@@ch1il986 Wow, you say that so emphatically! As if you actually know the Truth! But the truth is, you don't know the Truth. And the Truth is Jesus Christ!
First of all, I have no fear of being misled because I know the Catholic Church is not misleading me in any way. Some bad Popes may have mislead some people and have been very bad examples of what it means to be Christian, but we know who the bad Popes are, which were very few; only 8 out of 266 Popes in total since Simon Peter, our first Pope.
As a Catholic, I know that Jesus is the Way, the Truth, and the Life! I also know that Jesus build His Church on Peter, the rock, and the first Bishop of Rome, also called the Pope.
Truth and wisdom have been granted to the Catholic Church who is led by the Holy Spirit. We have no man-made traditions. All the Traditions that have been passed down from the Apostles are Sacred Traditions.

Now we command you, brothers, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you keep away from any brother who is walking in idleness and not in accord with the tradition that you received from us.
      ~ 2 Thessalonians 3:6

Now I commend you because you remember me in everything and maintain the traditions even as I delivered them to you.
      ~ 1 Corinthians 11:2
      .
Preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, and exhort, with complete patience and teaching. For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions, and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander off into myths.
      ~ 2 Timothy 4:2-4
And if you want to only go by what the Bible says, you are sadly mistaken. Because Jesus Himself is the Truth. Jesus Himself is the Word. You anti-Catholics always want to call the Bible "the Word" as if Jesus can only be contained solely in the Bible. Yes the Bible is "the Word of God" but Jesus Christ is the actual WORD.

      ~ John 20:30-31
      .
Now there are also many things that Jesus did. Were every one of them to be written, I suppose that the world itself could not contain the books that would be written.

You need to understand word etymology and the meaning of words. So you have to understand the meaning of the Greek root word for Catholic. The root word for Catholic in Greek means, "on the whole."
The word denomination just means "a part of" something whole. So since the Catholic Church IS "the WHOLE," it cannot be "a part of" something else, and therefore cannot be a denomination.

Just because Christ had a Church in Rome does not make that Church a catholic church. It simply makes it Christs Church in Rome, like the one in Corinth and Laodicea etc.
There is no definitive historical proof that Peter was ever in Rome.
Jesus changed Peter's name to "rock"
Jesus did not change Jesus name to "the rock"
The Rock was and still is Jesus Christ.
The keys Jesus gave to Peter are the exact same keys Jesus gave to all of his Apostles and, in fact, to everyone in the upper chamber on the day of Pentecost.
The "keys to heaven" are the keys to an individuals salvation.

In Mt. 16:18-19, Jesus makes Peter the head of the church. He calls PETER rock, not himself. He even changes his name from Simon to Peter, which means "rock." Complete coincidence? He could have changed it to anything but he changed it to a name which means Rock. Jesus even calls Simon the Rock at other times as well like in Jn. 1:42 as did Paul. (Cephas means Rock).
Also, Jesus intentionally traveled with the apostles hundreds of miles to Cesarea Philippi to do this, where there is a huge 500 foot rock. That is the exact spot that Jesus changed Simon's name to Rock and said that you are the rock upon which I will build my church. And at this very moment he gave him the Keys of the Kingdom of Heaven giving him a primacy of authority.
Name changes are significant in Scripture. When Jesus changes his name from Simon to Peter, it symbolizes a change in status and a change in mission (like Abram to Abraham and Issac to Israel, etc). Peter was receiving a special call to be the head of the church which is why he alone singularly received the keys of the kingdom alone. The keys come from Isaiah 22 and symbolize the primacy of authority over the whole household of God.
We agree Jesus is the ultimate rock, cornerstone and foundation of the church. Some people say that Jesus is the rock so Peter cannot be. But two people can be the same thing in different ways. For example, in Ephesians 2:20, it says the apostles and the prophets are the foundation. But in the book of Revelation, it says Jesus is the foundation. It's not a contradiction, it's just different understandings. Jesus is the ultimate rock and cornerstone, but he clearly made Peter the head of the church when he gave him the keys of the Kingdom and a special authority. Thus, the Church is built on Peter as Jesus said, but he is the ultimate cornerstone.

