    Cody, I have to point something out that you may not have thought about. the plants that are growing in the mine will have slowed growth (probably significant) if they don't also have airflow. during photosynthesis, the stomata of the plant (entrances for CO2 and exits for O2) will function more efficiently if the O2 is carried away. if it builds up, it will hinder photosynthesis by attaching to a intermediate product (G3P) in the chain of reactions that create glucose because O2 has a greater affinity for it than the next substrate. the subsequent molecules that are made with the O2 and G3P are 100% useless and ultimately slow your growth. P.S. I love the series!

    • @ScottRobson
      @ScottRobson 8 років тому

      This is a good point. Lifting the plastic lid will help here. Hopefully the size of the cave will mean little O2 buildup but some kind of ventilation will really help here.

    • @james_bond1869
      @james_bond1869 8 років тому

      Scott Robson true, diffusion of O2 molecules will be faster if the cave is wider, but since he has the plants located in the back (because it is warmer), the rate of diffusion is slowed by having to move down such a long tunnel. therefore, diffusion will hardly make a difference in theory and Cody will still have growth issues.

    The closer you can get that light to the plants the better they will grow. Moving them further away should actually make things worse. Looks like the stems have stretched a lot, and that's from not having enough light. That being said, I love what you are doing. Thanks so much for making these videos.
    Oh yeah, putting reflective mylar around the plants will help a lot. You want to direct every little drop of light to those plants.

    If that pipe is setup as a security measure in case the shaft collapses I'd recommend you to setup 2 pipes: one for the air to go in, and another one to take the air out. Otherwise you'd be breathing the same air in the tube back and forward. (try breathing directly from it ;) )

    hey Cody I love your ideas and videos and I used to work at an aquaponic nursery propagating herbs and veggies with the lights you lose alot of the usable lumans with every foot or so, so depending on the temperature of the lights try and get them as close as possible to use the light more efficiently and maybe put up some silver foil insulation or matte white plastic not gloss to reflect the light so its not absorbed by the rocks, everything helps when you are trying to imitate nature.
    oh and don't use al foil it can the crinkles can focus the light and burn little seedlings

He has a legit reason to be filming and have good audio equipment, the tension and buildup were perfect, and there wasn't a overture of horrible screechy music, and didn't just end in a jumpscare to satisfy "Every horror buildup needs a jumpscare to finish it off"

    Hey Cody, is that pipe sufficient to breathe with if there is a cave-in? I think if you have a blower on it, it would have no place to displace the gasses inside the mine to, so it would not be effective. If you try and breathe through it like a snorkel, being so long wouldn't the pipe fill up with CO2 and you would get little or no fresh oxygen? I think you need two pipes for breathing inside the mine in a cave-in.

    • @rronaldreagan
      @rronaldreagan 8 років тому +1

      you dont really understand how a snorkel works, do you? you breathe in from the mouth fresh air, you exhale from nose into the cave

    • @SpiritusL
      @SpiritusL 8 років тому +1

      +don trump What he was trying to say is that cody would need a way to get rid of the CO2 in the mine to be able to blow O2 into it. with snorkels, the CO2 always surface back to the atmosphere.

    • @rronaldreagan
      @rronaldreagan 8 років тому +3

      LuanCarvalhaes
      im not a miner, but i thought it was jjust an emergency measure... so only to be used in case the mine collapses... so in such situation you would grab the hose and put it in your mouth to inhale outside air , while exhaling through your nose in the mine
      is this not the use for said hose?

    • @Fwacer
      @Fwacer 8 років тому +2

      +don trump Yeah that would work. What the other guy was saying is if the cave collapsed midway and he was at the back, having another tube pulling out co2 and other gases out would be good

    • @michaellanham7539
      @michaellanham7539 8 років тому

      the whole point of that tube is to feed fresh air into the mine if there is a cave in.

    • @SR71xBLACKBIRDx
      @SR71xBLACKBIRDx 8 років тому +3

      +michael lanham I understand that however there is only one way for the air to feed into the mine. What if he was in the middle and it collapsed on both sides? He wouldn't have any oxygen.

    • @mikemelone7756
      @mikemelone7756 8 років тому

      Keep in mind that you would suffocate if you put your mouth to the hose and tried to use it like a snorkel. You do not have enough volume in your lungs to push the air you exhale out of the tube. You would just end up re-breathing your own exhaled breath. This is why the old diving bells had to have an air pump.

    Hey Cody, you should install the blower to that end of the pipe which is INSIDE the mine and give it a safe power connection (or store the fuel close to it)
    If you are alone out there and you forget to turn on the blower on the outside and the mine collapses, that pipe cannot help you.
    Or you could intall two blowers, one on each end and if they are run by diesel engines defenetly keep enough of that stuff in there and make sure the exit gases from the motor get processed or caught properly to not be dangerous anymore.
    And by the way, i learned way more about chemistry from your videos that I did in school. I really enjoy your content.

    You are correct. Non binary explosives such as TNT or nitro glycerin require a license, even for home use without distribution.
    All binary explosives ARE legal for home use and can be mixed on site... Just no road based transportation once mixed.
    ANFO (using diesel as fuel) is a 94:6 mix, minimum hole diameter of 1" for forced insertion (such as firm tamping), and 2-3" for poured use. It is safe to use at temperatures as low as 0*c. ANFO requires a pyrotechnic det chain to have reliable detonation in stead of deflagration. A black powder primary/ flash powder booster would give low ignition temp but high output. 5 gram is a pretty slim but often reliable charge, and would only cost about $0.15 per charge. 20-25g is self confining for this mix. 30/70 Al and KClO4, $0.035/g mixed.

      the device would not be really useful if it didn't do that and it probably has a setting to let you decide if you want to measure from the back or front of the device. at least that's how I would design the device.

    I love how you are building it from scratch and have a really nice minecraft/survival feeling. Maybe thats instinct to build a shelter and collect/use the ressources that are given to expand. You are like a pioneer building yourself a home and "unlimited" supply of ressources. I just love it and would like to spend my life this way, unfortunately there aren't many canyons here. (Maybe on Mars in the future?). Let's Play Minecraft - RL Edition! You're the super high-tech Caveman i've always wanted to be :D. Greetings from Germany/Poland!

    Hey Cody, I just wanted to tell you how much I, and I'm sure many others, appreciate your videos. I used to hate chemistry and all the mumbo jumbo about how elements react with each other and all that nonsense. I'm more of a hands-on kinda guy so listening to a 60+ year old teacher in the same boring, monotonous voice for years made me lose interest fast. But your videos made me actually interested in learning all the properties elements have, how different elements interact with each other, and how you perform reactions to isolate different elements. I mean for being so young, it's extremely impressive what you have done in the past and what you're still doing. Please, continue to upload all these fascinating videos and keep up the great work!

      +Lanr1s you had a bit of a typo there. Should NOT is what you ment I'm sure. Many have set up labs in old mines and houses thinking they were smarter than everyone who gets paid to find such places. The word for that is Hubris, and usualy is an indicator of a bad outcome. Besides, it would be hard for Cody to make these good UA-cam videos from jail.
