta movies or black stereotype movies.

🗣Say it for the ones in the back! While I respect Spike Lee as one of my favorite directors and get where he is coming from, it's COMEDY. Coming from someone who loves deep content, it's okay for black creators to create shows for and about black folks for the sake of entertainment. I never got the impression that many of the black sitcoms of the 90s and the early 20s were overly degrading to black folks. And they consist of content to make people laugh doesn't mean that they were void of moral themes and relatability to black people. Even when considering the long history of black stigmatization through film and media, comedic content made by content creators/writers from other racialized groups also consists of some stereotypical elements about their people (ex. Fresh Off The Boat and the George Lopez Show). This, however, is not to justify or excuse the degradation of black folks in entertainment, but it's COMEDY. Also, let's not act like black viewers didn't enjoy these sitcoms when it was our viewership that kept many of these shows on the air with great ratings for the most part.

Spike was right. If I remember correctly Jamie, Martin and Eddie's show featured charictures of blk women that still effect the image of blk women today as masculine and ghetto. And both Martin's and Jamie's show aired on Fox (at one point), and we all know how racist Fox is.
I'm black and I loved In Living Colour a little better than SNL. I love satirical comedy. I didn't see it as a minstrel. I'm from Mississippi and I love Madea. People really are characters so when I see Brown, Madea, Cora, etc they are like people I really encounter. The storylines are subjects that I can relate to as well. It is funny, it's just like watching my family, it's warm, some of the characters exhibit love, warmth, and humanity when another person is down. It's a reflection of my life. My life did not mirror the Cosbys. It was funny, but I didn't come from 2 high middle class parents. I grew up with a single mom who was a nurses aid in the south. So I've seen every character in Madea's plays pass through my life at some point while I was growing up. What looks like minstrel shows for some is a reflection of life for others. I'm so glad that those other artists followed there hearts because they were able to touch their audiences lives. Spike Lee cannot control everything. Everyone cannot do the same art. He reach his audience and the others reach their audience. People are 3 dimensional they have good, bad, funny, serious, highs, lows, graceful, and uncouth within themselves so to show 1 aspect is boring, and doesn't represent full complexities of a person. Even if All shows were like the Cosby and the others didn't exist, it still would not change a racist heart and make them see you different. So I say don't just adjust your art on how other races will perceive it. Follow your heart and create your vision of art and give it to the audience that you meant it for. You never know whose lives you are changing.
It takes courage, a real knowledge of one's history to walk on stage strong and be dedicated over the influence of money. I watched shows like Living Color and was horrified at how profits, ego and the lack of real creativity caused talented comedians to walk on stage and mock people who had some success and was popular. I felt that they went over board to appease a racist audience and when confronted they always come up with flimsy excuses because money has greater value than pride in their own culture and race. Thank you Spike Lee for having the guts to call them out. I have no respect for the things they do to mock the progress of Africans in this country.

I think the show is about taking action and responsibility for yourself and your people, not relying on the white man to save you.

@@ladybluelotusI think ultimately it comes down to “do you think we’re a joke or do you see us as human too?” I’d like to think that most people that blindly watched tv back then didn’t go into watching a show just to laugh at a minority. I think most people wanted to connect with what the creators were saying rather than look at the skin colors of the characters and be filled with malice. People can be more understanding than what you give them credit for at times, I think you just need to be optimistic about their attitudes because if you just don’t trust anyone you’re gonna be hurt more often than not.
I have some issues with some of the stuff that Spike says sometimes but he is right that these studios mainly want modern minstrel shows.

Unlike most I have no problem with the content provided by TP, Wayans, etc. The issue is the gatekeepers. They will only show one vision or type of black storytelling at one time. The same thing occurs on radio. The black music they play is less than 1% of what's actually made, but they will only play that instead of wider array of sounds. If TP could exist alongside other creators at the same the nature of the criticism wouldn't be as intense.
As far as The PJs are concerned, that's the first Eddie Murphy character that I can think of that's working class. Most of his film rolls were as a successful black man. Comedy is necessary, especially in a medium that where black creators and fans alike are hyper sensitive regarding the black image. We need Chris Rock's satire, the Wayans' parodies, Spike's drama/surrealism, Tyler's silliness, Fuqua's action-driven stories, etc. But we need them all at once on the same platforms. It can't be seasonal. We need them all, all the time.

Spike Lee directed ChiRaq which was a satire. I wanted to see a serious movie about living in Chicago and the message of overcoming life there amongst violence, but he chose to go the comic route

Tyler Perry's main vehicle was "Madea". People loved it. It made him a lot of money. He bought his own studio. And now he's able to branch out into more versatile stories. Also although "Madea" may be concidered "ratchet", a lot of people could relate to the character. His stories were "satirical". Tyler Perry injected "truth and love for black people and God" in his art, and through the characters, which is obvious to fans of his work. Lastly "black people made Tyler Perry rich, not white people", so that alone eliminates the "minstrel" tag.

I see what spike lee is talking about the PJs but for me as a Black 90s kid that was big into stop motion animation, that's a big pill to swallow because I that show showed me that we could be in that field of animation

When Bamboozled came out I was a kid but I do remember it not getting a lot of promotion. I still haven't seen it.
With the height of sitcoms and sketch comedy shows mostly behind us, "reality television" of today can view in this light. It is far more deliberate in manufacturing conflict. There has always been strong opinions within the community over what is realistic and quality representation.
These shows are years old. Look at the gains we have made since many of these shows were on the air. Insecure, Ava Duvernay, Judas and the Black Messiah, One Night in Miami and on and on. I think we need to look at the gains that we have made while realizing that we have more work to do. The more black people get control, the more the stories will reflect us.