Doubters? PETER as Shepherd and first Pope: Scriptural evidence and the structure of the primitive Church make it absolutely undeniable that Christ chose Peter and that Peter was first among the twelve. Depending on the translation, Peter is mentioned 195 times. The closest is John (the beloved disciple) at just 29 times. The rest even less. Consider:
Jesus entered Peter’s house. (Matthew 8:14)
Jesus changed Simon's name to Peter. (John 1:42)
Jesus gave Peter the keys to the gates of Heaven. (Matthew 16:19)
Jesus declared Peter to the the rock. (Matthew 16:18)
Jesus made Peter shepherd. (John 21:15-17)
Jesus told Peter to strengthen his brothers (Luke 22:32)
Jesus paid the Temple tax only for Himself and Peter. (Matthew 17:24-27)
Jesus preached from Peter's boat. (Luke 5:3)
Jesus told Peter to "Follow me" (John 21:19)
Jesus called only Peter to walk on the water. (Matthew 14:29)
    Jesus predicted Peter's three-fold denial. (Matthew 26:34)
Jesus predicted Peter's repentance and three-fold affirmation. (Luke 22:32)
Jesus prophesied only Peter's manner of death. (John 21:18-19)
Jesus taught Peter forgiveness 70 times 7 times. (Matthew 18:21-22)
Jesus spoke only to Peter at Gethsemane. (Mark 14:37)
Peter is always listed first of the Apostles. (Matthew 10:2, Luke 6:14, Acts 1:13)
Peter was first to confess Jesus as Messiah. (Matthew 16:18)
Peter alone spoke at the Transfiguration. (Matthew 17:4, Mark 9:5, Luke 9:33)
Peter pointed out the withered fig tree. (Mark 11:21)
Peter entered the tomb first - John deferring to him. (Luke 24:12, John 20:3-4))
Jesus, after resurrecting, appeared FIRST to Peter, then to the twelve. (1 Corinthians 15:5)
Peter was the only apostle to confess that he was a sinner. (Luke 5:8)
Peter decided the manner of replacing Judas. (Acts 1:15-26)
Peter spoke for the eleven at the Pentecost. (Acts 2:14-36)
Peter was released from prison by the Angel. (Acts 12:6-11)
Peter spoke for the eleven before the Council. (Acts 4:8-12)
Peter held sin bound to Ananias and Sapphira. (Acts 5:1-10)
    Peter's shadow healed. (Acts 5:15)
Peter declared the sin of Simony. (Acts 8:18-23)
Peter revealed the salvation of Gentiles to the Church at Jerusalem. (Acts 11:1-18)
The Angel told Cornelius to call for Peter. (Acts 10:3-8)
The Holy Spirit fell upon the Gentiles as Peter preached to them. (Acts 10:44-45)
At the empty tomb, the Angel said, "Go tell His disciples, and Peter." (Mark 16:7)
Mary Magdalene ran to tell Peter and the beloved disciple. (John 20:2)
The vision of all foods being clean was given only to Peter. (Acts 10:9-16)
Peter's words silence the first council in Jerusalem. (Acts 15:7-12)
Paul went to Peter to affirm that his Gospel was not in vain. (Galatians 1:18)
Peter was given the revelation of the end of the world. (2 Peter 3:10-11)
Peter taught that Paul’s words were easily twisted. (2 Peter 3:16)
Peter taught that baptism now saves you (1 Peter 3:21)
And many other references. One may deny that Peter was primary, but it takes an amazing ignorance or denial of scripture and history to do so.

The problem with this is the fact both historically and biblical, is that Peter was never in charge of the decision making process. It was decided by the ecumenical council of all the Apostles combined and in agreement together. This is evidenced by the first decision ever recorded by the church in Acts, where in fact, it was James, who presided over the meeting.
Peter was actually called out for his hypocrisy by St Paul on an occasion.

@ for the first 325 years of Christian faith there was no cannon of New Testament scripture.
So playing the ad hominem attack of being scripture illiterate is not a good argument.
Additionally trying to use one occurrence of scripture is not a sound basis for sound doctrine. For 1024 years there was no Roman Catholic Church. There was just the Church, one faith and one baptism. There was no Pope ruling them all.
In conclusion, in Acts 15, St Peter was speaking out to express his view on the opinion. He did not make the final decision. It was St James who made the decision by his decree of “ Therefore, it is my sentence that we trouble them not”.
And with that, it was they together who wrote letters to Antioch and all of the Churches for this decision to be carried out by all the Churches.
There was no Pope then, there is no Pope now.

That's also why he gave him the keys of the kingdom of heaven, giving him directly the primacy of authority over the church. I'm glad you brought up Jn 1:42 where Jesus again called Peter Cephas, which means rock. Peter is called Rock throughout the New Testament.
The Church is first and foremost built on Christ. He is the ultimate head and cornerstone. Not Peter. Yet, he made Peter the leader of the Church on earth and clearly built the Church on him and the Apostles.
Peter and the Apostles were teaching and preaching, correcting and reproving and making doctrines and ordinances before and after the Gentiles joined the Church. So, that's irrelevant.

