As rude and conceited diesel shows himself to be, I can’t help but feel Duck is the antagonist for this part of the story. There was no reason for Duck to speak so harshly to diesel from the start, and I have a feeling this is why Diesel went on a defensive diatribe about being revolutionary, since Duck was clearly making a tense environment. Diesel likely would have shown his true colours eventually, but Duck was the one who made things worse from the start.
Duck is hardworking but slightly arrogant given GWR's reputation. He's also a more recent transfer from Great Britain than the other Sodor engines so he's aware of the diesels taking over and doesn't trust them.
Generally Awdry's storytelling always supported 'tough love' authority figures and rained down on arrogant characters. I feel like the point Diesel says "I don't need to be taught, I already know everything" was when you're meant to think "Dude @*%! this guy!" If you look up Awdry's relationships with his illustrators and the TV show creators, you'll know he HATED that sort of attitude (I feel like he and Reginald Dalby held a grudge till death :P). Duck I almost feel did what he wanted to do to one of them, say 'fine do it yourself' and watch them screw up and throw the biggest tantrum ever because "no one told them what to do".
Yeah, Duck should’ve waited for Diesel to show his true colours before he started to annoy him and play a trick on him. Like you say, Diesel probably would’ve shown his true colours eventually but if I was Duck, I would wait until/unless Diesel showed his true colours before I played any tricks on him or wound Diesel up. I’m just wondering what Thomas would’ve done, whether Thomas would’ve done the same as Duck or whether he’d have been nice to Diesel and showed him around like any other engine until Diesel showed his true colours. I mean, it’s a strange one with Thomas because in Thomas and Gordon, it was made out like Thomas was just cheeky to Gordon for no reason but in The Adventure Begins, it showed that Gordon was being boastful and rude to Thomas so Thomas woke Gordon up get his own back on Gordon, rightly so in that case. Duck was right as well for the trick he played on the bigger engines in Duck Takes Charge because Duck did nothing to the bigger engines but Gordon and Henry weeshed steam in Duck’s face for no reason.
@@Sam_Brunt By this point in the series, Thomas had matured somewhat but was still largely conceited and rude. I think he would have been skeptical about diesel, and then would have started acting snide and rude after diesel says that he’s revolutionary and knows everything. He may have gotten a different response from Thomas compared to Duck, as I have a hunch Thomas would have known the meaning of the word revolutionary (while Duck doesn’t, Thomas seems to understand more larger words compared to the other engines even in the RWS), and so would have dismissed diesel even more than the other engines. What’s forgotten a lot of the time is that Thomas is OLDER than just about every other standard gauge engine on the island, and has more experience than them.
"Trucks are waiting in the yard, Tackling them with eas'll, Show the world what I can do, Gaily boasts the Diesel!" "In and out he creeps about, Like a big black weasel, When he pulls the wrong trucks out, Pop goes the Diesel!"
Never understood that choice, it should have been Henry in that illustration especially considering that Duck and the Diesel Engine is bookended with two tales showing Duck spending time at Edward's station and we see that they are good friends. well, I guess even our friends can annoy us, but it def does not make a whole lot of sense.
I wonder, if Duck had a conversation with his driver and/or fireman the night before Diesel arrived. That conversation being about his siblings being replaced by Diesel's siblings, i.e., being scrapped. That might explain his distrust toward Diesel from the start, and why he wouldn't be able to tell the other engines by the time Diesel go there.
I agree, as this and the other two episodes of this trilogy are some of my favorite narrations by Willie Rushton. Also, he may sound like Stewie or Peter Ustinov, but it's just how made himself voice Diesel. I, myself, can come up with crazy, funny voices for different cartoon characters, mostly Anime ones. I also enjoy well how Rushton sang 'Pop Goes The Diesel'. Not as good as Ringo Starr, sure, but I still like it, even both.
Both Ringo and George had very scary growls. It made it hard for me to watch episodes with Diesel engines until I was over six. By then I could fast forward the grrr noise. And it took me until I was 15 to finally listen to the noise without turning the volume down or fast forwarding.
I view it as the second one because Diesel didn’t do anything rude to anyone but Duck just jumped to conclusions and started playing a trick on Diesel like he thought Diesel was going to be rude. Diesel would’ve probably shown his nasty side eventually but until he did, Duck should’ve just been fair to Diesel and shown him what to do and been nice to Diesel.
The third best man to do Diesel's voice, the first two being Ringo Starr and George Carlin, and Ringo and George are a lot better at doing Diesel's growl than Willie's because Ringo and George made his growl strong, and their growls scared me when I was very little. When I first hard this when I got the record off an English website I thought Diesel's voice was indeed Peter Ustinov, so I say great job on Diesel's voice Willie, because I love Ustinov's voice.
I know Peter Ustinov you might recognize him as the voice of prince John in the 1973 animated classic Robin Hood. The one the cast animals as the main players
Yeah. The thought of hearing a Great Western engine boasting about his pride heritage does seem too much to hear; much like hearing James ratting about his red paint job. Although when it comes to doing work, Duck actually sticks to his priorities and fullfils them without any sign of complaint of anything that might inconvenience him. But after getting all big-headed from visiting his famous celebrity cousin and jibjab day and night about the ways of the Great Western roots just made him quite insufferable for the other engines to bare. And I thought Gordon was pretty much the irritating one. Both him and Duck are on the same par.
Willie Rushton was always a good and funny narrator ever since hearing his narrations it's a shame he's gone I didn't even know he passed away until I looked him up I was like "no way! He can't be!" But I'll miss him very much. Rest in peace Willie Rushton your narration won't be forgotten you'll be in our hearts forever and mine's.

Notably the first ever story that introduces diesel engines into the series. If only Wilbert could've lived a lil' much longer to add in more real-life trains, such as electric trains as well as others, and make 'em into characters. I would also thought that Christopher would've done more but some of his stories are pretty hit-or-miss in terms of structure.
