  • During a high school football game, Hayden took a bad hit and suffered a severe spinal cord injury. Two of his vertebrae were so damaged they were essentially flipped in place. In need of a Level 1 Trauma Center, Hayden was rushed to Loyola. He underwent an extensive procedure to alleviate the pressure on his spinal cord and correct the damage. After surgery, he was on a ventilator and had a 5% chance of making a full recovery.
Through strength, grit and determination Hayden fought his way back to his normal self. He slowly learned to breathe on his own, regained movement in his limbs and finally started to walk. Hayden is now pursuing his dream of a career in agriculture while working on his family farm: baling hay, feeding cows and driving a tractor. In the fall, Hayden will head off to college to continue his dream. Hayden is our hero. For more information, visit LoyolaMedicine5K.org.

What an amazing community to help without being asked so that the parents could just focus on their son. Blessings to all of them!

Hayden, thank you for sharing your story and giving hope to me for my younger cousin who currently is paralyzed from a spine injury. I hope (with prayer) he shares the same success story as you. God bless.

There is a big difference between spine and spinal chord. I damaged my spinal chord at C5/6 in 2011. My injury was incomplete. I got back feeling in my toes and I remember that feeling. I.also have full bladder and bowel control which is huge. But i am unable to walk and my hands were affected too which classifies me as a true quadriplegic. It depends how far up the injury is. C5/6 is quite high. If i was C4 then I'd probably be waking today. Best of luck.

I've had a spinal cord injury 20 yeara... I feel like videos like this are misleading. Implying since this guy should walk I should be able to too. And If i can't it's because i dont want it bad enough or something.

Yeah, people love latching on to these stories where people end up walking. They heap praise onto to them, and attribute them walking to hard work, and miracles. You notice that they never do videos about people like us that don't end up walking. I guess there's nothing special about us lol
That being said; I met Hayden at Shriners, and he did seem like a decent guy. I was actually underneath the walkway to the left when he was being filmed walking up the stairs. He was very lucky to have the support structure that he did, as well. Many of us don't get that lucky.