The word "this" is near demonstrative, pointing back to what the Father revealed to Peter in Matthew 16:17. John points out some of the details of the confession, in 1 John 5:1. This did not occur in the first confession by Peter, in John 1:42. Jesus did not call Peter rock, He renamed him both times. The first one was based on flesh and blood by Andrew, and the other was based on what the Father revealed to Peter. What the Father revealed to Peter, is what overcame hades, Revelation 1:18. Flesh and blood does not overcome hades, it is Christ who overcame hades. Both times Jesus renamed Simon to Peter, because of the confession. But only once did Jesus say "upon this rock I will build My church". If you dare to compare the two passages, which I know you won't do if it does not fit your view, you will see it is based on what the Father gave to Peter, is what the church is built upon, that overcame hades. Peter never overcame hades, and the church is built on Christ's spirit, not Peter's nor the flesh and blood of Peters. Your interpretation is very shallow and only skin deep Bryan. • @danielmayer1977

The claim that Peter started the Catholic Church lacks clear biblical and historical evidence. A Christian community in Rome existed before Peter’s arrival, as shown in Paul’s letter to the Romans (Romans 1:7-15), suggesting it was founded by early Jewish-Christian converts, possibly from Pentecost (Acts 2:10). While tradition holds that Peter ministered in Rome and was martyred there, the New Testament does not describe him as the first Bishop of Rome or support the idea of a 25-year episcopacy. Early church leadership was shared among elders (presbyteroi) and overseers (episkopoi), reflecting a collaborative structure rather than centralized authority.
Jesus calling Peter the "rock" (Matthew 16:18-19) is interpreted differently. While some see Peter as the foundation, others view "rock" as his confession of faith or Christ Himself as the cornerstone (Ephesians 2:20). The New Testament emphasizes Jesus as the foundation (1 Corinthians 3:11) and portrays shared apostolic leadership. James leads the Jerusalem council (Acts 15:13-21), while Paul spearheads the mission to the Gentiles (Galatians 2:7-9). Even Peter’s "keys of the kingdom" (Matthew 16:19) do not establish exclusive authority, as similar authority is granted to all apostles in Matthew 18:18.
The roles of bishops, priests, and deacons reflect later tradition rather than rigid New Testament mandates. Scripture mentions these roles (e.g., Acts 6:1-6, Titus 1:5-7) but uses terms like "bishop" and "elder" interchangeably (Titus 1:5-7, Acts 20:28). The early church emphasized the priesthood of all believers (1 Peter 2:9), underscoring spiritual equality. A distinct hierarchy developed gradually over centuries.
Peter and Paul’s martyrdom in Rome elevated the city’s status, but its primacy arose over time due to political and historical factors, not solely their presence. Early Christianity recognized multiple centers of authority, such as Jerusalem, Antioch, and Alexandria. Rome’s prominence as a center of Christianity became fully established much later, with disputes over this authority contributing to the Great Schism of 1054.
The Catholic Church as it exists today did not emerge during Peter’s lifetime. The term "Catholic Church" first appears in Ignatius of Antioch’s writings (c. 107 AD), and its structure evolved after Constantine’s legalization of Christianity in 313 AD and the ecumenical councils. In summary, Peter was a key figure, but the idea that he founded the Catholic Church or served as its first pope is unsupported. Scripture affirms Jesus Christ as the church’s foundation (Ephesians 2:20, 1 Corinthians 3:11), with the apostles collectively spreading the gospel. The Catholic Church’s structure grew over time, shaped by tradition and historical development, not directly instituted by Peter.
In the name of Jesus Christ, I bless you all!

Daniel, your ignorance is showing precisely because you did not watch the video. You're very first sentence said that there is a lack of evidence biblically that Peter started the Catholic church when the entire video is about the fact that Peter never started the Catholic Church. Jesus did.
The Bible says the true church has Bishops, priests, and Deacon's, and also the laying on of hands to pass on Authority. If your church doesnt have those three offices, its not the Church of Jesus.
Bishops include Timothy and Titus (1 Tim. 5:19-22; 2 Tim. 4:5; Titus 1:5).
      Priests (presbyters) 1 Tim. 5:17; Jas. 5:14-15).
      Deacons: Acts 6:1-6
Priests (Greek: presbuteroi) are also known as “presbyters” or “elders.” In fact, the English term “priest” is simply a contraction of the Greek word presbuteros. They have the responsibility of teaching, governing, and providing the sacraments in a given congregation (1 Tim. 5:17; Jas. 5:14-15).
You said the way that the Catholic church is today is not the way it was in Peter's lifetime. That's like saying that the way you are right now is not the way you were when you were a baby. The logic is flawed. What tree looks like the acorn it started from? What adult looks like the baby it was? And what church looks like it was 2000 years ago with 12 men in an upper room?

