I believe that Dan Hartman wrote this hauntingly beautiful and moving music around the same time he discovered that he had AIDS. You can feel him going through all his thoughts and emotions in this music. Sometimes, words just get in the way. I remember the 1st time I REALLY heard the tune "I can Dream About You" while walking with friends on Fort Lauderdale Beach. Dan really knew how to crate a mood with his music. No exceptions here. One other thing. As a Gay man myself, I feel a sense of bond with Dan. I know what it's like to not feel like you can always be your true authentic self. Bit whatever he felt, he spoke through his music. Travel well in the Spirit World, Maestro!❤️🌈

Wow , that was from the heart .
      Really touching .
      And so very true .
I was buying lots of music around about the time this was released .
So I had it in my collection , but never really paid too much attention to it at that time .
However having heard it again now , I can appreciate almost exactly what you've said about it .
You can almost imagine Dan at the keyboard , just letting the music flow from his fingertips .
I'm not going to make that same mistake twice .
From now on I will treasure this insight into a man's emotions .
I only wish more people will eventually find the other side to this guy's music .
It certainly deserves to be heard far more often .

@xxxxxxxx3476 I could just see him, sitting at the piano, his refuge, at his beautiful, peaceful, tranquil house in Connecticut, and composing his music. It was like...he HAD to make this. Without telling everyone who he truly was, this may be the closest thing to an autobiography of Dan Hartman that we will ever have. I know that Holly Johnson said than Dan made some "odd" comments about Spiritual Healing. This new age genre definitely falls within that. Almost like in the film "Longtime Companion" with Louise Hay.

Gifted to me by a coworker in 1992, it was the first of its kind in my ears.
30 years later it remains my most loved.

What an amazing album. Dan was an amazing talent. Miss him dearly.

Dan was a massive talent, huge premature loss to the music world. It was always wild p/funny working with him, because he could play most of the parts himself and kept a very fast pace. That said, he was always open to new ideas. It's a testament to his open approach to cut this album in such a personal style.

Thanks so much for sharing a bit of your history with him, Craig. So nice that you shared your memories of him since most folks only know about his music and not so much about the creative behind the scenes type of stuff.

He was torn between being a great producer and a star, did so well at both. Loosing Motola as mgr (he hated disco) was a big blow and moved him towards production, IMO. His James Brown impression was peeing your pants funny...when he knew he wouldn't survive he started a arts and music foundation with Charlie Midnight helping many young artists.

    • @CraigPeyton_EarthFlight

Ps, not uber clear how Steve Paul, Mottola, Jimmy Ivoine all fit in..could be off in memory. Do know both John Putnam and Ray Marchica, CPG band members went on to tour and record w him, so he must have liked what we were doing:)

Very cool. How nice to hear all this Craig. I had little idea of Hartman myself besides his 'hit' singles and support in the Winter's brothers groups. I was quite shocked to hear him do an album like this, knowing at the time that it was the same guy who did the more pop-oriented things. I figured there must be more to him than i was aware of after hearing this album. Of course there was no internet back then to gather all this background info and it was only many years later when I finally looked him up online (based on my appreciation for this album) that I discovered how many facets of the music industry he was involved in.
Now to hear things like his impression of James Brown really makes me wish I could have seen him do that myself!
Wonderful information-thanks so much again for sharing-

I've had "New Green, Clear Blue" on CD, for years.
    It's peaceful, relaxing.
It's a different side to Dan. Love this CD!
The inside liner notes were dedicated to his younger sister, Kathy.

I too bought this as a cassette so many years ago , that I had almost forgotten about it , since I no longer have a cassette machine to play it on .
And of course something like this is never found in the few music outlets that still exist .
However upon hearing it again now , after so many years , has certainly reawakened my appreciation of just how good it actually was , for both back then , and indeed the here and now .
I suppose in that respect this sort of music is always going to be timeless .
So Dan Hartman will live on , way into the future .
And isn't that the way it should be .

When ambient/new age music became popular in the 1980's a few experienced and popular keyboard players either incorporated some of it, or put out albums in the genre. Kit Watkins Thought Tones, later Gary Wright's Waiting to Catch the Light come to mind. Out of all of those, I think Dan's New Green Clear Blue is probably the best, and I think it wasn't just Dan's immense talent, but his approach. It's noted on the sleeve, and on the wiki page how Dan made a real attempt to tap into his subconscious when making this album, often isolating himself in his home studio overlooking a river in Connecticut. This kind of music takes much more mental effort, and much more time, understanding, patience, than people may realize, and I believe Dan grasped that, understood that. This has allowed the album to stand the test of time on it's own, not just an experiment into another genre, or an homage to Brian Eno and Harold Budd.

