Funny, long straights with tight turns at the end are why braking bumps exist. Braking bumps are usually caused by poor trail design. Ban gravel bikes. A view rides ago a gravel biker told me to turn around cause the forest path I was riding on would end in a 100 meters. Actually there was just a puddle of water going up to the middle of the upper thigh. Not much of a problem for my BMX-MTB-crossbreed. So don't ban gravel bikes obviously, but ban telling others what to do based on your bike experience and capabilities of your bike.
Ban skidding, shralping, and trail braiding. Ban riding around puddles and other practices that widen trails. Ban downhill travelers who don't yield the trail to uphill climbers. Ban idiots who ride in groups and stop on trails, forcing other riders to leave the trail to get around them.
Coming back to say, if a feature is well built and safe then it may be exempt from the "bad northshore" category. Rode a few trails with drops and jumps with staked logs used to form the core and embankments. Looked a bit rough but were quite hard to spot from the roads and were absolutely dreamy to ride. Solid and beautifully placed into the lines.
Bad Trail conditions and bad weather are the best part of biking hit those trails at the worse, challenge your self! It will make you a better rider and makes things interesting.

Brake bumps (in the bike park) could be immensely reduced by two main measures. ABS brakes on rental bikes and (somehow) keeping people who aren't up to the task (going actual trail speed) off of trails above their pay grade.
Squirrel catchers are great for this. The problem is people being people. Rather than realising that not being able to successfully negotiate the squirrel catcher, means that you are not ready for the trail; people push/roll/whatever over it and keep going, fucking up every step of the way.
@@Pogo69 You're going to put a squirrel catcher on a green/blue trail because people brake too hard into berms? What level trail would you suggest people try at that point? Maybe help people learn to ride if its such a big issue for you. Be the change you want to see, so they say.
What about Timber bells? The kind that ring whenever you hit a little something uneven. Some people seem to think they're super annoying. Personally, it makes me feel like I'm riding in the Alps. :)
I use a Timber Bell but I only turn it on when I see a hiker ahead on the trail. The hikers like it and almost always thank me for warning them that I was approaching. If someone rode with it on non-stop then that would definitely be annoying. I find the bell annoying myself and can't wait to turn it off after I pass the hikers lol.
@@davetscantech If your suspension is breaking, then you have a big problem. As far as braking bumps, they are caused by underskilled riders who brake with lousy technique and are riding beyond their skill level. Learn proper braking. It's more fun for you and less damaging to the trails.
@@jimwing.2178 so you think badly setup suspension causes breaking bumps, I guess all the top pros in other disciplines have bad suspension, moto off road truck etc. it happens at every level and with motor sports they also get acceleration bumps. it’s a combination of suspension and the tires bouncing, if the trails were completely smooth it would still happen. I guess the trails could be paved because smooth trails are so fun. Regardless, you can’t ban breaking bumps, you have to ban the riders technique.
You can hate on gravel bikers on the downhill trails because they are going too slow, picking & choosing their lines too carefully, and ruin it for the mountain bikers.

I agree with restricting new models every year, because the only reason for it is to make bike companies more money, as the only people that would get real advantage of it are the professionals and many of them aren't actually paying for, them or at least not in the same way normal people would that have a brand-personal loyalty because they like a rider. Gravel bikes have their use, they are good more long distance trail/road cycle tours but not impossible for short rough trail, they just have much less travel on the front and they're a hard tail.
I suspect as the engineering design of bike manufacturer has become more intense, engineers with automotive background and experience have crossed over and have bought with them processes and ways of working into the industry. New MY's are common place in automotive for the same reason you mentioned- To keep the financial income stream on target. Given the life span of a bike though I find it very wasteful unless there has been major amendments to the design, past aesthetic changes. Nothing stopping them skipping MY though. As it should just be used as an identifier to version and not something to make people view the bike as obsolete or unfashionable.
i think banning new bike models every year is a great idea. Unless the brand has something that is noticeablely different from the prior year, they should abstain from releasing essentially the same product over an over again.