      @@CatholicTruthOfficial
I agree that Peter did not start the Catholic Church, as Jesus Himself established it. My point was not that you made this claim, but that many Catholics-particularly those less familiar with Church history-do hold the simplified view that Peter "started" the Catholic Church or was essentially its founder under Christ. Such a claim, while common in lay understanding, lacks clear biblical and historical evidence.
While Jesus renamed Simon as Peter (Matthew 16:18) and gave him the "keys of the kingdom" (Matthew 16:19), interpretations of these passages differ. Some see the "rock" as Peter himself, others as his confession of faith, and others as Christ, the ultimate cornerstone (Ephesians 2:20). This diversity reflects longstanding theological debates, not ignorance.
Peter held a significant role, but early Church authority was shared. Jesus gave the power to "bind and loose" to all the apostles (Matthew 18:18). At the Jerusalem Council, James-not Peter-presided and delivered the final judgment (Acts 15:13-21). Paul also emphasized his equal authority to Peter in spreading the gospel to the Gentiles (Galatians 2:7-9). These examples suggest a collaborative leadership model rather than one centralized solely in Peter.
The New Testament mentions bishops, priests, and deacons, but these roles were not yet part of a rigid hierarchy. Terms like "bishop" (episkopos) and "elder" (presbyteros) are often used interchangeably (Titus 1:5-7, Acts 20:28). Moreover, the priesthood of all believers (1 Peter 2:9) highlights spiritual equality. The distinct hierarchy of bishops, priests, and deacons evolved gradually over centuries, shaped by tradition and historical necessity, rather than being explicitly mandated in Scripture.
While the Church’s growth can be likened to a tree growing from an acorn, much of what defines the Catholic Church today-its doctrines, papal authority, and traditions-emerged long after Peter’s time. The term "Catholic Church" first appears in Ignatius of Antioch’s writings (c. 107 AD), reflecting a developing sense of unity. The Church’s current structure, including the papacy as understood today, became more defined over centuries, particularly after Constantine legalized Christianity in 313 AD and during the ecumenical councils.
In conclusion, Peter’s role was pivotal, but the claim that he was the first pope or singular head of the Church lacks full biblical and historical support. The early Church was built collectively on the apostles, with Christ as the cornerstone (1 Corinthians 3:11). The Catholic Church as it exists today represents centuries of development, not a fully formed institution directly established by Peter.

In the Bible is also clear that Peter is the rock.
YES!! This rock. He said to Simon, "YOU are rock ans upon this (same) rock, I will build my church. There is 100% no doubt that he changed Simon's name to rock in that moment to make his point while standing in front of a 200 by 500 foot Rock.

People can brag about Churches etc. But the big question is, is Christ in your heart? Christ told the woman in John 4:21-24, that God can be worshipped in Spirit and truth anywhere! Christ also promised that after leaving the Spirit was going to take over and the rest of the disciples were to be His witnesses (Acts 1:8). It is the preaching of Christ that produces faith that leads to people converting into children of God! We like Paul must know nothing else, except Christ and Him crucified (1 Corinthians 2:1-4). Any bragging about human characters is very vain!

    • @CatholicTruthOfficial
      @CatholicTruthOfficial  2 дні тому +2

We agree it's very important for Christ to be in your heart and to have a relationship with him. However, that's not all that's needed. You also need to have the church and be in the church that he started, which is the Catholic church. Remember that scripture states Christ is the head of his body, which is the church. So you can't have the head, Jesus, without his body, the church. If you don't have the body, you don't have the head. This isn't bragging, it's just truth.