    • @cosmicpickle6562
      @cosmicpickle6562  5 років тому +1

I totally agree with all you've stated here Phil. Listening to it the first time I did note a Harold Budd influence, only to read in the liner notes shortly after that he was indeed inspired by Budd.

My wife of the time bought me this album in '90, knowing I liked this genre of music. I went looking for it on UA-cam today because the computer I have it recorded to is temporarily out of action. I did not know who Dan Hartman was, being totally disconnected from corporate teevee and Hollywood, and it saddened me to learn that he had died so young from AIDS. It really was significant because I lost one of my closest friends in '92 from the damned disease. Thanks for the upload, it means a lot. UPVOTE/SUBSCRIBE

You're welcome Alan. It seems most folks leaving comments have either heard the album or previously owned it. I only learned of Dan's passing myself much after the fact and was quite saddened by it as well. When I bought the album I did so because I knew the kind of music Private was putting out at the time and only after picking it up realized it was the same guy who had done so many pop songs, which made this album and even bigger surprise. All my best-

Sometimes a thing that has been around for a long time will just make itself apparent to you and "New Green Clear Blue" is just that for me.
I've been a fan of Dan Hartman's ever since I first heard "Instant Replay" and "Relight My Fire" in the late '70s. But this album was just recommended by the Professor of Rock on UA-cam and it is amazing.
A beautiful and atmospheric collection of songs that do exactly what Dan was said to have meant it for; To be used for reflection and bring inner peace.
Without going into how the Universe reaches out to you, I will say that, Green (breathe in) and Blue (breathe out) has been my mantra for meditation since I began and even water plays a part in the practice. This wonderful gift of music helps bring the experience to fruition and clear my mind like no other can.
    Thank you Dan,
    You journey continues.

I want to believe that Dan did not let himself die, his music conveys good sense, feelings, love, truth, I read a compilation of his interviews and I was delighted, extremely talented but above all very human, he always supported those around him. His disease caused him a brain tumor and for me that is the cause of his death and not that he did not seek treatment. His music fills me with life.

I was at a gift shop inside the mall at the south street seaport that sold glass enclosed butterflies. Before walking out I saw this cassette near the register and the sales person told me that they'd been playing it all day in the store. I bought the cassette.

The Seaport in NYC? I'd gone there in the late 80's or early 90's once with a friend and went into a shop (which had 2 floors if i'm recalling correctly) which was playing 'New Age' music and sold some of it as well, also on VHS tapes (nature things with accompanying New Age music)... I bet it was that very same shop.

I have this CD from back in late 80s early 90s. Alpha waves is my fave track. I used to could let this play for hours. Its Clear and peaceful with a low rhythm motif. I would play it low just like Dan said.

Nice. He mightv'e been going through a reflective period when he made this. It's very contemplative. Maybe pondering over his life after discovering his HIV status. I'm just speaking from experience and being a musician myself.

    • @cosmicpickle6562
      @cosmicpickle6562  6 років тому +2

Yes I came to the same conclusion myself. It seems Dan was a fan of Harold Budd (and probably other similar music) so perhaps he just decided to create something close to his own heart and not worry about the commercial aspect of it all, perhaps after confronting his mortality.

Plus it's fan base isn't exactly the same one that liked Hartman's other pop/vocal albums. Sad that it was his last, I think he really wanted to leave behind something of this which i'm sure came from the heart. Thanks for commenting!

Yes-I purchased this simply because at that time I knew Private Music wouldn't be putting out a vocal pop album. And the titles seemed to suggest that the music was fitting what I was looking for, and similar to those earlier Private Music releases. Though I thought you had this one for some reason?
Though I am surprised that there are as many used copies out there considering I don't think this sold all that much even compared to the other Private releases of the time.
But, looking in the (physical) record store at the time, I couldn't even be sure that it was the same guy who wrote those pop songs-and I just didn't want to wait to pick it up. I was hungry for new music and thought i'd take the chance since I liked all those early label releases.