You should not ban anything! Nothing at all should ever be banned that's not a human rights violation! And even then some are acceptable and the only way humanity moves forward!
Ban propriety stuff. Pretty much everything that is not part of a frame should be in some kind of open standard (think UDH). Then everything that dones't have a good reason and is part of the frame should be part of a "standard set". So frame bearings, nuts, bolts, washers and bushings. No one should have to look thought internet archives to find out what bearing, bushing or nut they need because the manufacturer is no longer providing them and when they did it cost 10x the actual value. Ban not releasing cad/technical specifications of propriety stuff that actually makes sense that are property (frame-specific inserts eg. flip chips)
No! Bring the dork disk back. I was annoyed last time spending an $11k on a bike but no dork disks. They weigh nothing but prevent an expensive issue when you chain gets stuck in the spokes. This may not be common, but it will happen eventually.
@@theramblingsofbilbotheerid3048 Never say never! Setting limits screws will help, but not eliminate the risks of chain jumping out completely. This is mountain biking after all -- you ride on a rough terrain = the chain flaps up and down.

I have no idea why people bitch and moan about PF. It's a better system than threaded. I'll only buy PF bikes.
Buy from companies that know how to do PF.
Threaded in this day and age just means that the manufacturer can't do QA properly, and so is a huge red flag.
@@richardhaselwood9478 "I have no idea why people bitch and moan about PF."
99.57% of whiny MTBers: "I have no idea why I bitch and moan about PF. But I've read on Pink Bike that it sucks."
@@jimwing.2178 Ergh... *this*..
See also, edgy roadies who couldn't undo a pedal, but *just know* the creak on their bike is the PF BB....
who are the riders at the north shore part? 1:32 and what bikes are they using?
If you're complaining about MTB braking bumps, you need to go try motocross to actually experience braking bumps. MTB braking bumps pale in comparison!
Ban gravel bikes. A gravel bike is nothing more then a 90s mountain bike with drop bars and skinny tires. Just get a XC bike. Hopefully gravel bikes are just a fad.
Unban skin suits, but only for the ladies!
Incel vibes.... gross.
Trail moaning is important! As screaming too! These give information for the trail, and MTB gods, how much we enjoy the trip! :D
ban drop bars on anything :-), ban bikes costing over 5K :-)
Definitely ban press fit BBs
So many carbon frames getting ruined by them including my TT bike!
Ban all internal routing except for the last few centimetres of droppers. It's a pain in the arse.
Banning trail moaning is going to cause serious problems for Deaks. It's well slick eh? Oi Oi
Aero bars on a hardtail.. Really comfy, perfect bike setup
I would ban pushing content, just because you have to, quality over quantity
Things that need to go
Presta valves (rims are no longer that narrow)
170+mm crank arms (we need more 155-165mm options)
Headset cable routing
External BB bearings (use internal cups same as HS)
@danrunnheim1062 I hate them with the fire of a thousand suns. All it takes is one large manufacturer to stop using them, and the rest will follow.
Who knew Richard Ayoade knew so much about bikes.
North Shore features....main good point is to use rough cut cedar ...at the very least some sort of rough cut wood and not milled ...and definitely not pressure treated treads
…With inset grip tape or composite friction stripes
#1 - The antiquated rear derailleur design that was unfortunately inherited from road bikes. You know what I'm talking about; that thing that dangles down in the back and gets hung up and breaks all the time.
for me i wouldn't ban the gravel bike with suspension cause why right i'm a rider myself and i would love to try a rb/gravel bike with that kind of suspension
My Urban Assault Vehicle is a 1987 Raleigh Touring bike with BridgeStone Mustache Bar and Continental Top Touring in 47 - 622.
