Great corner for Bonecrusher Smith. One Classic remark from that corner was when Joe Frazier asked, "Do you want me to fight him for ya !!" Classic.😂 The shot that put Razor down early was definitely in Bonecrusher's game plan, not a prolonged slugfest. The longer the fight went, the more detrimental it was for the Bonecrusher.
Razor Ruddock fights were always exciting to watch. That smash shot was devastating. Tyson ate a lot of great shots from him that would render other fighters to be out cold.
Poor James...he had Ruddock on queer street in round 2 but he rushed the huge Jamaican without throwing effective punches allowing Razor to clinch and clear his head. He threw one straight and lethal right hand about 30 seconds after the knockdown that would have ended it but he missed by a couple of inches. If he had given himself some distance and jabbed before throwing combinations, he would have been much more effective. He shot his bolt in the round and looked tired and vulnerable the rest of the way. The wonderful and frustrating thing about boxing is a fighter's fortunes can be changed by a missed punch. The right hand Bonecrusher threw in round 2 was the turning point. Missed a spectacular victory by inches.
I think the right hand you're talking about was at 1:32 of the round, or 8:22 of the video. Yeah, Razor was already hanging on for dear life and that right had would've probably put him to sleep for a minute.
Completely agree. The power would always be there but the skills he had abandoned would resurface under Steward's guidance. On top of that, Steward works on a fighter's defense and maximizes their ability and minimizes their weaknesses.

Great performance by the "Razor"! But the look of embarrassment was evident as "Bonecrusher" knocked him down. Sad how Ruddock's path to being the heavyweight champion was derailed,he certainly would've been one of the most deadliest champions there's ever been! Ruddock had one hell of a punch!!
Ruddock was one dimensional. He’s defense was poor, he barely used his jab to set up his punches and he wasn’t the sharpest tool in the shed. He had power and that was it.
I agree with Reinaldo Manuel. I have seen him lost to Mike Tyson (two fights) which were the best of his career. In the second fight, Ruddock went to full distance with Mike Tyson. That was the very best of him. But his loss to Tommy Morrison and Lennox Lewis was due mainly to his lack of balance and defence. In this fight, Ruddock suffered his knock down due also to his lack of defence.
Ruddock was one of the most dangerous heavyweights ive ever seen in the ring, what a pure punching heavyweight machine he was! I sure wouldve loved to have seen him become heavyweight champion!
Stamina for Smith boiled down to age difference. Smith was 11 years older that Ruddock. Smith looked tired from the early rounds, and Ruddock was just getting warmed up. Age 36 is not old, but it is old for a boxer.
I've been looking for this fight for YEARS. I couldn't remember who it was that knocked down Ruddock, and Ruddock was laughing. I figured it was Jaco, but no. I remember before the Tyson fight Roy Firestone interviewing Razor and asking him why the hell he'd be laughing and he said, "it's better than crying!" lol. Today I was watching Tyson-Razor pre-fight stuff and someone mentioned he had been hurt pretty bad by Bonecrusher, and wa-la, here it is. Thanks!
This is the fight that I pinpoint as the one where Ruddock began to rely on his power and where his boxing skills took a permanent backseat. I figured he would beat Bonecrusher but not by knockout. Bonecrusher had a tendency to masquerade as BoneHUGGER, and that’s what I expected. Smith came to fight, though, and dropped Ruddock early, and I remember thinking, “The Razor is in over his head.” The Razor showed heart, though. He fought back. As listless as he could be, when Bonecrusher was ON, he was one of the more devastating punchers in the heavyweight division (see the fights with Bruno, Weaver and Witherspoon). Considering how early he got decked in the 2nd round, The Razor showed incredible fortitude. Ultimately, his youth and conditioning helped him prevail.
Bone Crusher lacked a really good trainer. It didn''t help that he started into boxing very late... The irony is, that Razor's style seemed similar to BoneCrusher. Awkward hitting style and poor defense (for both).
*(**13:15**) ..This is the exact stance against Bonecrusher, that Ruddock never corrected.. he bends over to the side and leaves himself wide open; which eventually led to him getting K.O.D by Lennox Lewis in their bout in '92!* WHAT WERE THEY THINKING.???.. his trainers should have known better than to ignore such a flagrant lapse in judgement and Ruddock should have sharpened his skill's after this fight. Lennox would take note of this and eventually would later expose Razor's weaknesses and dominate him in spectacular fashion!
Yep, proof Lennox really studied Ruddock's fights and analyzed his weaknesses. Tyson also dropped Ruddock in both fights in same exact fashion. I guess Ruddock never really corrected his mistakes.
Ruddock in this thin athletic weight was potentially a champion When he got so big muscular he got set in his ways throwing haymakers and missing most of the time.
@Nobby Barnes I agree. In his prime, Bonecrusher had decent boxing skills and was a big knockout guy. He just had nothing in the tank for this fight. Ruddock was good, but sloppy. Lennox Lewis proved that.
Ruddock after getting some beating in initial rounds gathered himself up and finished the game with his famous left hand which hit like a mule kick as was acknowledged by even Tyson. Two gentle men boxers were a treat to watch.
Razor inevitably telegraphed that left upward smash. That got him in significant problems in his two Tyson bouts. So, it’s interesting to see here that he actually used several straight rights to prevail over James “Boneweary” Smith.