    • @mmbtalk
      @mmbtalk 2 дні тому +2

@CatholicTruthOfficial Well! That's another gospel you are defining, nowhere did the primary witnesses preach that believe in the Lord and be part of particular Church to be saved, you become part of the Church because of your being saved. If the son sets you free, you are free indeed (John 8:36), being a child of God is something Jesus does for you upon receiving Him (John 1:12). Whether we use the Bible or the writings of early Christians in the first century, no one adds the being part of some Church as a precondition for getting saved. Even Philip after leading the eunuch to conversion and baptizing him in Acts 8, he allows this person to return to Ethiopia without any emphasis on some church.
We need Church for fellowship, learning from gifted teachers so that we grow both in grace and knowledge. This is also too clear in the first four chapters of Ephesians. Unfortunately, power hungry Bishops later on held on to Ignatius writings on the Bishop's authority to impose all kinds of things around the church. They use also Paul's teaching in Ephesians 5, cunningly to suggest that since the church is the body of Christ it can invent rules which if you disagree you are cut off from Christ. These are people who use the gospel selfishly to further their own personal aims. A true servant will be like John the Baptist, " He must increase, I must decrease."(John 3:28-30). In Luke 17:10, the Lord expect us to do his work without seeking personal credit!
I agree, the Church is important but it must learn its place. All authority belongs to Christ and in His authority we all act and not seek to load it over others.

      @CatholicTruthOfficial  2 дні тому

Actually, they did. That's why we specifically said that Christ is the head and the church is the body. You can't have the head without the church. And in fact, the apostles, like Paul said that if you didn't follow all of the doctrines of the church, and you didn't listen to the teachings that they laid down, then you were excommunicated and kicked out of the church. The church is not whatever you want it to be.
We agree with you though that all authority belongs to christ, and it's Christ who gave his authority to the church and said we must listen to the church. Jesus said if you reject to the church, you reject him. Lk. 10:16, Mt. 18:15-18.
All throughout scripture, we see the church leaders teaching and preaching, correcting and reproving, and making doctrines and ordinances that the people had to follow if they wanted to be part of the church. They did this with the authority that Christ gave them.

Someone by the name of Peter could have started the Catholic church, but it wasn't the Biblical Peter the one that followed Jesus.
Jesus said to his disciple peter. "Peter you are Rock and on this Rock I will build my Church". Matt 16:18. But which church was Jesus talking about? Jesus never said it was the Catholic church, the Catholic church just inserted itself in what Jesus told Peter.
But the Bible does reveal the Church Jesus was talking about. Jesus himself is revealing to the apostle John his church, in Revelation chapter two.
The Church that Jesus founded was established in the province of Asia. Revelation 1:4...Not in Rome.
The church also have Seven names. Revelation 1:11...and the Catholic church isn't among the Seven names.
In revelation Chapter two. Jesus is judging and correcting each church one by one according to the 2000 years count down. The church Jesus founded have Seven names but it is one church.

However the Catholic Church is mentioned in 1 Timothy 4:1 " The Spirit expressly says that in later times some will depart from the faith by giving heed to deceitful spirits and doctrine of demons, through the pretensions of liars....WHO FORBID MARRIAGE and enjoin abstinence from food which God created.....".
The qualification for a Bishop is to be the HUSBAND OF ONE WIFE AND TO KEEP HIS CHILDREN SUBMISSIVE, 1 Tim 3:1-7, yet Catholic Bishops are not married/children and it use to be that on Friday you could not eat meat, don't know if that is still being taught, they change all the time, like now they bless same sex couples.....what verse is that in?

      @CatholicTruthOfficial  10 годин тому

Yes, there are many who departed from the faith like the gnostics. The gnostics forbid marriage because they thought it was evil and because they thought matter was evil. The scripture is talking about the gnostics. The Catholic Church doesn't forbid marriage from anyone. Anyone can choose to be married. If you choose to take a vow of celibacy with the priesthood, that's a choice also.
The qualification never says that you have to be married. It just says if you are married that you have to be the husband of one wife, not two or three or four. The Catholic Church follows what Jesus and Paul suggested, that those who serve the kingdom of God remain celibate. You can see that in Matthew 19 and in 1 Corinthians 7, for example. And we see this and the wisdom of this with Protestant pastors who have a 50 percent divorce rate, and 84% or more dissatisfaction rate by their wives and kids. It's really difficult to serve God full time in the kingdom and have a full-time family as well. Many Catholic priests are married, and they say how difficult it is.
The scriptures don't need to mention the Catholic Church by name since the Catholic church is the only one built on the rock of Peter and all the other Protestant religions are based on the Bible which is not only unbiblical, but there is no biblical model for it in the entire new testament. But what we do see is it teaching and preaching authoritative church, where the leaders of the church correct people, make doctrines and ordinances, and teach people what they need to know, and even excommunicate people. The Bible also talks about having bishops, priests, and deacons, and Protestants don't have these three offices meaning that they are not the true church.