LMAO, thats my comment 😂 And I stand by it. The trail police account is a joke, and I love to troll the trolls 🤪
Love your work Boyz keep em Coming and a MASSIVE yes to no hating. Just SHRED the trails and be Cool, Calm and Collected ✌🏼Out & Thanks Blake and Owen
Thanks! Will do! 🤘🤘
I had a "have a go hero" on a drop bar bike ahead of me on an MTB trail this weekend. He just pulled over to let me pass and I said thanks.
Bad Trail conditions and bad weather are the best part of biking hit those trails at the worse, challenge your self! It will make you a better rider and makes things interesting.
drop burs wet MTB behind by ten years. we almost started off with MX inspired geometry, but then they went the way of road bikes in the woods. only to finally in the last 5 or 10 years start to make geo a lot slacker.
that fox gravel fork is sooo cute, it is like the marocchi xc forks in '96.
eBikers adding rides to Strava
*sigh* Nice straw-man, @@JohnnyChonko.
I can see nowhere that I said, nor implied, that. No solution is a panacea.
Well since you don't get paid for mtbing better stay off my trails lol
ABS won't do anything to reduce braking bumps. As long as the dirt moves, it's going to form bumps.
What about Timber bells? The kind that ring whenever you hit a little something uneven. Some people seem to think they're super annoying. Personally, it makes me feel like I'm riding in the Alps. :)
They're a good idea for areas with bears, as well as shared trails where you might encounter horses etc
How do you ban breaking bumps when they are caused by braking?
Ban breaking.
Proper technique. Not trying to go as fast as possible in every moment of a ride.
@@jimwing.2178 that’s what the ride is about, you can’t ban an effect of suspension under breaking.
You can hate on gravel bikers on the downhill trails because they are going too slow, picking & choosing their lines too carefully, and ruin it for the mountain bikers.
racing isn't about being fastest but crossing the line first. 🤣
Press fit BBs are garbage.
7:36 why are there 2 levers on the left side of the handlebars?
One for the dropper, one for the rear shock lockout. I think.
@@stanmustard7292 thank you
Ban the phrase “north shore.” I’m from the shore, and the phrase has been so bastardized that I overheard people calling a machine built wooden bridge a “north shore ladder bridge” on the east coast. Not all wood is north shore
Yup, we had a "Little North Shore" but it was made out of fallen trees, scraps of limbs, debris, and garbage that was on site. No pressure treated wood and hardware was brougt to the area. Even had an abandon car trail feature. Then it got BANNED! SOBs
Does roosting cause brake bumps?
Here’s are two controversial bans which I’d do 100%:
Ban cross country.
Ban clip and clipless paddles
i think banning new bike models every year is a great idea.
Ban not releasing cad/technical specifications of propriety stuff that actually makes sense that are property (frame-specific inserts eg. flip chips)
UDH isn’t universal, it’s intended to get us buying sram mechs
Ban dork discs behind cassette and cut back on plastic waste 😂
No! Bring the dork disk back. I was annoyed last time spending an $11k on a bike but no dork disks. They weigh nothing but prevent an expensive issue when you chain gets stuck in the spokes. This may not be common, but it will happen eventually.
@@jackbiernacki8603 it'll never happen if you set your limit screws correct 🤣
@@theramblingsofbilbotheerid3048 Never say never! Setting limits screws will help, but not eliminate the risks of chain jumping out completely. This is mountain biking after all -- you ride on a rough terrain = the chain flaps up and down.
@@jackbiernacki8603 if your chain is jumping about from a small cog into your wheel you've got issues. Likewise if your chain is flapping about when in your largest cog then you've also got issues 🤣
If your bike comes with a dork disc and you don't immediately remove it then you're a...well a dork! 😂
@@theramblingsofbilbotheerid3048 If you ride hard you will see your chain to flap at the largest cog. It is not common, but on occasions then you hit a bigger rock or root while climbing fast, it may jump out. But if always ride like a dork, then yes, it will never happen.
gravelbikes BANNED