I see Gangsta Rap as a kind of Minstrel show. It markets a cartoonish fantasy of "authentic" African American streetlife to mostly white middle and upper-middle-class white boys the world over and allows them to adopt a gangster persona for a bit while still enjoying their comfortable lives.
Entertainment is almost never meant to be taken literally. Satire is often used to subliminally teach people the ills of their traits and traditions. While Spike Lee takes more direct, grim, and imposing approaches to conveying messages in his films, other people use “humor, irony, exaggeration, or ridicule” to convey those same messages in a more palatable manner. Spike Lee is full of himself in a lot of ways. It’s obvious his way of thinking doesn’t inspire much change in our community. They say, “sometimes you need to laugh to keep from crying”. Let Tyler Perry and whomever else uplift people in their own way! 🤷🏿♂️✌🏿

The Parkers and Moesha, wasn't all that bad. Remember in Moesha the parents were successful. And at least on the Parkers, everyone was in college trying to improve themselves. What was bad was the 90s and early 2000s movies that was mostly gangsta movies or black stereotype movies.

There were a lot of other black shows where the black people were successful, too.

On that note, I have already cancelled Cosby, Eddie Murphy, Jamie Foxx, Martin Lawrence, Cuba Gooding Jr., Whoopi Goldberg, Diana Ross, Patti LaBelle, Gladys Knight, Tyler Perry, Steve Harvey, Niecy Nash, Lil' Kim, Mo'Nique, Gayle King, Oprah Winfrey and the other black celebrities whom they can do whatever they wanted to do by getting that paper.
I had to agree about Spike's statements about the modern-day black sitcoms from both WB & UPN era. Like I said, I used to watch those shows, but not anymore. In the early times, Mantan Moreland, Willie Best, Stepin Fetchit and even Hattie McDaniel let that stuff get into their minds and set you up. 🗣Say it for the ones in the back! While I respect Spike Lee as one of my favorite directors and get where he is coming from, it's COMEDY. Coming from someone who loves deep content, it's okay for black creators to create shows for and about black folks for the sake of entertainment. I never got the impression that many of the black sitcoms of the 90s and the early 20s were overly degrading to black folks. And they consist of content to make people laugh doesn't mean that they were void of moral themes and relatability to black people. Even when considering the long history of black stigmatization through film and media, comedic content made by content creators/writers from other racialized groups also consists of some stereotypical elements about their people (ex. Fresh Off The Boat and the George Lopez Show). This, however, is not to justify or excuse the degradation of black folks in entertainment, but it's COMEDY. Also, let's not act like black viewers didn't enjoy these sitcoms when it was our viewership that kept many of these shows on the air with great ratings for the most part.

I'm black and I loved In Living Colour a little better than SNL. I love satirical comedy. I didn't see it as a minstrel. I'm from Mississippi and I love Madea. People really are characters so when I see Brown, Madea, Cora, etc they are like people I really encounter. The storylines are subjects that I can relate to as well. It is funny, it's just like watching my family, it's warm, some of the characters exhibit love, warmth, and humanity when another person is down. It's a reflection of my life. My life did not mirror the Cosbys. It was funny, but I didn't come from 2 high middle class parents. I grew up with a single mom who was a nurses aid in the south. So I've seen every character in Madea's plays pass through my life at some point while I was growing up. What looks like minstrel shows for some is a reflection of life for others. I'm so glad that those other artists followed there hearts because they were able to touch their audiences lives. Spike Lee cannot control everything. Everyone cannot do the same art. He reach his audience and the others reach their audience. People are 3 dimensional they have good, bad, funny, serious, highs, lows, graceful, and uncouth within themselves so to show 1 aspect is boring, and doesn't represent full complexities of a person. Even if All shows were like the Cosby and the others didn't exist, it still would not change a racist heart and make them see you different. So I say don't just adjust your art on how other races will perceive it. Follow your heart and create your vision of art and give it to the audience that you meant it for. You never know whose lives you are changing.

My only problem with Spike is that every movie he does is proclaimed as satire & anything hes not involved in he calls coonery.
That's because if he didn't develop it, write it, or co-sign it, Spike will hate on it.
It takes courage, a real knowledge of one's history to walk on stage strong and be dedicated over the influence of money. I watched shows like Living Color and was horrified at how profits, ego and the lack of real creativity caused talented comedians to walk on stage and mock people who had some success and was popular. I felt that they went over board to appease a racist audience and when confronted they always come up with flimsy excuses because money has greater value than pride in their own culture and race. Thank you Spike Lee for having the guts to call them out. I have no respect for the things they do to mock the progress of Africans in this country.

Look I'm not Muslim or christian because both religions were forced on our ancestors weather you know this or not just like the name African American. Truth be told both africa and america were named after white conquerors and neither is a nationality and definitely not the nationality of the so called black people.

@@gordoncooper7019 Peace. America, the entire Western Hemisphere, is named after the Great Amaru Khan; later used by the "Europeans" to label the land mass. Africa came from the word Ifrik/Afrik meaning Motherland; later used by the Romans to label the land mass.

I am interested to know where you got your info because if you can prove me wrong I don't have a problem with that.