Boundary? There is no boundary. Confused at what that means. The Church is Catholic and Catholic means universal. It's a universal church not just a Roman Church. The reason why Rome was seen as a preeminent in the early Church was because Peter and Paul both built up the church there, shed their blood there, and Peter was bishop there for 25 years as the leader of the Church (along with his successors).

    • @captainmarvel76927

@CatholicTruthOfficial were talking past each other. Rome is a Petrine See by default that ultimately all churches came from the direction of Peter's strategy (via the Holy Ghost) and possibly what Christ himself directed him to-do. All is well, but remember Paul wasn't commissioned for a number of years after his conversion. Technically u could even say the Church of Rome started with the first converts at Peter's sermon in Acts 2-3. Those converts would have been given instructions from Peter and the Apostles on that day with authority to carry out the ministry. Thus Peter via the Holy Ghost founded the Church at Rome and ultimately all the initial places. (Otherwise u go down the road of Eastern Orthodoxy lol.) Peace be too u and may ur daughter and family be well.

We agree that Jesus is the one unique mediator between God and man, and Catholics have taught that for 2000 years. However, that does not mean people cannot pray and intercede for us and visa versa. Don’t you ask your friends, family, and pastors to pray for you? Why? If asking Mary and the Saints to pray for us interferes with the mediation of Jesus (even though that’s not what that means), then by the same logic, we cannot ask others to pray for us and we cannot pray for them if they ask. A mediator is someone you put between you and God. So it's a false dichotomy.
The truth is that according to the Bible, 1 Tim. 2:1-4, praying for other people is a good thing that pleases God. It litterally says we can intercede on behalf of others. So, Jesus is not the only one who can intercede. We in the body of Christ are allowed to pray and intercede for each other without interfering with the mediation role of Jesus. In other words, our loved ones can pray to Jesus on our behalf and then he takes the prayers perfectly before the father. Likewise, Mary and the Saints also pray to Jesus on our behalf and he takes all of their prayers perfectly before the father. It's the same thing. If no one can pray for you without interfering with the role of Jesus, stop asking people on earth to pray for you too.

      1) Isaiah 22: Position of the "Prime Minister" who was given the "keys of the kingdom" and stood in place of the King while he was gone. Same language that Jesus says to Peter when he gives him the "keys of the kingdom".
      2) At the Last Supper, Jesus describes who is to be the leader among them as the servant leader. Jesus then turns to Peter and says that Satan has asked to sift all of you. He then tells Peter that when he comes back, he is to strengthen the others.
      3) Matthew 17 when asked about paying a specific tax. Jesus asks Peter, "From whom do kings of the earth take toll or tribute? From their sons or from others?” And when he said, “From others,” Jesus said to him, “Then the sons are free. However, not to give offense to them, go to the sea and cast a hook, and take the first fish that comes up, and when you open its mouth you will find a shekel; take that and give it to them for me and for yourself"
      4) Jesus asks Peter to feed his lambs, tend his sheep and to feed his sheep. Three different things for Jesus' flock. Again, calling him to lead them as a shepherd.
The idea isn't just based on the one passage in Matthew's gospel, but comes from a variety of places.

There is no clear biblical evidence that Peter was ever in Rome, but Christian tradition suggests that he was:
    Biblical evidence
The Bible does not mention Peter's trip to Rome in the book of Acts or the Epistles. Paul's Epistle to the Romans, written around AD 57, does not mention Peter, even though Paul knew him.
    Christian tradition
Early church fathers, such as Irenaeus of Lyons and Ignatius of Antioch, wrote that Peter was in Rome. Church tradition also holds that Peter was martyred in Rome under the rule of Emperor Nero.
    Other evidence
Some ancient sources, such as the Ecclesiastical History of Eusebius of Caesarea, suggest that Peter arrived in Rome in 42 and lived there for 25 years. Some scholars also believe that the Letter to the Corinthians provides strong evidence that Peter was martyred in Rome.
    Excavations
In the 1950s, archaeologists excavated a tropaion, which was originally located in the middle of an ancient cemetery. Although no grave or bones were found, some believe that Peter was buried there.
However, some scholars have problems with the traditional account:
The flow of the story suggests that Barnabas and Saul were in Jerusalem when Peter was set free from prison.
Acts 12:17 could not possibly refer to Peter going to Rome in AD 42.

It's ok, there is plenty historical evidence that Peter was in Rome. And even if there wasn't, there is no requirement for the founder of the Catholic Church to reside in Rome.
